Nehalem Previewed and Benchmarked

Unbelievable numbers there.

Seems like AMD's response will be much like 2006: Just hang a bag on the side of their old microarchitecture, apply tape, and hope for the best.

Those are some pretty crazy numbers. With that kind of performance, AMD will have a hard time competing even in the low-end. Intel can just launch a ~2 GHz dual or quad core version at a very low price, and it would still blow away AMDs current lineup and probably any future speed bumped Phenom as well. I hope AMD has a few more tricks up its sleeves, because with only one CPU company, prices would start to increase exponentially.

So I wonder what these will cost retail and what their release line-up will offer (2.66ghz - ??)

I wish we were able to see some OC'ing results. Who knows how fast Nehalem would be if it was bumped to 3.0+GHz from 2.66GHz.....though I imagine those would be some scary numbers.

Wow. I wonder how long it will take for lower models to drop to ~$200. I don't want to pay more than that for a CPU. Hopefully I can find reasonably priced boards and CPUs by next Spring

Gotta admit.. Intel does know how to make CPUs.

What could AMD possibly do? Absolutely nothing. Maybe they'll say that they got better server CPUs. Just maybe.

Just read the article.. WOW.. that thing is a Monster, and its on Early Silicon too..

I bet we will see solid 30-50% increases across the board!

I don't think prices will get to sane levels until a year from now, at the earliest. Probably next Fall/Winter.

This is definitely going to be a platform worth waiting for. That performance is pretty nice for having a crippled board.

I'd love to have the funds to upgrade more than one machine close to the time of release, but I don't see that happening.

I am looking forward to sharikou's Nehalem bashing post. He's completely lost it, even more than before. Nutty entertainment FTW.

They say that the 1366 nehalems won't be cheap until late next year.

Tomshardware said that the Nehalem they saw outclocked CPUs today.

The power consumption is pretty impressive too. At only stepping 2 too. If the launch of Nehalem is similar to that of Core 2, maybe we'll see an additional drop in power consumption.

The memory bandwidth was lower that what i expected for tri channel DDR3 though. DP bandwith should be insane! I can't want to see these go retail.

I expect late 2008 Parts to be "extreme" variants and pricing in the $1K range.. First Gen Motherboards will probably be in the $250-$400 range as well.

By Mid 2009, the $300 mainstream version (Probably @2.66ghz) will appear along with Affordable, $100-$200 motherboards.

If Intel stays true to form, we won't have the slightest idea of how hot these CPU's will be.

Geez, let's see how many nails AMD's coffin can take...
Or... how an IMC is done right.
It also nicely debunks the notion that HT only worked on Pentiums because the architecture was horribly inefficient and more efficient architectures won't be able to use it.
Intel has created a monster, again.
Tock indeed...
And all that with no competition. Let's hope nVidia's GT200 is just as good.

This cancels my plan on getting a Q6600 or Phenom 9550 this year. I'll just wait for Bloomfield

Remember this is early silicon and a crippled alpha-motherboard...and it still kicks ass...Impressive!
Wait for finished silicion and production class motherboards...I think "Nehalem" has even more preformance in the bag ;)

Great article!

I'll probably wait until 6-12 months after release to build a new system around Nehalem. I'm not one to be an early adopter and get screwed on prices.

Its certainly interesting to see Hyper Threading back in play. I really can't wait to see what AMD has to counter the Nehalem (if anything - conspiracy theory anyone? hah).

AMD is lucky if they can get 45 nm quadcores out by the time Nehalem is launched.
Which will probably make AMD about as competitive with Nehalem as they are with Penryn today... as in, not at all.
As far as I know, AMD isn't working on a competitor to HyperThreading either.

I think it's going to take AMD at least 1-2 years to even close the gap with Penryn... they shouldn't even think about taking on Nehalem, they simply have neither the technology nor the resources. They already shot themselves in the foot trying to compete with Core2 head-on with a rushed 65 nm process and a native quadcore design. They should just try to streamline their CPU design to be good price/performance, much like how they reinvented the Radeon 2x00-series as the 3x00-series. That's the only approach that is going to work.

AMD is going to go 6-Core / 8-Core.

A full working core should yeild higher performance than a Hyperthreaded one on multi-threaded apps.. A 6/8-core AMD should Pace with a 4-Core Intel, at least in the value and main-stream lines.

Its funny.. AMD is going to have to "Brute Force" it to make headway.. Or Beat Intel to the 32nm size, which i dont see happening.

It already looks incredible, too bad I won't be able to afford one for the next year or more. I imagine the Q9450 I plan to pick up in a couple months should hold me over till then.

Sadly for AMD, Intel already has a 6-core CPU in the works (Dunnington), and I believe Nehalem will also arrive with 8 cores/16 threads in an MCM package... So AMD won't be able to hold an advantage over Intel in terms of cores anyway.

Well looks like I'll put off that upgrade of my 4800 X2 for another 6-12 months.

As Scali said , Dunnington will be released in a few months.Single die , 6 cores , 3x3MB L2 and 16MB L3. ;)

Nehalem EX Beckton a single die , 45nm, 8 cores and 24MB L3 monster due out in Q3 2009.

24mb of L3.. Damn.. Its either going to be a Square foot or 2 inches thick.. :) *joke*

Very good early Nahalem info. Amazing is all I can say.
The memory bandwith and clock for clock efficiency is impressive.

virtualization software should be able to make good use of the extra threads Nahalem\Boomfireld will provide.

Awesome to see these kinds of gains on a very immature platform. Can't wait to see how they perform on a production ready board. With all the rumors of a "FSB" lock, i'm really interested to see some overclocking results.

I would say that the next 6 months will show us a full 50% increase in Computing and Graphical power across the board.. VERY Exciting stuff to say the least.. The "Beast" boxes some of us are running now will only be 1/2-2/3's the speed of new stuff here shortly..

You might be able to run Crysis as well! ;):p
