HKEPC is saying that new Core-based Pentium and Celeron 400 processors will hit the market on June 3rd. Here is a bit on processor models and pricing:

Pentium E2160 (1.8GHz/1MB L2/800MHz FSB) and Pentium E2140 (1.6GHz/.1MB L2/800MHz FSB) will be the replacement of Pentium D 935 and Pentium D 925. The prices setting for this two are $84 and $74. Besides, the prices setting for Celeron D 440(2GHz/512KB L2/800MHz FSB) and Celeron D 430 (1.8GHz/512KB L2/800MHz FSB) are $59 and $49 respectively. According to the testing result from the market, either one could provide a better performance than Celeron 360 running at 3.6 GHz, especially for gaming purpose.

i hate to sound stupid here, but whats with the pentium E? i thought the pentium line was dead? as if it isn't about time anyways....

good question...

Pentium E2160 (1.8GHz/1MB L2/800MHz FSB)

looks an aweful lot like T4300, only 1 MB cache... i'm assuming the celerons are only single core, but the Pentium Es i expect should be dual cores, because they are to replace the old Pentium Ds...

product line is getting too broad

should be fun to OC these things though

Pentium is a better name. It rolls off the lips where as Core Two Duo is a pain in the ass to say repeatedly. And besides, EVERYONE knows what a Pentium is and thinks that it means "better then anything else."

If by everyone, you mean people who don't remember the netburst chips, or the uniformed public, then yeah, i can agree with you on that.

sadly, people do remeber the netburst chips... (at least that they were called Pentium 4)

and intel did market them as the best chips you could buy... regardless of what else what out (a64)... and people bought it

i agree, i don't know why they didn't move to pentium V, personally, i've been asked several times what a Core Duo and a Core2 Duo is, and what the difference is, and etc... not so about a pentium, pentium is almost a brand name now,

who is intel? oh they are the guys who make the pentium

I'd be happy with some type of standard naming scheme that lets me know which cpu is of the higher preformance. Where does this Pentium E fall into the line of all the processors in proformance? Hell where do most of the current processors fall.

It was nice when software said it required a 1.8Ghz cpu or better and you knew that your 2.0ghz cpu was better than the 1.8Ghz. Now we have a 1.8Ghz that is better than a 3.6Ghz cpu, how do you explain that to the uninformed public or even list that as a software spec? How do you even figure it out yourself without having to go find a review to see where it falls into the line?

+1! I have a hard time trying to "edumicate" customers on processors these days. Used to be pretty easy and fast to do. Now I get people that ask why two different processor models have the same clock speed but different model #'s. As soon as I start into the L2 cache, etc. they are already getting frustrated, which in turn makes me frustrated. Trying to provide any level of comparison between AMD and Intel CPU's drives me nuts.

Intel's been planning to bring back the Pentium and Celeron as the "value" lines for awhile. I know I read about it months ago.

Now what I've read conflicting reports about is whether the Pentium E2xxx are going to be dual cores or not.

If the Pentium does die, I hope it drags the Celeron down with it :D

Whenever I see Celeron, I think of Pentium's bitch. Although Pentium V would have had a nice ring to it. (I can consider my Core 2 Duo a Pentium V Dual Core, sounds futuristic)

Check this out, type in Pentium and spelchek it. Nothing happens, type in Celeron and do the same (my firefox has the spelchek addon) and it comes in as a typo, to prove that the Celeron will forever be obsolete. Can't even pass a spellcheck.

This is exactly why they did it, because then you can't compare things equally and make the best decision.
Most people have to rely on the sales guy at whereever to tell them that they really need the pentium dxxx or core two duo xxx because the celeron d xxx is too slow. when in reality the slower chip isn't really that much slower, just cheaper.

it would be nice to see a cheap over clocking celery--with enough beans to do some serious games and what not-- i wonder how well they would do down @ 45nm?

who was that that said we would never see inexpensive Q-cores ? there on the horizion too--
