New Logitech Laser Mouse!

Did anyone read the footnotes on ligitechs site? I posted it above and people keep saying its ganna poll at 500/s. Whats the deal with that. The footnotes say 125/s.

the footnotes say that for 98 and me iirc. Probably because of a software limitation in those os's

Features: PC • Cordless • USB • MX™ Optical Engine • Scroll wheel • Application Switch • Internet Forward/Back • Cruise Control™ buttons • Tilt Wheel Plus Zoom • Right-Handed Comfort Grip • Rechargeable • Laser Technology
^^ the G7 features list says it does have back/forward internet buttons. perhaps the button on the side is a tilt button?

I'd love that keyboard and (G7)mouse combo though - wonder when they're gonna release them over here...

That's what I thought was the case with the G5, but, alas, it's not. I'll have to skip this one. I need both forward/back buttons greatly.

the tilt would be on the scroll wheel, it clicks to the right and left for like side scroll

Why did he say perhaps it was the button on the side then if you're saying it's the one on the wheel? I'm still confused!

I got a chance to play with the G5 Hands on. It rocks! it feels great, and the weight system really makes a difference. I suggest everyone intested looks at the talk logitech did at HardOCP Workshop. The keyboard is very exciting, infact i think that may be my next HW Purchase, and finally go away from natural keyboards. Couldnet play with the KB hands on though :(

So can you answer the controversy over whether the G5 has the internet forward/back buttons on it or not?

the G5 doesn't have back and forward buttons for the internet?!

What buttons does it have then. If it doesn't maybe the copperhead will

logitechs website in the comparison link show it has back and forward buttons on it?

Sticky ontop of this very forum links to videos from the workshop.

I got to give props to Logitech for taking what gamers have been saying and working it into there products, Im 90% positive that ill be purchasing the keyboard depending on its feel. Some cooler but less noticed features of the KB are the Game mode switch which simply disables the windows key. (everyone in the workshop almost gave a standing ovation to this!) Also the LCD Screen will have a SDK released so anyone can use it! I was able to talk to the logitec speaker later that day and he said they are looking to get the keyboard out in october/november if i remember correctly

HOLY FLAMING BAT BALLS BATMAN!

I'm buying it as soon as it's available.!

I love my MX510......... all the new mice the released so far are just like the 510 the only real dif is the DBI setting control. I think they should stop making mice and should release some new keyboards. ;)

G7 looks really nice, but I just recently got the MX1000 and MX900 Bluetooth setup for my other PC.

People, flame away at me if you like, but, I'm just going to go out and say it because it has to be said. The whole laser thing is more marketing hype than anything else. People have finally after so many years realized the benefits of a higher resolution and such, so now it sounds great to advertise that you have a new mouse offering such insanely high DPI. The fact is, you need to have the hand of a rather well designed robot to take advantage of anything more powerful than the MX518, and, in fact, it may well be that the MX518 really is overkill. Heck, even the 510 may be, though we needed a nice proper gaming mouse and it came in for us with the great shape design and everything as well as that we did still need a higher resolution than what the others offered at that time. The fact is, jumping up to 2000 DPI basically means nothing whatsoever, but, hey, it sounds great on paper -- green paper with pictures of presidents on it.

The only real benefit being maybe things like the fact that the MX-1000 DID improve on wireless and that sort of thing, this much I won't deny, though I still hate the extra weight of the batteries (slows me down more) and, if you arrange the cord right, a corded mouse works as smoothly as a cordless (so you spend an extra 5 minutes trying to get it just exactly right after you've first taken the thing out of the box.) Actually, I find the shape of the newer one to be more uncomfortable for prolonged periods of gaming than the MX510. The fact is, the MX510 (and I presume 518, I think it was shaped the same) was carefully designed specifically for the gamer -- which means it's designed with prolonged heavy usage in mind, so applies just as easily to the non-gamer, though the extra tracking does go to waste admitedly (there is a certain extent, around 300 dpi or so where resolution helps, but, go past whichever number it works out to and you're really not going to see much difference on the desktop.)

