I'd love that keyboard and (G7)mouse combo though - wonder when they're gonna release them over here...
jkr266 said:the footnotes say that for 98 and me iirc. Probably because of a software limitation in those os's

I suggest everyone intested looks at the talk logitech did at HardOCP Workshop. The keyboard is very exciting, infact i think that may be my next HW Purchase, and finally go away from natural keyboards. Couldnet play with the KB hands on though![]()

I got to give props to Logitech for taking what gamers have been saying and working it into there products, Im 90% positive that ill be purchasing the keyboard depending on its feel. Some cooler but less noticed features of the KB are the Game mode switch which simply disables the windows key. (everyone in the workshop almost gave a standing ovation to this!) Also the LCD Screen will have a SDK released so anyone can use it! I was able to talk to the logitec speaker later that day and he said they are looking to get the keyboard out in october/november if i remember correctly
Nazo said:People, flame away at me if you like, but, I'm just going to go out and say it because it has to be said. The whole laser thing is more marketing hype than anything else. People have finally after so many years realized the benefits of a higher resolution and such, so now it sounds great to advertise that you have a new mouse offering such insanely high DPI. The fact is, you need to have the hand of a rather well designed robot to take advantage of anything more powerful than the MX518, and, in fact, it may well be that the MX518 really is overkill. Heck, even the 510 may be, though we needed a nice proper gaming mouse and it came in for us with the great shape design and everything as well as that we did still need a higher resolution than what the others offered at that time. The fact is, jumping up to 2000 DPI basically means nothing whatsoever, but, hey, it sounds great on paper -- green paper with pictures of presidents on it.
The only real benefit being maybe things like the fact that the MX-1000 DID improve on wireless and that sort of thing, this much I won't deny, though I still hate the extra weight of the batteries (slows me down more) and, if you arrange the cord right, a corded mouse works as smoothly as a cordless (so you spend an extra 5 minutes trying to get it just exactly right after you've first taken the thing out of the box.) Actually, I find the shape of the newer one to be more uncomfortable for prolonged periods of gaming than the MX510. The fact is, the MX510 (and I presume 518, I think it was shaped the same) was carefully designed specifically for the gamer -- which means it's designed with prolonged heavy usage in mind, so applies just as easily to the non-gamer, though the extra tracking does go to waste admitedly (there is a certain extent, around 300 dpi or so where resolution helps, but, go past whichever number it works out to and you're really not going to see much difference on the desktop.)
Don't go rushing to buy a G5 or G7 the very split second they hit the shelves, stick around and look at reviews. See if they actually DO improve on things or not. Try to weed through the people who are just logitech enthusiasts and automatically exclaim how much better it is simply because they spent more on it and it has a higher number all nice and shiny on the front of the box. The fact is, you shouldn't choose a MOUSE for bragging purposes, it's meant to suit you... You want bragging rights, save that extra cash and get some pretty case, or a new heatsink or something if you already have a pretty case with the window and all. Throw in some leds or something even. THAT you can brag about. A mouse, you can't. I didn't purchase mine because of the fact that it looks neat with the red swirly stuff that they make this big deal about being unique to each individual mouse, nor did I get it because it promised some uber-high DPI, I got it because it's DESIGNED for gaming down to the very shape and weight of the thing. It's just optimal and I don't honestly believe the MX518 TRULY improved on it either.
Don't know about the keyboard though. There is definitely room for improvement in that area as they haven't really changed much since the 80s frankly. Multimedia buttons are nice (and I'm addicted to being able to scroll with my left hand as well as my right) but, nothing really special, and all basically useless for gaming. Get proper support out of games for extra features and it could be useful. It could also be in the way, I'm not really sure yet. I'll admit that I think maybe the keyboard will be a good thing, though I wouldn't exactly call it revolutionary (much of those features have been offered in the past by other people.)
Oh, and disabling the windows and context keys has been around for a long long time. You can get on cnet or somewhere like that and look around and it shouldn't take you long to find a utility that does this for you. Look a little more and you might find one that does so only when directx or opengl are initialized or somesuch thing even. I know they used to do it for glide because those 3dfx cards really freaked out switching back and forth from the desktop to the game (direct experience on that one.) Remapping keys and such also has been around a while, but, it would be nice to see more first-hand support of such ideas at least I suppose.
If i remember correctly: No. but they DO Have a side buttion on each side.HOCP4ME said:Does anyone know if the Copperhead will have the forward/back buttons or not?
It is the same phsyical design as the MXxxx series. It also adds the MX laser system and does USB Polling at 500 time a sec (They are dubbing it FullSpeed USB) Another small improvment are teflon like feet that are HUGE (like the top fourth and bottom fourth of the mouse)Nazo said:Hmm... I just looked a little more carefully at that mouse. Well, I can't be 100% certain, but, I must admit that it looks like they went back to the MX5xx design on the shape of it. It doesn't look like that squished little thing they made with the MX1000. As nearly as I can tell, G5 = MX519 (is there a 600 already? If not, then let's call it MX600 just for the fun and simplicity of it) + laser and all that. The only actual real life improvement I see on the MX518 would be the weight cartridge. I'm sorry, but, 2000 DPI means jack unless you are an eagle-eyed CAD artist with all the control of a robotic arm.
Guess it has potential, but, I still don't see any way it would actually be better for real life use I must say. Thank god they didn't stay with the horrible shape of the MX1000 though. I was really worried I'd have to really make this MX510 last a long time indeed (then again, the mouse I had before it and the one before that both lasted probably more than four years each, and my last one wasn't messed up so much as I just wanted a better mouse.)
If its any help, its the same size as the MXxxx seriesCyByte said:is it larger or smaller then the microsoft explorer series? I went back to the inteli mouse optical because the explorer was to big for my hand
