Coming next month. Initially through streaming disc and then through XMB. I assume they want to get this out asap. This will also be free to all PSN users. Personally, this removes any temptation in renewing my Gold sub, so that makes me wonder if Microsoft will continue to use it as a benefit for Silver users to upgrade when all PSN users get it for free. I don't think there will be any change.

This is great. Can't wait.

I have never tried Netflix but due to this news I'm now signing up for the free trial. Will be worth it for The Office seasons alone :)

Edit: aww, it'll be using a Blu Ray disc. Don't want to keep switching over and over between Netflix and my game. Oh well

It's not Sony's fault. It's most likely that Netflix wants this to work as quick as possible. They were probably surprised by the demand for the Slim and decided to release this on PS3, but due to not having enough time to work with Sony for an integrated solution, they made a hack job on a BR disc. It'll eventually come to XMB as it says in the first quote

it's called system update that you can get over the Internet.....do what ms did, get the basics down and then refine it........

PS2 had the slim version (yeah!!!!!!!)
PS3 also has a slim version
PSP has... never mind.

They use a CDN and I believe they use the same CDN as Microsoft. Also, depending what area or ISP you have, Sony's network traffic was being blocked or purposely slowed. Personally, my PS3 is faster than my 360.

WTF? Why is it that hard?

If it uses BD-Live... can any BluRay player do this? Not just the overpowered PS3? (I think of my xbox as an overpowered MC extender... lol).

Any BD player that is connected to the internet, on the Netflix site it states Samsung BD players are supported for streaming

You don't understand. It's not Sony's job to develop a Netflix streaming application. It's Netflix's job to do that. Once Netflix creates one they will submit it to Sony for approval, and when they approve it will be available from System Update
 
this is great, personally i think netflix will get more use on the ps3 than the 360. At least you dont have to pay a gold subscription then a netflix subscription, very nice for those that only use the ps3 as a media center, i am very interested in this for tv episodes and the odd movie that doesnt justify a bluray purchase. MS Exclusivity didnt last long but hopefully now MS will stop being greedy and make net flix available to silver account holders which they should have done in the first place, or they might get cocky......tricky for MS if you ask me. Piss those off that subscribed to gold just to get netflix or piss the silver account holders even more. I think the same scenario will happen with online gaming eventually!!

Dedicated servers like PC and many PS3 games are the most consistent.
I couldn't stand paying for p2p.

$8.99 a month for unlimited movie downloads sounds too cheap. Is that the basic option ?

It's the basic option if you want unlimited instant watch online. Otherwise, there's a $4.99 plan that allows you to watch 2hrs a month or something.
 
You can already stream Netflix to the PS3 via PlayOn. I've done it quite a bit. Disadvantage is that rewind and fast forward is dodgy.
 
This sounds great. I was thinking of getting an Xbox just for the streaming Netflix, but now I can just wait and get it through my PS3... :D
 
I use the ROKU Netflix Player and I've loved every minute of it, but if I can get Netflix on my PS3, then I'll move the ROKU player to my bedroom.

This rocks. Can't wait! :)
 
I like netflix streaming...

P.S. -- I'm blocked from those links at work, so can someone explain this 'disc' thing to me? Will the disc that Netflix is sending out just install software on your PS3 that lets you stream, or will you have to put the disc in every time you want to use Netflix streaming?

i think for now youll have to have the disc in untill the 360 exclusivity dashboard installed netflix expires. Basically i think netflix/sony have gotten round the ms exclusivity deal by having a disc only version, im not sure how long the ms deal is for but its bound to have pissed ms off

That would not have been cost effective since Netflix sells a streamer that plugs into any TV for $99 and it comes with a remote.

This seems like it could be a good possibility. While I don't look forward to the switching of discs, I wont complain too much. I imagine it wont be too long before this is built into the XMB natively.
 
Great news indeed. I much prefer the built in Netflix support on the 360 though. Something is better nothing.

Update: Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities noted that the Blu-ray disc required for Netflix playback on the PS3 may circumvent exclusivity clauses instituted by Microsoft. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix's ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii." Additionally, Pachter believes Netflix streaming will expand to Nintendo's console next year. "We anticipate that a similar arrangement will be announced for the Wii in the next 12 months."

I use Clearwire (see: slow) in Alaska (see: terrible infrastructure). With this connection I haven't not been able to play one single PC game without being booted from servers or having so much lag that its unplayable.

Playing PS3 games online has always been near perfect. Bad Company, UTIII, NFS: Shift----etc. All have been very enjoyable.


Its nice to see this Netflix feature finally coming to PS3. I'm not personally interested in it because I like Blu-ray too much. But----I'm sure many people will welcome the feature. Exclusives are bad for consumers/gamers.
 
This might make me want to finally put the money up for a PS3. I have my own HTPC setup with my 42" and my 360 in another room(which I dont watch netflix on). My netflix is run thru my HTPC because that is about the only thing I have. I dont have cable so I watch movies, burned movies netflix or on an occasion I will go straight to fox.com or abc.com to watch a TV show.
My step daughter recently bought a slim PS3 and watches her burned .avi's/dvd/BD's thru this and I thought it was a very nice setup. I didnt realize the PS3 could play the avi formats that I have made so I might be making the switch now. Been wanting to upgrade the HTPC for about a year now. Now I dont see much of a point. Probably the cheapest HD media center you can buy now. Cheaper than me making a new HTPC. I just wish it had more USB ports. I have 3 external drives right now.

Why not distribute the application via PSN download or firmware update, and then embed it into the XMB?

Again, the instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let PS3 enthusiasts get Netflix on the PS3. Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.

Is it possible to copy a Blu Ray disc to the PS3 HD? This could be a good way to bypass having to insert the disc each time to watch a film
 
I'm very happy about this. Hopefully it supports HD streaming (which I understand the xbox version does). It should also get many Sony-Pictures movies onto the streaming catalog, which will be nice even if you stream from a different box than the PS3.
 
I still haven't been able to find the answer to the following question anywhere :(.

Will I need to put the Disc in EVERY time I want to watch a movie via streaming, or does the Disc install software onto the PS3 and then is never needed again?

I'll keep using Roku Player in the meantime if its the first one.

With the PS3, you will have to put the disc in EACH time you watch a movie.

I do not know if its fact or just a good guess but they most likely are using the disc route to circumvent any agreements with Microsoft. It seems logical since I see no reason why it would be difficult to create a app for ps3. I am extremely happy with this since there really are no great alternatives for netflix on ps3 and hopefully this will support HD.

this is the part that sucks.....I could understand sending out a disk with the update to install (but even that is lame) but to have to put the disk in each time you want to use the application is just plain nuts.....

Yep. There is an interview with one of the Netflix representatives. You can assume that it is due to contract obligations. They stated to expect the XMB app late next year. Microsoft penned the deal with Netflix summer/fall 2008.

Doesn't bother me. I already get up to put in discs to watch movies anyway. I haven't gotten that lazy.
