Now that we have a few prizes to give, including a Athlon X2 box, it's now more than time to have a contest. Before we start one, we need to have ideas so it's fair to everyone while motivating us enough to kick MPC out of the road...

Share ideas and suggestions here and we'll see from there with a potential start in 1-2 weeks when all the strings is all tied.

Ah yes the contest. I have been thinking about couple of ideas, now I guess I'll need to modify some of them and post them. That'll be ten hours or so from now, I'm about to leave and drop off my application for a job or couple jobs then I've got some queer exam later in the afternoon and another boring class to attend to.

Life doesn't stop if u don't fold so FOLD ON!

..... then I've got some queer exam later in the afternoon and another boring class to attend to.

Is it an exam to determine if you are queer or an exam to become or declare yourself a queer? ;) I had no idea there were even exams for something like this. I'm kidding with you of course...

Anyhow a contest sounds great. I'll double check but I think I have some really nice DDR400 ram I could also donate. I think it's 2x1gb Corsair XMS Pro with the led's across the top of the modules.

I guess that could bring the count up to 3 GB ;) Yeah I know something...

Edit: No the queer exam is on Comp. Nutrition - it's stupidly massive, the last time I took an exam in that class, in span of only two hours it was 37 pages thick and we have 35-40 students in that class. Seeing the professor lugging that into the class is uneasy.

Have the ram I mentioned here at my shop today. Specifically it is Corsair XMS Pro with the LED's along the top of the heatsinks. Is a 2x1Gb pair part number CMX1024-3200Pro. What ever the contest is I'll be willing to donate the pair as a prize.

I think that some consideration should go to users who help out the community, not just the ones that turn a lot of points.

Those are the ones we need to look out winning prizes.

Just my opinion.

Exactly my opinion as well so It's pretty hard to find something fair...

To expand on my post earlier in this thread.

A raffle does sound like a good idea.

A poll would also be okay but runs the risk of turning into a popularity contest.

For the Raffle - here are a list of qualifications to get your name in the hat.

Point Generation - How much are they helping our team
User Contributions - How much do they post suggestions & guides
Community Attitude - Are they supportive of others and willing to help troubleshoot problems

Those last two might be tough to gauge though. People might not like being left out because of lack of posts or something.

Nothing will please everyone; point generation is good for the big(ger) producers, but the people who may really *need* the new hardware are automatically left off the radar. Long time members who have folded for the long haul and are active enough to actually get ahold of on the boards... may pose it's own difficulties :D

I'd say just pick something the donator likes, and go with that I guess

its all good. although i admit being completely baffled with the last contest. but then im just a little guy contributing as best i can :D

:( my 1 machine pales in comparison to everyone else here :(

im for the raffle

I think maybe a raffle is good also. I do think there should be a minimum requirement so it does not end up like one of Kyles giveaway threads (5 jillion noobie accounts) in hot deals though. Maybe something like must be an active folder, must have been an active folder for the [H]orde for at least 30 days. Then if those 2 requirements are met all you have to do is make one post in a sticky thread stating your interest in an entry and maybe why you fold. I may also have a couple of other bits to donate in addition to the ram I mentioned.

I just think making it a raffle as outlined gives all folders for the [H]orde a fair shot at the prize. I'd even think some of the vets who dont need the prize might even decline to participate which would give those who really need the prize better odds. Maybe not though - winning any prize is always nice. ;)

Would it be a good idea to have people donate like a buck or 2 to get in as well to maybe have that cash set aside to purchase something for the next contest/givaway?

So far, MixManSC's idea might be the best. Instead of pulling hair to find a idea, just make a nice raffle with minimal requirement (being a active folder for at least 30 days and post a badge). 1 entry = 1 chance so everyone get the same shot at winning no matter what production.

However, I would also like another contest to boost the [H]orde production and that's where I might need ideas.

Post a thing on the frontpage for new folder contest, give them 30 days from the day of the posting, whoever has the best production after 30 days wins?

Raffle with minimum requirements sound interesting. Only if the person holding it dresses up in a nice tacky outfit with tons of hot raffle babes and records/streams it live.

As far as the last raffle goes. People were notified that they needed 20k points and be an active user on the team. Each ticket was 5 bucks. You could purchase up to 10 tickets. Paypal was how the donations were collected. Took about a month to get the donations in, and as more people joined, some of the prizes got upgraded. Leme look for the thread.

