So this is my Nintendo XP. Looking for thoughts, suggestions, feedback in general. First pic is the front with the lid up... notice the slim, slot DVD burner! That's also a 1GB stick of corsair visible inside the case, below the dvd..
Next pic is the back... the other similar projects I've seen all use the "hack it to bits" technique of i/o panel installation (i.e. cut out the specific holes you need instead of installing an actual plate.) Personally, I think using the plate gives it a much cleaner look. Too bad the plate was just a little too big (bottom left side). Hardly noticable upon first glance, though...
Finally... this is the 'i can hack the psu if i wanna' pic. using a sata power adapter took too much case room, so i removed a 4-pin and soldered in the sata power.
So that's all the pics for now, but the system goes like this:
VIA EPIA SP-13000 mainboard
1GB corsair ram
80 GB fujitsu 2.5" sata hdd
slim, slot dvd burner by pioneer
200w power supply via audioforge.com
XP MCE 05
still in progress... currently am waiting for usb port parts. part of the fun will be modding the original controller port from the INSIDE of the case to act as a usb port (already have this part, just waiting on cables - retrousb.com) + a joystick to mouse emulator... so I'll have an original, unmodded NES controller that I can use as the mouse! also, usb stuffs will include internal 802.11g and bluetooth.
thanks for your comments! more pics to come as more work gets done!
more pictures!
this is the inside view from above...
the wiring is obviously not final yet... mostly just trying to prove to myself what I can and can't do...
here's the top half of the case with the dvd and hdd...
the wiring job for interior usb ports and from the nes controller port to the usb header (not entirely pictured)
here's the little piece that converts the nes port to a usb port... no drivers needed, just plug in the controller and xp sees a usb gamepad! (sorry this one's a little blurry)
and finally, a quickie of the power supply...
in many of these pics, you can see the other components, too... i.e. the g adapter... i'm still deciding if this is going to be for home or vehicle use... if it stays at home, the second inside usb will have a micro receiver for a gyration keyboard/mouse, if it goes to the truck, it will be a bluetooth receiver for phone/keyboard/mouse connections...
to save you the time of scrolling through for my random updates: yes the controller port works... the nes controller also functions as a mouse via Joy2Key software emulation. a little strange, but fun nonetheless. hope you enjoyed it. screen shots pending...
