I'm thinking of getting one of those shuttle like boxes to build the wife a new desktop computer. But gotta be honest with you, for firewalls...such as Untangle, I much prefer a 1U or at least something I can stick in a rack. And I like my ports facing foward...makes more sense in a rack.
 
It looks too cute to be a firewall. I, also, would prefer a rackmount case. What kind of warranty do they put on that thing?
 
1U rack units just look so much more sexier.

Maybe I'm a nerd, but really. Nothing wrong with a SFF, but for a firewall? 1U please.

I get what the customer wants, If it really was up 2 me, it would have been a rack unit, rack mounted switch & rack mounted other goodies, instead he wanted the pretty green monster :)
 
As much as a 1U saves headaches, I have had clients not want racks because they think they're ugly, and would much rather have one of those huge, gaudy green beasts, so I can relate. Apparently neat cable management is not as beautiful to them as it is to me.

That NG25 is sexy.

Looks like the same flimsey box that my last company used to sell their firewall distribution on, I would much rather have a terminal size box or a rack mountable, personally.

You missed most of the site than....go look again, the higher up units are simply impressive, and with incredible failover technology...including the drives. The NG25 is simply his budget entry level model for tiny branch offices, and will mostly be for his "Green" product (similar to Astaro Red). Look at the rest of the NG products in the higher numbers...you won't be calling them "flimsy". ;)

I'm still thinking about getting a unit from Jim, not to sure yet. He's a busy guy for sure.

The box i got lastnight from linux appliance, is pretty decent, its for a home customer, so it's perfect.

I WISH i could have gone rack but well, customer didn't want to buy a rack and other things to support it.

Now to get my astaro 220 unit working :( BAH!
 
Never sae that ng25 jim didn't mention that one. Only issue I see is the price and the gap between the next model. Ng100 is a little expensive for my clients.

What are we thinking price will be for the 25? How bout heat? What is it rated for as far as nodes?

He outsources them, you'll find the cases used in other whitebox and ODM units, a while ago on Untangles forums someone cornered him on that subject. He does the testing and configuration of the internal components especially for Untangle, which makes them unique for him, but the "chassis" and other things are still technically "made" by another source.
 
i've read about untangle on this forum several times, but i've never actually known what the hell it is. It looks pretty cool. So, basically the free version of untangle is free right? You can "download" it or whatever and run it on a p4 box in your home if you wanted to right? This website just has it installed on a neat little shuttle pc, or on a rack mountable box as well? Is that the jist of it? Untangle runs on it's own right? It's not a program that runs on windows or on linux?

yep.... it's an OS in itself, just a few companies sell very compatible boxes that run them is all...

i've custom built a LOT of untangle boxes, the majority of which are in cheap norco 2u cases (i like those particular ones because they take a full size psu)
but more recently i've built a few in antec's miniitx case

to stonecat's point, i've thought about modding keystones into the front 5.25" bay, but that might be slightly ghetto...

As long as you make sure the parts are compatible you can run pretty much anything.

On another note...

Short list of benefits of going with Jim @ Untangle Appliances

Why people corner people who work hard providing a REAL service trying to make a living is beyond me. I call ignorance...

yeah, i read about it. It looks awesome. It runs on bare metal in some sort of linux.We are already talking about buying the NG-25 for the sites we support, which is about 10, and then getting the NG-100 for the headquarters.

Anybody know when this shit is ready to ship? I read somewhere that said October 2010?

Pretty much. It runs on Debian, so Untangle isn't really an OS itself...it's an open sourced UTM firewall, highly customized, a bunch of "virtual machines"...that run on top of Debian, with a lot of other custom apps and special tweaks. You don't have to install Debian or Ubuntu first...it's all configured in the ISO that you download, just boot from the CD and follow the easy peasy hand holding installation wizard. The end result is a layer 7 firewall that can take the place of your regular old hardware router that runs NAT. It can also be run in single NIC mode as a transparent "bridge" behind your current router, but the preferred approach is to make it your edge device with 2x NICs.

It can be installed and run on most x86 and even x64 hardware, people generally have better success running it on solid business grade Intel based hardware with good quality network cards like Intels or 3COMs..most Broadcoms are OK, you want to stay away from cheapo "win-NICs" like realtecs and home grade stuff.

It's best to run it bare metal, although it will run fine in a well built vmware environment...however, performance can suffer, being layer 7 it's very sensitive to sharing the CPU and having virtual NICs, so you best have a honking hypervisor box.

The NG 100 - 2000+ are ready to ship now. The NG 25 and 50 are coming in next week for bios beta testing. I think we will be ready to ship by the end of October, but I may have a handful of units to ship within the next week or two, but no real quantities (or promises).

Well, I came back to this thread to update some of the guys. On your website it says "Shipping - Mid November 2010", but it looks like you beat me to the punch. Welcome to the forum, and i've heard a lot of good things in other threads on hardfroum about Untangle and also good things about the boxes that you sell. Keep up the good work. My company is planning on buying some things from you in the coming months.
 
We will. The best is yet to come. We have some more projects setup for next year. Smaller devices, new features, and some new services.
 
Sexy little devices there. I've been running Untangle on an RSA SecurID 1U that i picked up. It's been excellent so far. Going on about 3 weeks or funtime so far i think. Only downed it once recently to toss some spare ram in there.