There is another contest which was done. It was basically a raffle but in order to get "tickets" you had to ramp your production. Your level of production at the beginning of the contest determined what "bracket" you were in. The higher the bracket you started in, the more you had to ramp to earn a "ticket".

I think this worked out very well since even small producers had a chance and big producers were not able to just plow through and end up with hundreds of "tickets". I believe this was the setup King did on hardfolding to keep track of everything. The number of tickets was determined by the percentage of change from your starting production to your ending production.

After the contest period ended, the person running it made up tickets for each person in the contest, put them all in a hat and then had his mother draw the winner as well as a couple of runners up as there were some smaller undisclosed prizes and also in case someone "defaulted" on their prize somehow.

I think that worked out very well for what we did. I do not have the percentages to be used for the different brackets although they might be in a thread concerning this contest. I think the contest was about a year or so ago for reference.

Great... The ramp-up contest is something I do remember (is that the one with a X1950 card as prize ?).

I have talked to Lethal and Kyle and I got a pre-approval for a raffle and a contest so I will take care of the raffle part myself. I would like someone (a etablished member preferably) to handle the ramp-up raffle side with King_N for the stats aspect.

Like that, the plain raffle will have a good prize. Each folder have a base 1 ticket for free + 1 ticket for each $ donation slice (amount to be determined). The pot will be handled by me or someone else (to be determined) and if there is enough money in the pot, like 200-300, we may be getting a complete dual-core barebone for folding. If there is a excess, this can be used in the ramp-up raffle to improve the prize.

I think the ramp-up raffle would be the one with the X2 system as prize. What do all of you think of this proposal ?

I think the ramp up project as you have indicated Xilikon is a good idea. However how shall the raffle one go about? At the same time I feel as if people were purchasing raffle tickets, it kinda of does takes away the fun from it.

especially for those of us that really can't afford to be shelling out for many raffle tickets....i think for a raffle, it should basically be active forum folders w/ a pretty low cap on tickets to keep it even

Maybe for the non active folders they could shell out some xAmount and they can win and in turn the whole "profit" gained will go towards to new rig or so for the upcoming contest or something like that... I don't know really. I would love to see money be left out of this.

So would I.. Money, as in actual cash, should not be a consideration here. I really think that in order to participate, you need to be an active folder.

Outside of that, I don't really have many ideas... sorry... but I don't think it would be fair to open this up to everyone.. Many of us have made some considerable efforts lately to ramp up, borg, participate in the forum more and all in all be an active part of the team, including all of the new members we've seen join over the last few weeks.

And any benefits the winner of the contest/raffle may glean should be put towards the good of the [H]orde...

Just my opinion...

I am bored, and have addressed a lot of stuff like this in the past, so what the heck, weighing in...

I think that some consideration should go to users who help out the community, not just the ones that turn a lot of points.

Stuff like this is harder than it sounds. How do you determine who helps more? What level of helping is worthy of what reward? It becomes a system that is totally subjective... and this leads to the "no fairs" rearing their ugly head.

best rampage?

This has been done in the past. Some people appeared to enjoy, but I personally wasn't to pleased with how it worked. On the one hand, we did see a huge jump in production, which was great, that was the point of the contest. However, the problem was it came down to the resources people had available. There were two members able to hit up work/school/whatever and pretty much blew everyone else's doors off. I have to imagine it probably wasn't very exciting to the rest of the people competing who really just didn't have the resources to compete no matter how much effort they put into it.

As said above, contributations and attitude are subjective, and could lead to complaints. Stuff like this came up a few times in the planning stages of various contests, and always got shot down. It wasn't worth the hassle.

As far as the last raffle goes. People were notified that they needed 20k points and be an active user on the team. Each ticket was 5 bucks. You could purchase up to 10 tickets. That was an old school raffle too.. back when I was playing lone soldier on the contests. TBH, I liked that one. I was happy with how it turned out. As I recall, there were two brackets to keep it fair. A 20k and up group, and a 150k and up group... or maybe that was a different contest, I really don't remember, it was a long time ago. Anyways, I think it went well, even though the argument that it was independent of production aside from the point requirement is valid.

There is another contest which was done. It was basically a raffle but in order to get "tickets" you had to ramp your production. Your level of production at the beginning of the contest determined what "bracket" you were in. The higher the bracket you started in, the more you had to ramp to earn a "ticket".