Don't go rushing to buy a G5 or G7 the very split second they hit the shelves, stick around and look at reviews. See if they actually DO improve on things or not. Try to weed through the people who are just logitech enthusiasts and automatically exclaim how much better it is simply because they spent more on it and it has a higher number all nice and shiny on the front of the box. The fact is, you shouldn't choose a MOUSE for bragging purposes, it's meant to suit you... You want bragging rights, save that extra cash and get some pretty case, or a new heatsink or something if you already have a pretty case with the window and all. Throw in some leds or something even. THAT you can brag about. A mouse, you can't. I didn't purchase mine because of the fact that it looks neat with the red swirly stuff that they make this big deal about being unique to each individual mouse, nor did I get it because it promised some uber-high DPI, I got it because it's DESIGNED for gaming down to the very shape and weight of the thing. It's just optimal and I don't honestly believe the MX518 TRULY improved on it either.

Don't know about the keyboard though. There is definitely room for improvement in that area as they haven't really changed much since the 80s frankly. Multimedia buttons are nice (and I'm addicted to being able to scroll with my left hand as well as my right) but, nothing really special, and all basically useless for gaming. Get proper support out of games for extra features and it could be useful. It could also be in the way, I'm not really sure yet. I'll admit that I think maybe the keyboard will be a good thing, though I wouldn't exactly call it revolutionary (much of those features have been offered in the past by other people.)

Oh, and disabling the windows and context keys has been around for a long long time. You can get on cnet or somewhere like that and look around and it shouldn't take you long to find a utility that does this for you. Look a little more and you might find one that does so only when directx or opengl are initialized or somesuch thing even. I know they used to do it for glide because those 3dfx cards really freaked out switching back and forth from the desktop to the game (direct experience on that one.) Remapping keys and such also has been around a while, but, it would be nice to see more first-hand support of such ideas at least I suppose.

I just bought the Saitek gaming keyboard and the MX518, god dammit that pc gaming scene, argh!

Does anyone know if the Copperhead will have the forward/back buttons or not?

i dig it bro

back when i was ranked no.2 in australia at halo pc i was using an mx300 ffs!

although a mouse may give you that edge on accuracy and response, there is no substitute for being plain good at a game.

i'm going to get a g15 because a) i love the look of it, b) my current keyboard is a ghetto aopen with no multimedia keys which is annoying when im playing a game and a song starts playing that i dont like

il get the g5 because a) i love the look of it also, b) im not a huge fan of the diamondback shape or look, c) i love the look of it, i couldnt care less about the 2000 dpi, im just getting it because i like the mx5XX series shape and this one is particularly snazzy

but i might get the copperhead instead, im not sure, im not a huge fan of the diamondback shape

edit: il just get whatever is cheaper out of the g5 and the copperhead. but i can hardly talk about mouses, i have an mx310, mx500, mx510 in blue, mx510 in red, mx518, razer viper, razer diamondback (chamoeleon), razer diamondback plasma edition, razer boomslang and an mx1000

theyre all hanging up on my wall lol, i hve a mouse rack :p

im really really liking this mouse. that keyboards pretty secksi, too.

im lookin at killin wires, and thats looking really good. :D

Hmm... I just looked a little more carefully at that mouse. Well, I can't be 100% certain, but, I must admit that it looks like they went back to the MX5xx design on the shape of it. It doesn't look like that squished little thing they made with the MX1000. As nearly as I can tell, G5 = MX519 (is there a 600 already? If not, then let's call it MX600 just for the fun and simplicity of it) + laser and all that. The only actual real life improvement I see on the MX518 would be the weight cartridge. I'm sorry, but, 2000 DPI means jack unless you are an eagle-eyed CAD artist with all the control of a robotic arm.

