That... I have worked very hard to avoid learning for myself
haha... So I found this one by Asus that looks impressive. It's a PCIe card with quad antenna. I read the PCIe is more powerful. I still wonder if there is something enterprise strength out there that is stronger. I may play with this.. Just ran the wires in my attic for the AP's.. DUAL RUNS!... soaking wet with Sweat.. I am done for today. Next ill get the AP's mounted and the LAG fun begins as well as some needed cable management. I bought some rubber feet that are fairly tall to space the switches and router off the shelf in the closet for air flow. Got the extension cord ran to the battery backup to power the two front facing cameras so that the network and cameras will stay up if we lose power..... It's HOT in Texas...
Holy smokes! I got one AP out and mounted on teh cieling... EVERYTHING got faster.. my desktop is now 975mbps ... my outdoor cams never got much faster than 300ish... now 866 and 650 .. even the door bell is 650mbps lol. One more AP to get mounted and maybe ill beat 975..
Getting about 33mb/s transfer between my wifi PC and a wired PC.. I thought I had pulled faster in the past nearly 40. I feel there is something somewhere still dragging my transfer down. The transfer is much more stable now.. nice straight line that never really drops like before.
It's a monster, but it'll very likely get the job done!
I will play with it.. the Netgear A7000 appears to be the strongest USB out that I can find and its also a monster in size. I want that magical 1300mbps connection if at all possible. I will test the Asus version sometime next week and let yall know how it compares!
Ok, bought the Asus AC88 pcie wireless adapter... says it can connect up to 2100mbps.... maybe I can hit the 1300mbps I am aiming for.. either way.. I had another PC that needs my USB adapter anyways.
Holy smokes... 1.1gbps (1.17gbps reported in unify software!!!)... the crazy thing.. im hitting 65mbps transfer speeds!!!! something has to be wrong with that other adapter to only be getting 33mb/s transfers.. this thing is FAST now. I know going from 975 to 1.1 could not have made double the speed difference. Maybe a driver issue.. not sure.
Only problem is I still cannot copy to my share.. I can copy down no problems!
Here is how it looks.... now to start working on the LAG setup.. I need to figure out the switch side of things now.
Switch gets dang warm but the fan never kicks on.. FYI the edgeswitch lite although advertises fanless operation does have a fan. It's loud on boot up but shuts off. I got some rubber feet that are 1/2" tall to space it off the wood shelf everything is on.. Should help the heat. So far so good.. still one more AP to go.. but holy smokes this setup is FAST and antenna strength is super stable.
And now with the other AP mounted in place!!! 1.3gbps connection!!! Woohoo... full speed
EDIT... saw it bounce to 1.5gpbs and then back to 1.3gbps... I guess this AP can do 1.73gbps??? I just transferred a file at 76mb/s and the last few seconds spiked to 85mb/s !!! I am probably close to the mechanical drives potential..
EDIT EDIT.... fixed my network issue by mapping through IP instead of name.. copied up a file at 110mb/s LMAO.. ok.. this network rocks..
Well my switch is going back to the store... thermal errors and found to be defective.. thinking of just getting hte unfi version to keep it under same software. I read it does the same LAG setup I need and is probably plenty strong..
I realize no one is probably reading these anymore but .... switched to the 8 port POE unifi and setup was much easier.. not only that I got LAG setup so each AP is using the pair of 1gb connections. Very cool.
I'm just catching up, but glad that the smaller switch worked out!
[24 ports was always a stretch, and only because the 16 port versions cost just as much...]
Thank's! Everything is running great. Just got the SFP working.. the wizard doesn't setup ALL the ports on "Switch 0" to include the SFP. You have to go into swtich 0 then Vlan and just check the box for SFP 5 and it's all working now with the Router feeding my Switch over SFP and fiber. Battery backup is in place. This POE switch gets HOT HOT... so I have a little fan coming that will blow across the gear very soon and also got some tall rubber feet to allow for air flow. Right now it shows 126 min estimated time to run this equipment off my battery backup. This includes two front cameras on the house. I will add one more for outback on the battery backup and the whole setup is DONE.
