Just upgraded my mobo. No new components, but new chipset, etc. Old board listed below. New board is Asus A8N32 - SLI Deluxe. I have been trying to do a clean XP install, but get BSOD about 80% of the way through formatting prior to install.

I have a feeling I need to update to new bios prior to install (haven't done that yet). Just wondering how I can update the bios without an OS installed. I don't have the utility disks that normally come with the mobo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

You have no floppy drive ?

Check the manual, most if not all will update the bios with no OS installed with a floppy boot disk, the files are on the manuf web site and many new ones can do it from a USB memory stick that can (some cant) be configured as a floppy.
 
Never mind. Drives are toast....apparently damaged when my mobo melted down.

Going to buy a nice big Caviar, or something along those lines. I don't know that I have much interest in running Raid anymore for what I'm doing. One question though: Can someone make a drive recommendation...something I can drop in and get up and running quickly? Frustration level is pretty high at this point.

BTW, going to a single drive, no RAID, I'm assuming the first step before fresh install is bios--> Enable SATA1--->disable RAID and SATA 2, 3, 4? And hopefully no special drivers needed prior to install since no RAID configuration?

Hi McGahey are you sure that it's not an overclock that's causing this? I've had this problem alot when I had a 939 on the same board you're talking about and my hard drives were fine although the board made it look like it was indeed the drives. Try downclocking your memory if it's overclocks and go back to stock clocks.. Sometimes that helps. I had my issue with 4x1 though.
 
I never disable the ports like that. I just make sure that the bios says the SATA ports are in IDE mode and then you can install like normal. Also check the SATA2 drives for a jumper and put it in SATA1 mode.

I usually go with the Seagate 7200.10's (haven't tried the .11's yet). But pretty much any HDD with 16mb cache or better is fine for an OS. I've used WD, Seagate, Maxtor (both before and after Seagate bought them out), Hitachi, and Samsung. The only drives to ever fail on me were 1 WD drive which they RMA'd with no problems and 1 old Maxtor which died after 1 year and had no warranty on it after 1 year :(.
