I’m building a new(er) computer and I would like to have some input on it. I’m building it in a Antec mini P180 case so I’m more limited when it comes to the motherboard selection.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming, Virtual Machines, Gaming, 3D Modeling
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Around 1300
3) Where do you live?
Chicagoland
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
CPU
RAM
Motherboard
PSU
Graphic Card
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
I’m going to be reusing the 300GB raptors from my old computer.
6) Will you be overclocking?
If I can get the CPU to 4.0Ghz(minor OC).
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
Have a 24” Dell.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
In the next two months.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
RAID 0 and able to use a ATI 5870.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Yes, Windows 7 64bit

As much as I like Corsair power supplies, I wouldn't go for an 80plus bronze unit at that power level. I'd get an OCZ Z650 (silver and cheaper) or Seasonix X650 (gold and more expensive)

The Xeon Lynnfield is $40 cheaper and only 266Mhz slower, so I'd suggest that over the i7 860:
$240 - Intel Xeon X3440 Lynnfield 2.53GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156

I'd go with the Ripjaws. Why do you list $170 as the price? (both g & OP) ... should be around $85 for a 4GB kit of ripjaws...
$105 - G.Skill Ripjaws Series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3-1600 F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL
... geez, weren't these $85 a few days ago?!? lol... still, not $170! :p

Thanks for the quick responses. I was between a few PSU's so I just brought my friend CMPSU-750TX(which was on my list) with the intention of using it for the new few upgrades. I'm hoping of getting 6 years out of it ::fingers crossed::.

In the future I do plan on using dual video cards. I might run them in crossfire but I believe the next major leap in virtualization is hardware localization (being able to assign a virtual machine to a physical device like a graphic card.). What advantages does the Xeon have over the normal i7 860 besides the price?

When I checked the Ripjaws they were $80 and I plan on getting two of them. Wow do prices jump.

Besides price and similar performance, not much other advantages over the i7 860.

That's a fine build you have there (with the changes Gwarren suggested). I was going to recommend 8GB if you wanted to run multiple VMs and 3D modeling.

I put the 8gb on there since the OP wanted it
Crucial 4GB(2 x 2GB) x2 !
or 170 G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB(2 x 2GB) x2 !

And I went with the 860 since he wants 4.0ghz out of the combo.

oic... yah, ram is in high demand, so prices fluctuate a lot.

no real advantage other than price. xeons are enterprise class, so it will supposedly last longer... supposedly.

The gigabyte is going to clock just as high as the gene, the only thing you gain is a $50 "reset" button. The gigabyte has a "power" button onboard.
