Why not use a mac mini ? you know that the g5's are old and no more support for new software and stuff?

Intel Mac Minis go for almost what I would pay to buy a brand new one with the edu discount. The G5 doesn't support 10.6 however all the clients I support are using 10.5 server with no plans to upgrade to 10.6 ($10,000 isn't worth a few extra features). I have a lot of experience doing Mac desktop support (all versions of OS X) but need some brushing up on my server work. I will also be using it to manage all my time machine backups.

I was going to buy a watch guard, but i really like the fact that Untangle, provides virus spy ware protection to the other machines in my house.

If I were going to buy a UTM device and use the original firmware I would have a Sonicwall NSA2400 with the enhanced OS, however that is way out of my budget. With pfSense running on that watchguard box I have been very happy. I am using untangle at work for a couple of clients (about 75 users) and it works very well, but personally I didn't see needing all the extras at home.

APC power solution is your best purchase :)

10.5 is awesome, i love it, im a mac person too. Id love to have a g5 x-serve HOWEVER they are loud LOL! and i don't have a dedicated room yet. Not until i get my house and basement, then i will be able to afford one. Id pretty much use it for the same as you, brushing up on some server stuff.

I did just get a free mac mini a G41.4 with 1 gig ram that i'm going to toy with for osx server 10.5.

I know untangle is not designed or needed for home, but i had a spare box and ITS NICE to have, I have a 2008 server that i rdp to / vpn to on the road, that i use for my billing tracking and files.

When i get a house ill have a few rack servers, very excited to learn new things. I could just virtual server it all, but that looks boring, i like all the pretty servers in a nice little rack.

Do you like your pfsense V2 box ?

Love it, took what was great about pfSense expanded the hardware compatibility, and tweaked it more for performance. On a 1.2Ghz P3 celeron and 256MB of RAM (whats in the box) it runs amazingly well. I can't wait for the RTM build.

They aren't special, just new...but with considerably better performance than the old 2800s and some fancy new modules.

The new SRE engines are pretty neat, the one in the picture above has the latest revision of Unity Express on it, but they can run a bunch of other stuff too--especially when you get into the 700 & 900 series models. I'm waiting on them to release the WLC code to run on those, supposedly going to happen in Q4'10.

For what it's worth, one of the ES3G-16-Ps turned out to be a dud. It works perfectly fine, but there is a problem with the hardware where the physical ports don't align with the logical port numberings in the configuration. AKA, you plug a cable into the port labeled "16" and Gi0/10 comes up, 15 maps to Gi0/9, 14 to Gi0/8, etc. Go figure :rolleyes:

The cool shit is the high end routers/switches, like ASRs (somewhat), Nexus and the CRS series. Or even 6500s/7600s and GSRs. Those are the :eek: devices, IMO.

I still <3 Lenny though.

agreed! even though what I am running it on is more than Overkill (2.8GHz P4, 1GB DDR fro only 2 PCs and 2 Servers

I will soon be running 3-4 servers, 3 wireless laptops a wired printer nintendo WII and some other goodies on my network.

I just won a cisco 24port switch on ebay for 1 penny, it will be here tomorrow. Also bought a wireless N 600mw access point and a new Norco case for my P4 3.2 Untangle box that is going to be rack mounted with 4 gigs ram and a 80gig sata laptop hard drive.

Soon ill have a mini rack and a few rack servers with my rack mounted switch. Ive been shopping on ebay :)

Will post pictures of all my new goodies this week.

haha- no idea why but that last photo made me laugh... like you tried plugging the usb cable into the hard drive then the ethernet cable then gave up :)

NO, i am having a baby in 5 months, so i was pushed into our small laundry room, it's good for now until we get a house :)

No Norco case didn't get a wash, but it's getting a paint job this weekend :) going to paint the face plate lime green.
 
How much did the norco case run ya? I've been lookin for a tiny case for an untangle server myself.

I love having both on my network but Shaw's Upload speeds, as well as all canadian providers here are shit anyway. till Telus and bell rock it..Shaw: 1-5mb...yet Comcast is 11mb?? Verizon is 50...Damn it we need FIOS here!!

Ahh yeah I have a ton of those cases. I built 26 computers with those cases for 1 client. And for my own office built like 8 or so. I actually use this case for a HTPC in my office since its in a rack. Good case I think for the money.
 
Does anyone have an ionic breeze around their home dc or network equipment? I have one in the same room as my equipment - but it hadn't ever occurred to me that that those things create some sort of static environment in which to attract debris (though maybe I'm way off on that). Does having those in the same room create more of a risk of static related damage?

I could buy a shaw business account but NOT!!! to expencive, i don't need much upload banwidth, yet. I told my self if i won the lottery id have a nice fiber to my house :) plus lots of rack servers to play with eheheheh

I plan on buying more to build more servers. a storage server, a media server for a wdlive box to stream tv shows to tv, and my business server.
