Its been a long time since Ive been on this forum and for that I apologize. I would like some ideas on a new build. I have a K8N Diamond plus right now. I havent kept up with the latest in processor speeds or memory for that matter so it would be nice to get some feedback on what i should look at for a new build. Ive have major issues with win 7 on most of my games including Oblivion and BF2 after the win 7 install and I have a feeling its a combination of Mismatched memory which I have and an older CPU / Memory set may be part of the issue. By the way my drives and power supply are good. Thanks for any tips. By the way Windows 7 has been as unstable as XP so far.

Please answer the stickied "ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FIRST!" so that we can help you better.

And yes please be very specific about the exact make and model of the PSU. No offense, but a good majority of times that people here in GenHard have said that their "PSU is good", they're usually dead wrong. The "good" PSU will usually end up harming the PC. So let's make sure that isn't the case here.

By the way Windows 7 has been as unstable as XP so far.

Are you sure you meant UNstable? Because XP was the most stable Windows ever, followed if not surpassed by Windows 7 for sure.

Maybe you do have a hardware problem. Maybe you have a crappy PSU or you're using a legacy piece of hardware? Mismatched memory doesn't help either.

well I found out so far I cant copy and paste my specs. I realy dont like win 7 so far. Im pretty sure I have a socket 989 proc but ill have to check. I know I built this system on a necessity basis and I built it right [EDIT Before] the new AMD procs were coming out.

ok the main problems I can see is that my memory manufacturers are mismatched as in 1 gig of Corsair and one gig of Mushkin but both have the same specs. My Proc is good Im pretty sure but I dont have the time or the extras to check if a new one would be better. Im mostly looking for upgrade info for a new system. Am I helping here or just making noise?

god I hate the noobie thing, I had over 1000 posts and was pretty active in 2002 before something happened to the forum and people lost their post records on HF. Im not a noob really just out of the loop for a while. In fact My HardOCP mouse pad has some pretty sweet wear :)

OK here goes

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming and anything else
2) What's your budget, none but I dont buy brand new Tech, Ill stay back 6 months.
3) Where do you live? Your Mamas house
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? top of the line CPU, RAM, or close.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Drives, Case, PSU.
6) Will you be overclocking? Nope
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have? 21"
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Soon
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Nope Firewire? Yep Crossfire or SLI support? Yep etc. Yep.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit? Yep 64.

Please answer questions 2,3, and 5 again. For question 2, we need a budget and your answer does not make sense. It really doesn't matter when the parts were released. It all depends on what performance/features they offer for the price. As such, a part released just a month ago will be a better buy than parts released 6 months ago.

For question 3, believe it or not we do have a lot of Brits, Aussies, Canucks, etc visit this forum. In addition, if you live in the U.S, if you list the state and/or city you live in, that lets us know whether or not you're near a Fry's or Microcenter so that you can take advantage of the hardware deals those stores have. For question 5, we need to know the exact make and model of the PSU. Otherwise, it's a waste of time to recommend parts.

Oh and will you be needing a new video card as well? Also, which case will you be reusing?

I started out in 2000 overclocking and really making some great gains but now days it seems like your pissing in the ocean as far as how much you would get out of it. Im running businesses now and I cant waste time with unstable systems so I need to build something fast enough to run win 7 and solid enough to not crash all the time, plus the business apps. Oblivion actually crashes Win 7 completely and I have to hit the restart. Thats pretty bad.

How in the fuck can you copy and past the system info in win 7? This is stupid.

Well Windows 7 won't tell me what PSU you have. So you might have to open up the PC and see.

In any case: Go to the Control Panel, click "Performance Information and Tools", Ctrl-A the poped-up window and then Ctrl-C the contents into a post.

EDIT: or try NoForgiveness' way :)

This seems like a lot of info, I dont know that Im sure That I want to broadcast all that info.

Ok. Just pick and choose what you to share. Simple as that.

Anyway, if you still want to go through with this upgrade and if you're waay to unsure what info to share, just tell us what PSU you will be using. Yes I've been harping on this but it is quite important. Oh, and please answer questions 2 and 3 again.

I need a machine that will play all the new games and be good for the next few years. Ill deal with the graphics situation but I would just like to know what the more stable platforms on Win 7 there were and your advise for a future gaming rig. Thanks.

Well the situation is that virtually every single current as well as well built systems of the past 3-4 years are pretty stable with Windows 7. In fact, there's not much of a difference in stability between a 3 year old C2D system and a more modern Core i7 or AMD Phenom II setup with Windows 7. At least from my experiences anyway.

We can't exactly give you advice on a gaming rig if we don't have a budget. We can certainly recommend a great system but it's a bit pointless to do so if you can't afford it.

I guess I can afford it but I usually stay about 6 months to 2 years behind depending on the new games coming out. Can you make a guess on what the titties system would be right now and I can make a decision whether I want tho go that rout. Thanks man.

Well since you haven't provided any real info and seem very reluctant/lazy to do so, I'm just gonna assume that this is gonna be a completely new system including the PSU, drives, case. Also gonna assume that this completely new system is for 1680x1050. and finally, gonna assume that your definition of "soon" is 2 weeks:

$239 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition CPU + GIGABYTE GA-770TA-UD3 AM3 AMD 770 Motherboard combo
$110 - G.Skill Ripjaw Series F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$170 - XFX HD-577A-ZNFC XXX Edition Radeon HD 5770 1GB PCI-E Video Card
$56 - Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$70 - Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W PSU
$50 - Cooler Master Elite 335 RC-335-KKN1-GP ATX Case
---
Total: $695 plus tax and shipping.

That's all you really need for 1680x1050 gaming. The WD5000AAKS drive is actually faster than many of the old Raptor drives and is on par with many of the new Velociraptor drives. The HD 5770 1GB is just right for 1680x1050 gaming. Not much of a performance difference between a Core i7 930 and a Phenom II X4 955 CPU in gaming. 4GB of RAM is all that you need.

EDIT:
And for the hell of it since these build lists were already in my Notepad++:

A tad more forward looking than the $700 build posted earlier:
$295 - AMD Phenom II X6 1055T CPU + G.Skill Ripjaw Series F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$90 - Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H AMD 880G HDMI mATX Motherboard
$240 - XFX HD-583X-ZNFV Radeon HD 5830 1GB PCI-E Video Card
$56 - Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$70 - Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W PSU
$60 - Cooler Master RC-590-KKN1-GP ATX Case
----
Total: $811 plus tax and shipping.

High-end Gaming system but pretty damn overkill for 1680x1050 and will last only 6 to 8 months longer than the $811 build in games:
$470 - Intel Core i7-930 CPU + Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R X58 ATX Motherboard Combo
$170 - G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ 3 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$320 - XFX HD-585A-ZAFC Radeon HD 5850 1GB PCI-E Video Card
$56 - Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$120 - Antec Truepower New TP750 Blue 750W PSU
$60 - Cooler Master RC-590-KKN1-GP ATX Case
---
Total: $1196 plus tax and shipping.

Chose to go with a significantly better quality and cooling case for the above builds. Had to use Amazon for the case.