Guess it has potential, but, I still don't see any way it would actually be better for real life use I must say. Thank god they didn't stay with the horrible shape of the MX1000 though. I was really worried I'd have to really make this MX510 last a long time indeed (then again, the mouse I had before it and the one before that both lasted probably more than four years each, and my last one wasn't messed up so much as I just wanted a better mouse.)

is it larger or smaller then the microsoft explorer series? I went back to the inteli mouse optical because the explorer was to big for my hand

It is the same phsyical design as the MXxxx series. It also adds the MX laser system and does USB Polling at 500 time a sec (They are dubbing it FullSpeed USB) Another small improvment are teflon like feet that are HUGE (like the top fourth and bottom fourth of the mouse)

If its any help, its the same size as the MXxxx series

Actually, the Copperhead has TWO buttons on EACH side. There are photos that show this.

Daddy likes I will buy the mouse and keyboard soon as it is available. And btw to the guy above with the long post ranting on and on stfu dude the mouse can't hurt your gameing just improve it regardless how much or little. Btw reminds me of watching quarter mile races with top fuel dragsters and the mechanic made some carb adjustment to gain 10 more horsepower. His quote was hey 10hp might not seem like much with a 5000hp motor but its still 10 more horsepower and effects the speed of the car slightly but still has a effect on the e.t.

i've never held a mx5xx series. how does it compare to this mouse?

IMO_l.jpg

this is what I have.

why dont you go to circuit city or best buy or someplace and try one. they usually have them on display to play w/.

dont bother asking questions like that. everybodys hands and styles are different. youre much better off trying it out for yourself.

I was wonder if it was larger or smaller. I live in a village. all those places are an hour away

That's what I used to have. The size is roughly the same, it's a tad taller, but, not really noticably longer or shorter. Here's what will happen if you buy even a MX510. First, you'll think "what a weird shape," and you'll need about an hour, maybe as much as two to get used to it. Then you'll think, "oh crap, I can never use that old intellimouse again, I never realized how much it sucked." It doesn't just feel more comfortable after long hours of gaming, and it doesn't just increase accuracy, it just plain WORKS better. Like I've been saying, ten million DPI means jack if you can't control the mouse, but, this thing throws a high enough resolution for heavy gamers with a mouse carefully weighted and shaped all into one. Supposedly the MX518 is a little better, but, I think mainly it's just a higher DPI and slightly faster tracking. Overall, there may not be a noticable difference, or it may be a little better. Either way, if it's cheap, no harm in getting it instead I suppose.

Circuit City and Best Buy do tend to have one out where you can at least feel it and see the weird shape, but that isn't really of much use because when it comes to a mouse, touching it means jack if you can't actually use it, and, last I checked none of the stores put them on display with test computers so you can try to test the feel of them. At first you may not even like the sahpe, but, believe me, it's designed for your right hand (if you're left handed, start running in fear now, this will give you carpel tunnel bad I'm sure.) Once I got it I realized that it really makes no sense how all mice are designed to be completely symetric so they can be for both right and left handers. Firstly, even _I_ who is left handed at various random things such as writing, am right handed at the mouse, secondly, there's no reason they can't make a mirror image of the thing and sell that for left handers. In fact, if they don't do this already, I'm very dissapointed in Logitech because they know that there are the occasional rare people who do want to use a mouse with their left hand.

In retrospect, the G5 may be just as good. Still bugs me that they are using marketing hype such as 2000 DPI though. I mean, even on a printer a resolution that high isn't going to do very much else. (Actually, someone told me that all printers really still use 360x360 or whatever it was, but use little tricks to try to sort of make a higher resolution.) I won't be buying one until my MX510 dies on me, and that's only because it will be a pretty darned cheap mouse after so many years. However, I suppose if you're one of those people who insists on wireless, the G5 is your best hope really as the MX700 really wasn't as good as the MX510 and I still swear that the MX1000 will make your hand bleed internally if you ever dare to try to play Diablo 2 or something.

i think the G5 is corded and the G7 is the cordless. I have had my mouse for years and ti's time to get something more comfortable :)

CyByte said:

uhhh. yeah, thats right. hasnet that already been said though?

