Nice! Untangle Unit!

Trying to convince my boss to get a NG-100 in to play with. We have a couple clients that would largely benefit from an Untangle appliance being added but I wanted to wait until I had a chance to play with these. :)

try installing it on a home computer that is spare with some good intel nic's ? Thats what i did, and fell in love with the software!

I did initial testing on a Dell Optiplex thing. Then moved on to a 1U Gigabyte Dual Core Opteron server (4 servers 4 locations). Finally I ended up with four pretty beefy Dell servers. I'm about three years in now, unfortunately I met Jim at UA a smidge too late.

We could not live without it. I also pieced together a 1U supermicro box for a two user remote worker office, just to get them online on the Open Source bundle. They are all ROCK SOLID and do their job! Untangle is a great platform to work with, especially the current version. We had a few issues back when we started on it. But we're good, for what we pay for it; it's great.

Yes i love the untangle stuff, i did buy a astaro 220 unit, witch is working great but i might try to sell it and buy a ug-100 from Jim, only if i can sell the astaro unit tho.

I like both pieces of software, however untangle only supports one type of vpn, using open vpn :(

Oh, I run Untangle on a spare computer for my home network. I even have a few appliances we built out in the field. I just like the idea of having the prebuilt appliances around. Way less work on our part. :D (Although in reality, once we throw an Untangle box somewhere there's not a whole lot we have to do with it maintenance-wise.)

On a related note, we had yet another Astaro box need to be RMA'd yesterday and had a pretty nasty virus get past the 220 we have running our office and branch office, so maybe I can convert my boss yet ;)

However, if i was to replace it, i would just build a untangle unit, the UG-100 is nice, but for home use a unit at that price with all those ports is wasted, so is what i have, but i got mine 1/3 the price.

The ug-25 is sleek and nice too, but its got a steep price tag, and for home use its way out of range.

As far as the price of the NG 25 is concerned, we are not after a home market. These are business driven. Home users do not pay, and we cannot afford to spend much time catering to that market. If the home users are looking for a sub $400 offering, check out our ONE and A series appliances. Any of the NG's are going to be out of their price range.

I wish i had the money to buy the ut-100 for home :( but still out of my price range.

the network cards in a 220 are all intel, 4 gbit and 4 10/100.

I am mainly focused on Home users, but i do focus on business users. One of the teams i work with swear by Sonic wall.
 
I know, we just cant get something manufactured for less than $400. Netgear, sonicwall, and the like can because they are using ARM and Cadvium processors, we must use x86, which is inherently more expensive.
 
Great pictures Jim, How loud is the unit tho ? those 1.5" fans sure make tons of noise ?

They aren't too loud. I haven't DB metered them, but they operate off "thermal cruise mode" so the fans adjust to cpu temps. I believe I have them set to 45C but you can safely set it to 50-55C. The noise ranges from silent to kinda loud, lol.
 
Sweet hows the stock? On the site I thought I saw the ng25 having 2gb that true or what
 
Price bit higher than I wanted, I thought you wanted it to be $599 no? Dunno if ill be able to get that into the one client I wanted.
 
They are custom made. All the network interfaces are intel pro 1000 pt based but they are all built on board. No PCI or PCI-e slots. Memory is crucial, disk is Seagate, CF restore card is RiData (not too well known but their quality and speed are great).

The retail price is $699 but there are special prices for partners.

The price isn't great, but it is what it is. I can't get these built for any cheaper. If people want an actual appliance instead of a white box then that's the price to be paid. If you take a look at what your getting, the price does make sense especially when you compare it to Astaro and the like.

I know Astaro sells entry level appliances for slightly cheaper, but a major difference is that the entry level astaro appliances are ARM and Cadvium based processors, which are very cheap. Untangle cannot run off of anything but x86, which is inherently more expensive.

My 1U Supermicro Celeron UT box was about $500 when I built it.

That being said, I'll take the multi-port, low power, single point of warranty, branded, guaranteed to work with Untangle, real Intel NIC, custom CF restore, guaranteed and tested quality unit before I'd build another one from scratch. Especially when time is important. Spend 1-2 hours building a unit, or just buy one that works. You still need to wait for it to get to you. Now if I paid $599-$699 and it shows up non-functional then I'd be disappointed.

I doubt it would show up non-functional, HOWEVER in the event it did, i'm sure Jim would cure that asap.

If i'm not correct last time Jim and i talked, he mentioned that they pre-test them before he ships them.

The only reason i posted the 500$ build your own comment, is for the person who doesn't have the $$ to buy a unit from Jim, or some one at home.

My unit was a Norco case 60$ Free core2duo 2.6 free asrock board 3 gigs ddr2 ram 80gig hard drive, but i did buy 2 pci low profile pro 1000 g-bit NIC's.

I so want a Ng-100 for that pretty looking machine PLUS lcd functions :)

Jim want to post some pictures of the unit running and the lcd functioning ?

I already did post some pics earlier in the thread. It shows the LCD litup and displaying some memory information. I would have to take a short movie for you to see the lcd functions.

I'm uploading a youtube video but the quality sucks. My camera couldnt focus properly on the lcd because of the back light.

At least we know where your money goes. Obviously does not get spent on camera's or camera school, but R&D on Untangle stuff where it belongs! :D
 
Yeah, I'm not good with that stuff. I got a Kodak MD1063 10.3MP camera, nothing spectacular. I'd rather spend money developing new Untangle stuff than taking pretty pictures ;)
