New 4870 Driver Problem

Just got a new HIS 4870 and downloaded the hotfix drivers for Vista. Everything seems to install correctly, but when Vista goes to load screen, I have no video signal.

I've tried updating .NET and DirectX. I've run the installer in Admin mode, I've turned off AV, I've used Driver cleaner.

Please help!!
 
My only guess is perhaps your LCD is not compatible with whatever mode the ATI drivers set by default... I had this issue with nVidia's drivers once where it set one of the display custom modes that was not compatible with my LCD, so I had to boot in safe mode and set something up there. Hope this gives you a lead... my 4870 with 8.6 hotfix drivers installed fine for me.
 
Did you try to see if it works in safe mode ? (I don't even know if Vista has safemode)

I would try that and see if you can uninstall everything, otherwise, no idea.
 
Safemode boots up fine, but I cannot uninstall from there, it gives me some sort of error that it cannot run the installer.

Very odd.

I'll try the display thing, not sure what to do, it's a Viewsonic 20.1 at 1680x1050 LCD.
 
With the nVidia issue it was "CVT Blanking Timer" that needed to be adjusted, hopefully with a little googling you'll find it. Also try switching the alternate DVI mode off in the Catalyst Control Center. :)

OK I'll look for that. I cannot even get CCC to load, so I cannot turn anything off or on.
 
Reinstall OS, that will fix it. Something Nvidia drivers did or left behind in Windows more than likely.

I was thinking that but didn't want to go that far with it. I was hoping he could find an easier way to fix it. that sucks if that's the only way.
 
Dont use safe mode, use VGA mode :)
Its one of the options where you select safe mode.

Once in windows set the res and refresh you want or uninstall the driver if you still cant set anything.

Won't go into that mode either.

Thinking I'm going to have to reinstall. Ugh.
 
Hey I notice you have an SLI board.
Try plugging the gfx card in the other PCI-E slot.
It should re-install the drivers when it gets into windows and might even give you a display while it does it.

I will try that when I get home.

I'm leaning to a reinstall only because of the bizarre behavior when I try to install the Catalyst drivers. It says they install fine, but when it tries to restart, it hangs for at least 2-3 minutes before restarting. Then I get the scroll bar, but just before the Windows logo comes up, I get a blank screen and the monitor says no signal.

So back into safe mode, where it will not let me uninstall the driver, or repair for that matter.

So I use Driver Sweeper from Guru3d to kill the driver and I can go back into Windows where it tells me that the driver is already loaded, but, at least I can uninstall from that point.

Is my PSU providing enough for this card? I know it's over the specs (barely), but it should be enough.

Make sure old Nvidia drivers are completely cleaned out. The uninstall doesnt remove everything unfortunately so weird driver errors occur when crossing companies without a clean driver sweep
 
Clean install of Vista SP1 and still no go.

Same situation, slow shut down after installing drivers and upon reboot no signal.

Going to try in wife's comp to see if any difference.
 
Try resetting the CMOS, it may be corrupt or have a changed setting you are unaware of.
Make note of anything you have changed first so you dont forget what to re-apply.
 
Why?

8800GTS installs perfectly, not a hitch.

It's either the 4870 or the PSU.

The cards arent the same so could be impacted by different settings.
A lot more goes on in the CMOS than the settings you get to see/change.
If part of the CMOS is corrupt, it can cause all manner of problems.

I'll try it tomorrow, too whipped to mess with it tonight anymore.

Tried re-setting CMOS, still nothing. Swapped PSU's, nothing. Installed and working on son's computer with XP installed. Going to install XP to see if that does the trick.

Otherwise, I'm totally at a loss.
 
Well, boils down to the monitor. It doesn't show up in the device manager when I hook up the 4870. Pop in the old nvidia card, and the monitor appears. Got an old CRT hooked up for now.

Any ideas how to get it to recognize the monitor?
 
This is a fresh install of Vista, any ideas how I can get CCC to recognize my LCD? This old CRT is fugly.
 
You can try and solve why your monitor isnt properly detected but the simplest way is to install your own inf for the LCD.
You may get away with using a generic LCD driver (inf file), but firstly try and find an inf for your display.

I have the inf for the monitor, however, there is no monitor present in the device manager. When I plug in the CRT it appears. When I pop in the nvidia card and the lcd it appears. But no joy with the 4870 and the lcd.
 
Right click your desktop, select Properties.
Goto the Settings tab and click Advanced.
Select the Monitor tab / Properties / Driver tab.
Click Update Driver and point it to your inf.

That should do it :)
 
Properties is greyed out.

@Buntz, yes tried that, installer cannot find monitor.
 
I should add that this is only happening when the 4870 is installed with this LCD. I am in safe mode as when it boots into windows, I get no signal to the monitor.
 
I did not read the whole thread , but did you try the monitor on a different computer to make sure the monitor or the cable is not the problem.
 
^^ agreed, I was about to post the same.
Try a different cable if it unplugs from the monitor.
 
Monitor works fine on two other computers, and works fine when I install a different video card.
 
After plugging in the wife's monitor, also an lcd, I opened CCC and set "Reduce DVI frequency on high resolution displays" and voila! when I plugged in my lcd, it detected it right away.

That has got to be the strangest most frustrating computer related thing I've had in a while.