Ok, sorry, the only advantage to getting the G5 then that I can see would be maybe just maybe the fact that you can probably adjust the weight to within a pretty small number of grams, though I really must say I find nothing wrong with the weight of my MX510 myself (maybe some people need a bit more or less? I guess it depends... Seems like less is better though, those battery powered mice are a lot harder to game with for me.) Seems like rather a lot of waste of money for such a little thing to me considering that the MX518 is half the price and just as good for those of us without the robotic arm (mine's in the mail, should arrive any year now...) I guess it is safe to say that the G7 is good for people who needed a cordless MX51x mouse because the MX700 was a bit lacking in some of those features.

I looked over the keyboard. I definitely stick to what I said earlier that it actually is a good idea. For one thing, there has never been any vague semblance of any official LCD display type thing. Perhaps if this goes over well others will do the same and finally LCDs will become a pretty standard thing. Of course, winamp WILL have a plugin to support that thing. It's impossible to even imagine otherwise. (No, I don't mean built in, I mean a fan will make one within a very short period of time of getting one such keyboard.)

$80 starting price though? No thanks, I'll stick to my good old internet navigator. In fact, the remappable gamekeys seem like a great idea (btw, someone else has already done this, I saw it at best buy months ago) but, I notice that it only gives you blocks of 2x3 when normal keys are 3x3. Normally you do use those 2x6, but, I for one use the bottom three for things such as lean left/right or whatever. Then, no tab, shift, or ctrl (ouch!) Space might be tough too. No, only advantage I see of those is essentially an extra set of function keys that can be configured in the games lacking a proper configuration. Well, at least the rest is good. I'd spend $40 for it in a heartbeat, but, not more. (Yes, I know.)

I have a logitech MX3100 combo. The MX1000 is too heavy for me. After using it for hours every day, my hand feels quite pain. I don't want to develop any problem over time.

I have MX500, can anyone tell me if the G5 and G7 lighter or heavier than MX500? I want a wireless mouse if it is light. I don't want a mouse as heavy as MX1000.

By the way, I can tell the different between MX1000 and MX500 (quite obvious). I like the tracking of MX1000 but it is too heavy if you use for many hours each day.

Thanks.

That's one of the things I hate about wireless. G5 IS lighter, I have no doubt on this. You see, it's corded, versus the MX1000 being cordless. It also has an adjustable weight by the look of it so you can get it just right. G7 may be the same weight, there's only so much you can do when it's the batteries that add so much weight (ever moved around a UPS? They should nicknamed the darned things "backbreakers.") G5 is corded and looks to me like essentially it's the "MX519" in that it's basically next in that type of line if a bit different, so I think it will be comfort itself like the MX510 and MX518. They MAY have tried to do something with the G7, maybe removed every single thing they could that would affect the weight in any way (lol, you can always make speed holes!) but, I wouldn't expect too much.

I still say any but the most picky (as in that sort who plays tournaments to earn money even probably won't need such a thing) will be just as happy with a MX518 at the worst, MX510 if they aren't super-picky. But *shrugs* After reading more, I at least don't hate the G5 since it has some actual features that make it more than just a laser stuck on a MX518. Not 2x more IMO, but, it's still worth the cost just to have a mouse that doesn't hurt if you absolutely cannot go lower than the 1000.

BTW, I thought the 510 seemed kind of bulky at first, and clearly this line of thinking is what made the 1000 so weirdly thin, but, you know, after a while I got used to it and found that my accuracy was still way up from my previous smaller optical mouse. Mind you, one of the main advantages -- being able to actually pick it up just by lifting instead of pressing in really hard and lifting -- will still apply to the well designed plain shapes like the razors. Don't know a better way to describe what I mean by that. I think part of the idea on the 510 and I believe 518 (same exact shape, right?) is to keep the hand more open than on a normal mouse so that it's a little more comfortable for the long run. I never liked the shape of the 1000. I pray that my suspicions are right and G5/7 will be more normal. Does anyone actually know more for certain about that? Maybe some better pictures somewhere, perhaps from an earlier model sent to some reviewer or something?