I don't remember all the details on this contest, but I do remember one thing... planning it was a bitch. The bunch of us who worked on it spend hours and hours deliberating how that could be done fairly, and Randy spent a ton of time working in excel trying to figure out all the math and whatnot. That took a TON of planning. I think it worked pretty well too, but just as a heads up to whoever would be coordinating this, I don't suggest tackling it alone. It took five of us to get that one off the ground.

So would I.. Money, as in actual cash, should not be a consideration here. I really think that in order to participate, you need to be an active folder.

Outside of that, I don't really have many ideas... sorry... but I don't think it would be fair to open this up to everyone.. Monetary contributions have their ups and downs. The argument that production or contribution or whatever should be a factor is certainly best, in my opinion. It's just as fun, and spurs a production increase, which is the ultimate goal here. However, the one thing to be said for some sort of cash flow is that it allows for better prizes. Better prizes = more motivation. More motivation = more production, if you can find a way to tie the two in together. The first two contests I did here, I saw a huge amount of money come from this team, more than I would ever have expected. The first contest brought in exactly $600, which allowed me to purchase some nice hardware to be given away. The second one, I think was also $600 or so, maybe a bit north of that, and it allowed us to give away three complete computers. Later on in things, we had someone step up and contribute a huge amount of hardware, and that removed any need for money to be a factor. However, you can only do so much with people clearing out their basements and donating old hardware, you know? If you have some goodies already for a contest, or someone willing to fund it, I totally agree that not involving money is better. However, if a bit of cash flow is required to fund the contest, you can see where money ties in. Either finding a way to include it in a system where production also plays a roll, or perhaps in the form of open donations (thats how the first contest worked.. money was totally optional, and $600 still came in. I was astounded). Either way, something to consider.

That said... good luck to whatever you guys do. I am sure it will be fun :)

Thank you for putting your 2 cent on contests, it's appreciated with your experience. We will put this in good use and find ideas.

I agree with you that when we try to find ways to be fair, there will be no perfect system and someone will always complaint no matter what...

As a suggestion, if you did try do so something based off participation or something else subjective, just be very upfront about it from the get-go. Generally speaking, I think it would be a lot easier to execute something like that if it was the sort of contest where you had X amount of time for people to enter before the contest started, and once it stars, whoever is in is in. This means that everyone has to be clear on the rules and procedures before it even starts, and it leaves less room to bitch. Likewise, if it's something that is subjective, set up a panel or something. Have 3-4 people who will evaluate members and then everyone can get together and make a decision on if their contributions are worthy or a reward or whatever sort of situation you set up. Make it painfully clear that everything is reviewed on a case-by-case basis and totally up to the board to decide what is worthy or praise and what is not. As long as all the entrants agree to something like this up front, they can't bitch about it later.

Bottom line is, it IS possible to execute a contest without anyone bitching. It just takes careful planning and consideration and being very precise up front about how things will be run. Just make sure you cover all your bases.

I'll have to agree with Brian on this one.... we did A LOT of planning, both behind the scenes(early stages) and with open discussions, to make sure we had all of our bases covered... It's tough to balance everything and not leave any loopholes open/etc... I did a lot of Excel work for alot of these contests, wrote many a macro, and we all spent alot of time testing and/or tweaking things to make sure everything worked the way it should... We tried very hard to make sure that any way to cheat was either prevented against or easy to label (and be a disqualification,etc)...

You have to remember, everyone sees things differently, and you have to look at it from every angle to make sure you have a rock solid set of rules/guidelines/etc... Explain everything, leave nothing up for interpretation... If you leave any wiggle room, someone will take advantage of it...

We always tried to come up with contests that not only brought people in or increased production, but also fueled that friendly rivalry we all have... A contest has to be fun and interesting, and open to as many people as possible...

Anyhow, I'll stop rambling now lol

Good luck

I like this idea:).

Thanks Viper and OSU guy for your comments.

You both have lots of experience with these contests.

Any ideas on moving forward? I have an option I will PM you with X. It may be a decent alternative for some processors.

I'll second or third the raffle type idea. a small monetary donation towards the whole makes the contest prize exponentially better. How about a hybrid of $5 raffle tickets and maybe a free ticket for every 1000PPD ramp up from the start date of the contest and everyone starts with 1 ticket? That way even some of our younger folders with less income can have an equal chance at the prize.

Just an idea.
