And again, since you're only gaming, ZERO reason to go for Socket 2011.
 
After weighing the evidence, I don't think the 2-7% gain in performance is really going to matter a whole lot. If I can be convinced otherwise, then I may be able to hold out until Ivy + Z77. Regardless, next upgrade will be 4-5 years away, so probably Skylake/Skymont or AMD if they bring anything to the table.

Thoughts on the case and CPU?

Since I'm gunning for as many 4-pin fan headers as possible, I'm also considering the Gene-Z instead of the Intel board.

Might be able to get away with a GTX 680 if I cut back to 128GB SSD's and stay with the 2500K.

2 to 7? I've been hearing of 15% to 20%.

Case wise, I'd go with one of the Corsairs. However if you're still gonna insist on your crazy plan on installing as many fans you can, don't bother with the 550D as that's gonna negate the point of going with the 550D in the first place. Not a fan of the Gene-Z for a normal ATX system since there are equal quality ATX mobos out there. If your current GTX 570 is no longer meeting your needs, then go for the GTX 680.

15-20%, eh? Shit, that would certainly be worth the wait, then. Especially with the TDP on a successful diet.

I did read the article you linked about the fans. However, those were with 3-pin fans running at a fixed RPM. I'd like to experiment with variable-RPM PWM fans just for shits and grins, similar to how they tested.

The 400R hasn't moved out of my shopping cart, so I'll likely stick with it.

My 570 is doing great, but I'm on the fence about it's longevity...

Use it until it no longer meets your gaming needs or until it dies out of warranty. Otherwise, your GTX 570 should be fine unless you're suddenly craving a lot more FPS.
 
Anyone know of any good reviews and comparisons on the Crucial M4, Samsung 830, and Plextor M3 SSD's?
 
No reason, the M4 and M3 are practically the same drive, both use the same Marvell controller and sync NAND. The Samsungs also use sync NAND, but have the Samsung designed / built controller. They are a little slower in some cases, a little faster in some cases, but probably not worth the price premium.
 
What silent-circuit said. Basically comes down to which company you trust more. I trust Crucial a lot more than I do Plextor hence why I tend to recommend Crucial a lot more. Not saying Plextor is bad but just not as trustworthy as Crucial IMO.

One more thing, and this has to do with the HSF. I've got a Xigmatek Dark Knight (S1283V) new in the box, but I've been reading some things that the included LGA1155 mounting kit isn't implemented very well as far as installation/retention on the motherboard.. Can anyone confirm if, in fact, I should have concern with this?

If there is a concern, then I'll likely just end up getting a Hyper212+

Can't confirm that. I'd say just use the Xigmatek, see if it works, if it doesn't, then get the Hyper 212+.
 
I'll give it a whirl and check things out. If it doesn't sit well with me, then I'll go with an alternate hsf.

Wife just gave the green light for me to spend $700 total for CPU, MoBo, and whatever else. :cool:

Well the mobos and CPUs nor the pricing for those parts haven't been announced. So I honeslty can't recommend or comment on which part you should choose.