Only complaint is how sweet the USG is for seeing internet traffic etc.. I read it's limited and weak compared to the Edgerouter X and Lite so I will stick with what I have. I have hopes that they release a better unifi router so I can use the unifi manager for all devices. I also still need to buy the unifi cloud key..
An interesting video about link aggregation.. (LAG)
This went from "need some help..." to "let me tell you guys how it is" real quick
Stages of learning, right?
Exactly. Welcome to the dark side Copyright
LOL thx.. I have an IT background but networking has always been really weak for me.. I really enjoyed this project and would not have gotten this far without the help from the forum.
What I hate about the Edge is not being able to see it in the manager... but then I found this... has anyone played with UNMS?
Looks like it's runs on linux.... wish there was a windows version.. or setup some pi device to run it.
Running right now alongside Unifi on a Ubuntu 16.04 install. Works great, so long as you don't go installing beta firmware (and then mostly still works if you do).
UBNT has 'unifying' Unifi and UNMS on their to-do list- it isn't there yet. But the interface is similar, and UNMS can do most of what Edgemax can do, some of it even easier.
Does it track the internet traffick like you find with the USG in the Unifi Manager? I just installed it on my phone along with the unifi software.. this is going to take some time to learn.. lol
I actually prefer the 'statistics' page to the Edgemax one, but that's really only because it's prettier. Same with the DHCP assigments, which helps to quickly identify what's connected and then get it a reserved address.
Final little touch is the fan that finally came in after amazon prime lost two of my orders. The little fan made a world of difference. The POE swtich was getting pretty dang hot but is now just warm to the touch with this little fan on it.
I'll get my 'rack' racked up in the next week or two.
I was looking at racks when I had the 24 port but at this point this little setup in top of the hallway closet is perfect as it sits. Been digging around to see if QOS over an AP is a possibility.. give one connection (my desktop) priority over all others would be nice.
It is! I have a 48-porter, and rack ears for that as well as for the ER-4 and my HP 10Gbase-T switch, so I figure I'll find somethng small to 'contain' it all, while picking up some shorter patch cables to neatify it a bit, and perhaps some quiet ventilation. This will also live in my office with me most of the time, so it needs to be both presentable and a good roomate .
Typically, this would be done with a separate VLAN, subnet, and SSID with routing set up between. It's on my list of things to accomplish, but there are certainly guides that can help on the UBNT forums!
[one area of concern: be sure of where inter-VLAN/subnet routing occurs; one thing you want to avoid is having that traffic, i.e. between your desktop and other devices on your network, being sent trough router, as this will impart significant bandwidth limitations]
Getting complicated.. lol..
I'm reading the USG PRO-4 can do 1gb internet. Tempting.. I wonder if its as good as the edgerouter X.. I really just want the SFP option and 1gb internet ability and to be able to use the unifi controller.. Probably asking for too much.. I heard there may be a USG HD in the works that can handle the 1gb internet speeds. If that has an SFP that would be the product id be after.
I would asume the new usg would be based on the same hardware was the EdgeRouter 4. I have er4 and I can get 1gbs with it.
Just not with anything more than the ER-X can turn on without limiting throughput below 1Gbps. The USG4 is also old hardware, unfortunately; I cannot recommend any of the Unifi routers if the 'pane of glass' feature isn't a real want/need.
There is unfortunately no such thing. The 'new' USG is the USG-XG, and it's US$2500 . It also does stuff almost no one needs at home, and it might do 1Gbps with its built-in IPS function. Also really have no idea what their IPS does relative to say Sophos, or even pfSense.
[also, I really wish there was such a thing- they could make bank marketing a router that could do 1Gbps symmetrical with all filtering and queuing in play]
Bummer.... guess we can just wait and see what is coming. I will keep waiting for now..
