Nexus 6 speculation

The leaked manual actually lists the screen as UHD, not QHD. I'm curious if that is a mistake in the manual.

Page 1 of the leaked manual: "Experience crisp, clear photos, movies, and videos, on your 5.2" ultra high-definition display."

Page 2: "Your new DROID Turbo by Motorola has it all--a big, bright, ultra high-definition display, blazing speed and performance, and a high-capacity long lasting battery."

I would hope not, good lord 4K

I could see it going 4K. It is suppose to be a developer tool and like it or not, that is where things are headed. I personally think it is overkill and a waste of battery, but apparently I am in the minority.

Specs sounds intriguing. Here is to hoping it has a good camera with that battery.

I actually prefer the on screen buttons. I think it leads to a smaller footprint and can allow for contextual actions. Burn in would be bad though, but after 2 years with my N4, I dont see any image retention.

Its a developer tool based on stock software that receives updates quickly and incorporates the high end hardware at that time. That normally doesn't include the display though, android scales well

Droid phones (and Moto) have locked bootloaders and there hasn't been an exploit yet. But since they run a near stock skin it doesn't matter that much.

They once again screwed up the design with that ugly chin and capacitive buttons. The same phone size could've had a 5.5" screen with onscreen buttons.

I actually think I prefer capacitive buttons in some cases. Soft buttons aren't perfect. My Galaxy Nexus shows some pretty bad discoloration / image persistence from the soft buttons after 3 years.

with the new 64bit emulator google just released, it makes me wonder if even the Qualcomm S805 rumors are true. Unless google only cares about 64bit for tablets for next Spring. I would find it weird that there is not a 64bit Nexus phone before the other OEM's do it. Unless we're not getting 64bit next spring anyway... Boo.

Google is really at the mercy of Qualcomm. They aren't going to be putting the Tegra K1 into a phone, and if the 810 isn't ready then they are pretty much SOL in terms of a 64-bit phone. Really 64-bit in a phone is a novelty if you don't have 4gigs of RAM. The benefits of 64-bit aside from more RAM just aren't fitting for a phones workload.

Thanks to Chinese middle man and leaked databases, everyone who wanted their 2013 moto phone unlocked got it unlocked for the price of $40.

Alternatively, you could have just purchased the Dev editions of the droid maxx or moto x (what I did)

Not 4k, 2k also known as QHD. 4k is not coming to phones any time soon.

Google had never really cared about battery life for the Nexus. So a Tegra K1 with a lesser battery life isn't it out of the possibilities. Even Apple doesn't have integrated radios. It may be down to how Project Volta works out. Well, we are still waiting, Google...

The reason we were discussing 4k is because the leaked manual refers to the "ultra high-definition display."

My guess, though, since it is a lower case "u" instead of an upper case "U", is that it is just marketing language meant to invoke thoughts of Ultra HD TVs and confuse consumers.

Project Volta isn't anything special - its codename for battery savings due to ART, new API's for developers to use, battery historian, and power saving mode (which has been in every oem Android phone for years). Its not going to make much difference until devs use the new tools and optimize their apps, and the results aren't certain.

preliminary findings look pretty hawt. Ars found some incredible gains, though even if the final result is 1/3 of what they found that's still a 10% increase in life just by software. No special power saving mode was used.

Judgement should always be reserved for the final released version, but I'm not sure why you're so dismissive?

Ars also found there weren't such gains on the Nexus 7 which actually lost battery life. I'm not dismissive, from what I've read I didn't see a lot of underlying tech, the way there is say for ART or Material Design which are complete overhauls.

Battery life on a phone can be improved by doing a lot of stuff, e.g. choice of kernel/governor, making sure they work with the OS, thread optimization, core parking, adaptive usage.

I see none of this mentioned in Volta. Trust me, we are going to see this kind of stuff in future releases, from what I've seen Google's focus this time was visual design and updating the audio/video subsystems which have been terrible in Android.

That's an issue with the Galaxy Nexus' old AMOLED screen, not so much with soft buttons. I bet you have navigation bar image persistence too. I prefer soft buttons because they can change based on app context. They're also consistent - you also don't have to worry about manufacturers picking which capacitive buttons they think are most useful and what order to put them in.

Actually, it was my miss. I was reading up on all the displays/pros and cons of all the resolutions and for some reason 4K got stuck in my head. 2k, is still silly. Agreed on it being marketing carefully crafted to confuse people. Clearly they have succeed.

Google’s Nexus 6 release time frame has been confirmed
http://bgr.com/2014/10/10/nexus-6-release-date-and-price/

Google will unveil a Nexus smartphone this month, The Wall Street Journal has learned from three people familiar with the matter, although actual launch details have not been revealed. While it didn’t say the handset will be sold as the Nexus 6, the publication confirmed its internal code name, “Shamu” after a killer whale, adding that the handset will have a 5.9-inch high-resolution display and will be sold under the Nexus brand.

Don't know about the 5.9" display - new CPU-Z marks for the shamu is showing a DPI indicative of a smaller display - 5-5.3"

Reports are coming in that Google will get a first strike in against Apple on October 15th with the reveal of the HTC manufactured Nexus 9. It’s sure to draw comparisons to the expected iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display expected to be announced by Tim Cook the day after.

I’d also expect Android L to be declared as ‘ready’ if there is an event on the 15th. Plans could still change at this late stage, but new Nexus hardware and Android builds in the next week seems likely.

No mention of the Nexus 6, but 2/3 isn't bad.

All the Nexus 6 rumors seemed to have dried up recently

Couple weeks ago rumors were flying in left and right, and now that we are even closer to an announcement, no news. Hmm...

gahhh, I am taking an android training course this week (dont really need it but the company is paying me for it and I get to work from home).

The course instructor keeps referring to Nexus as the standard Android OS. Then he went on to say, "The Samsung Galaxy S5 is an example of Nexus". Also said that all phones these days have at least 16GB of RAM.

I hate people who dont understand proper terminology, but I couldn't bring myself to correct the instructor on the first day of class lol.

The instructor calls Touchwiz an example of Nexus :p

16GB RAM  which nexus phone has that ? Sh!t, most PC's don't even have that much memory. LOL

Where are the leaks ???!!!!

Am I supposed to believe in 2 days the phone will just show up on the Play store with no announcement or info? Or that there's a Google event on 15/16 announcing the Nexus 9?

That appears highly unlikely.

I think the HTC Nexus 9 is most surely going to be announced this week, and on sale Nov. 3rd per rumors. But I don't think there will be a Nexus 6 phone reveal this week, that might be just another one of those, one day shows up on the Google Play Store thing, and they have done that on Halloween the 31st before.

Or maybe secret back room hands on with the Nexus 6 this week, but not official yet

Google has done this for 2 years in a row - no Press Conference - just post the phone up on the store.

Leak or hoax?

^ Maybe it could be this week, never cared so much about a phone release before. Using a HTC Sensation XE in 2014 is painful (would be OK if it had more than 768mb of ram)!

You can clearly tell it is an iPhone 6 and not a 6 Plus by how straight the phone is... :p
I laughed.. Many wouldn't :p

Love the new Android slogan, and will Google finally advertise Android ?!!

I really hope this is revealed on the 15th !!

"All kinds of phones for all kinds of people"

Well guess what google, some people don't want a tablet for a phone, so how about showing us some love and Nexusifying the Droid Turbo pretty please!
