My Nvidia cards and Intel CPUs aren't included.
Once I saw Steam had my copy of Vista listed as "Installed 1969", I didn't summit. :p

Dosn't alter the statistical significance one bit...

Nope it wouldn't. Eight Nvidia GPUs all on Vista. Two Quads and three Dual Cores. :D

P.S. Intel CPUs...

Kinda surprised at the ATI vs NV numbers, I must admit I've never paid much attention to Steam's numbers... Have they been skewed in favor of NV that much for very long? The % of people on Vista/7 isn't as surprising, wonder how quickly that # will rise after Win7 is released (to far better PR than Vista was).

I'm happily in the latter group. These percentages might seem surprising, but aren't at all to me.

4 cores: 14.75%
That's actually pretty impressive given the relatively short period of time quad cores have been available. I guess we have the venerable Q6600 to thank for such a high percentage :)

I wonder why i fit in, have XP Pro SP3 32 bit, Vista Ultimate x64 and Windows 7 RC1 x64 installed, all with steam...i guess that is 2 votes for DX10 OS an 1 for DX9 OS.

I think you are right about that, that chip really was a marvel by Intel.

My Q6600 is on my keychain. drilled a hole in it after I built my new system.

That would be ironic considering that when HL2 came out, the game was geared towards the ATi range, so much so that nVidia bitched at how bad the ATi's were beating them on the frame rates and additional graphical features.

I think ATi are catching up after the speed bump they hit after the 2900 range was released, I think it was an even smaller margin back then.

i saw the gtx280 as 0.6% gtx260 as 1.05% and gtx295 as 0.19% compared to 4%ish for the 4800 series, pretty impressive gains.

You forget about the 4830...it's competitor is the 9800 series, so your math is flawed.

I think you are missing the point. While it's true that nVidia holds the largest chunk of the user base, their 'current gen' parts (the gtx ### series) almost aren't even in the top 10. That's bad, when ATI's current-gen part is the #3 card of all Steam users. Indeed, the two nVidia cards that place ahead of that ATI group are both 2-generations old.

A good indication that ATI has made rather tremendous progress in the current generation. (Also amusing - there really is a rather HUGE amount of old and crappy hardware in use out there. 1.41% still using the GeForce FX 5200, fer cryin' out loud! And only last month did the GeForce 6600 drop out of nVidia's top 10 cards! Heck, even 1.25% still using Intel integrated graphics - and remember, these aren't "business workstations", here. We are talking systems that people have Steam installed on to play games with, today!)

its not his math.. hes just basing it off of the information given.. sure he forgot to mention the 9800 series.. still doesnt matter.. the 4800 series is still doing pretty good with all of them combined..

Due to ATI including everything in the 4800 series group...the 9800 series still sells, and the price/performance competitor for the 9800 series is the 4830, so it's still off.

i agree to a certain extent.. but from ATI doing as well as it has done.. after everyone was willing to write it off and claim nvidia has the only graphics card company left.. to now actually being a competitor against nvidia.. its still pretty damn good..

but then again since you say ATI uses everything under one name like the 4800 series.. what about the 9800GT 9800GTX and 9800GTX+ all being used under the 9800 series label? see.. not so skewed after all is it.. since the 9800GT is in no way a competitor to the 4830.. no matter how you want to put it..

I guess you could call 1/3 of the market damn good...then what do you call 2/3 of the market?

I place the order like this 9800GT < 4830 < 9800GTX, so I don't know what your point is?

Fact is that the 4800 series is competing against both the 2x0 series and the 9800 series and if your math dosn't include that, it's flawed.

There is no 2x0 series card that competes with the 4830, NVIDIA uses it's old tweaked 8800 (aka 9800) series for that, and as we know high-end is selling less numbers than mid-range, so unless you can tell me the numbers of eg. 4890 compared to the 4830, you can make no such conclusion as you try and make.

GTX 285 made some serious gains.

Is the HD 48xx series adoption speeding up or slowing down? I remember Nv cards outsold ATIs in Q4 2008, but looking at this chart seems like 48xx share increase is starting to speed up per month. Must be all those price cuts on hd 4850/4870s in the last few months. I wonder if Nvidia is going to be able to mach HD 4850s another price drop to $100 with their GTS 250s.

You're forgetting that CS 1.6 is still one of the most played games on Steam, and that will run fine on even the oldest Intel integrated graphics. Even CS:S will run great on what you'd probably consider ancient hardware.

I'm sure some people install Steam to play some even-less-demanding games than CS as well, there's a a lot of different stuff selling on Steam.

ATI Radeon HD 4670

0.54%
+0.54%
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285

0.52%
+0.52%

Wow really? These two are practically equal share.
I thought budget video cards sold way more than the high-end niche stuff hmm?

ATI has several different budget cards though, many of which probably sell better (4830, 4850, 4770, etc.) than that one... Gamers on a budget are still looking for decent performance, otherwise they'd stick with integrated graphics or whatever they currently own.

About what I expected..
Hopefully AMD gains some ground in the coming months.

I say, good sir, that reminds me of the lawn ornament I made out of my Ferrari after I got a Lotus. One moment, I need to go throw a few more 50s on the fire. It's starting to feel a little chilly in here.

Nvidia has owned the hardware survey since they released the 8 series. ATI had no answer, so people bought Nvidia. When they finally released the the 2900 XT, they blew all remaining mind share, and have had to claw their way back ever since.

Given the above failure, I'm impressed the 4800 series has such a high percentage.

Bah, plebian... everyone knows 100's burn better, longer, for these chilly periods.
