I am running an E6300 with 667 patriot ram. i hit 3.15ghz [load 51c] with it and am very happy.

but.

if i went up to the E6600 i should be able to hit 4ghz, which would be amazing since this is the first time i've overclocked before.

1. will i actually be able to hit 4ghz or will the higher multiplier make me drop the mhz down?

2. should i get 800 RAM and try to push my e6300?

3. should i get 800 RAM in order to put less stress on my RAM and have a more stable overclock (for the E6600)?


I'm leaning towards getting the E66 and keeping my RAM but im not very experinced in this area.
 
so wait that means you are running your ddr2-666 @ 900 mhz speed? (fsb450 x 7 = 3150mhz)

not all e6600s can even reach 4ghz, stable or not. It seems like your ram would be able to do 444x9 = 4ghz seeing as you already having it running at an amazing 450fsb, but if you guy a new processor there's no guarantee it would run that fast and be stable.
 
You will need more than 800mhz ram to push an E6300.

Just go for an E6600. (don't hold your breath for 4GHz either... you would need an amazing chip to do that)
 
I would wait until July 22 when they drop the prices to their lineup including the Quad 6600
 
I was in your same scenario, My E6300 was GREAT. It would post and dual SuperPi 32M at 3.5GHz but I didn't have the cooling to get it orthos stable.

I then bought an E6600 thinking that with my 500+ FSB I could do over 4Ghz and maybe 4.5GHz if I were lucky.

Turns out I was lucky enough to get 3.6GHz at 1.55V (Should be in the database pretty soon) and I'm having trouble getting any past that.

The end of the story is that I tuned down my overclock and am running 3.2GHz at 1.325V with load temps of 53.

My suggestion is save your money as your performance increase is going to be minimal by switching to an E6600.

Sorry for the length but my final suggestion if you still want to switch processors is the E6420. The average overclocks are GREAT!

Ram, see my sig. and agree with above you can OC that 6300 to run as well as any other duel core out there so a new dual core cpu makes little sense. But an E6300 can top out even PC6400 (800MHz) ram. Also I think ram prices have hit bottom (I have no fact to base that on).

Frankly I would sit on the money (well I would get a 4 month CD from the bank) for a new video card or the X38 board, you have to be getting decent performance now. One big question is where will ram be in 1 year, i.e. will the X38 boards (the next big thing from Intel, have any DDR2 versions, if not you are locking yourself in. If there was some game you wanted to play and couldnt etc. I could see spending the money, the waiting game can be hard, but right now is a good time to wait a bit if you machine is doing what you need.
 
RAM prices have definitely hit bottom for DDR2 imo... All it's gonna take is one or two major OEMs to move to DDR3 and production will shift towards that, DDR2 prices won't ever drop again after that and might even go up.
 
They will most definately go up. Just look at ddr1 prices over the past year. Friggin ridiculous. Get only as much ddr2 ram as you think you'll need for your current box. Ddr3 is the new thing and it won't be long before it's mainstream.
 
so should i stick [RAM pun] with patriot and get the 800 patriot or is there better 800 RAM for around 100 bucks.

I think that my RAM is whats holding me back because i hit 51c under load but i cant push it past 3.15 .
 
I was looking at that RAM after searching [H] but i really like the 1066 patriot. since i could hit 3.7ghz without even pushing the memory. and the memory is only 20 bucks more from newegg.

I love the Patriot memory that i have
and its almost the 4th of july, i should buy Patriot
 
There is/was a kit of Corsair 800 stuff on Newegg the other day that came out to like $91 after a $40 rebate, idk if that's still going on. There was a deal on Crucial Ballistix 800 for like $110 at Mwave too... Lifetime warranties are nice. :D
 
no one can tell you that if you buy a E6600 that you will hit 4ghz.
alot of the newer batches barely hit 3.5 without giving it high Vcore.

So its all luck of the draw / batch

If you wanta good overclocker wait for price cuts and get E6850. they have been hitting 4 ghz on air. and Yes. ram is a factor as well as a good stable motherboard.
 
so far, what is holding me back is my soundcard. not heat, not ram , not cpu. the friggin sound card. i get really muffled audio when i hit 3.15ghz. i haven't tried to push it further but would better ram eliminate this problem?
 
Uhh... I really doubt it. To be honest it sounds like the PCI lock is failing at a certain FSB speed, otherwise the sound card shouldn't be mis-behaving at all due to an OC. You sure you set it correctly?
 
it worked fine at 3.1ghz, then i pushed it 3.15 and it was really fuzzy. took it back to 3.1 and it sounds perfect.:confused:
 
Um...as for the soundcard....i have to say i have the same issue...but with a 2.8 P4. I can get it to 3.04 stable...but i get NO sound....i install the sound drivers again since they get deactivated somehow:confused: and all i get is BSOD...cant even get into windows....but with no sound it works great. Im confuesed also:confused: :confused:
 
It's just not worth it to go for E6600 now. Wait for Q6600 come this July and it will be similar price as E6600.
 
ymm lets see..for nearly the same price. you get 4mb more cache the the E6600.

I mean Ide choose the E6850 over the E6600 If you want to stick it in that scenario.

E6850's have been hitting 4ghz on AIR.. while when your bustying 1.5 Vcore into an E6600 to hit 3.6 ghz.. I mean..

The answer is under your nose :)

After reading everyone's very helpful comments i think i should get the 1066 Patriots and then get the E6850 when they come out.

does that sound like a good plan or should i...
 
But then you'll need a new mobo as well, unless we get some bios updates to officially support the 1333 fsb
 
true. i have a new issue though. i'll run stress tests and my computer will be fine at 3.2ghz, but when i play a game it crashes at random times (usually when there is a lot of stuff going on). it seems like a RAM issue but i used orthos to stress my RAM and i never had an issue.

would the 1066s help this issue?
 
depends though, we dont' know if that's a problem with the RAM being pushed too high or what.
