I have been sitting on my 3500+ for a long time now and finally jumped on some crucial 6200 CL4 ram. they are supposed to be some sort of micron, i have them on hand if some can tell me where to look.

I stopped researching overclocking because that would cause me to buy new stuff. But now is the time to upgrade for me. I dont know what chip or mobo to go with. I want to hit atleast 3ghz. I was thinking the e4300 and the gigabyte rev 3.3 with my 800 mhz ram at 400 * 8 would be awesome. Though i am worried i will get a bad chip I always seem to get a bad chip. Everysince my asus a7n 8x deluxe i have never got great overclocks and i am some what skeptical about the validity of alot of numbers. Anyways

I wanna spend the least amount of money as possible and have a very high chance of getting 3ghz or higher what should i do?

That will do it, budget for an artic freezer 7 pro ($40 ish) and a 40 or 50mm fan for the MCH/northbridge and a tube of AS5 thermal grease.

Do a little board prep, mainly redo the MCH/northbridge thermal paste and mounting hardware and you are good to go.

Intel price drop incoming on about the 22nd, so wait a bit before deciding on the processor. And you might want to look at what is basiclly the newest version of that board the P35-DS3R you get raid and a newer chipset for just a little more, all depends on your budget, the p965 DS3 is still a great OCer and the price should be coming down.

I was actually thinking of one of the big tower coolers? http://www.anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/showdoc.aspx?i=3032&p=5

Such as the thermalright 120 ultra maybe extreme one? Or the tunic tower http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/shop/product.php?productid=16479 . Or even this monsoon II Light? I was going to go all out on the cooling as that is what will really help me push the processor?

Also is there better stores to buy processors that will overclock better? Or is it totally just luck? Any places try to specifically sell that best batch?

yeah i am waiting for the price drop the day after HP comes out. And really looking for a good deal on a mobo is that newer p35 board better than the p965?

My son's A64 mobo just died and I was thinking of getting him an E4300 and shoot for 3.2GHz like the OP and keeping my E6400 @ 3.2GHz, or buying me a Q6600 G0 stepping after the July 22 price drop. The problem with the latter option is that it likely won't be until mid-Aug until I can get a guaranteed G0 stepping, by which time my son will have gone into cardiac arresnt and a coma waiting for his computer to be rebuilt.:p

If I go the E43000 route, which is currently $117 at the Egg, then if I wait until the Q6600 drops by that much in say six months time and then purchase, I haven't lost any money and my son gets his computer back ASAP. I don't get to use some quadage lovin' for six months, but since I don't do the video/music edit thing I don't think I lose (not loose!) much by doing so. Does this line of reasoning make sense?

BTW, I don't think the E4300 will drop by much, if at all, after July 22nd. The E4400 is only coming down $20.and the E4300 has dropped off the lineup (well, the list I have seen on the web).

It may not drop but its worth the 9 days to wait and find out. Also maybe it would be better to go with teh 4400. What would be the best bet after the price drops you think? http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/itnews.php?tid=789466

Maybe the 4400 but is it as good as a ocer as the 4300? Prob has 10x multi? Potential 4ghz lol j/k

The good thing about the E4300 is that RAM speed is right on 400MHZ at its OC sweet spot of 3.2GHz, making for a very good system balance. The E4400 costs a little more and would need to hit 3.6GHz to do the same.

yeah that indeed is a sweet spot but the problem is getting it to run that fast. Thats a near 100% overclock i dunno but its hard to believe that every chip will do that. If it does then i am ready to buy screw the price drops lol...

and nerd what mobo you running?

I reckon the E4300 is an E6400 in disguise anyway (minus VT), and for the E6400 it is only a 50% overclock to get to 3.2GHz. In any case, I'm going to give it a shot.

My current mobo is a Gigabyte DS3 (V1.0 I suppose, given that I bought it around Oct last year) and I am so happy with it I was going to get the same again (later rev of course). My CPU will actually do up to 3.6GHz stable in this mobo, ie. 450MHz bus, but the CPU temp creeps towards 65-70C.

BTW, I'm using the Artic Cooler Freezer Pro 7, which is a pain in my azzholes to install, but does a quiet and great job of keeping things cool (well, at least when I am not OCing to the moon :p ) Running FSX, which gives both cores a good flogging, I get CPU temps of about 45C in a room at 26C ambient ('tis hot here at the moment in the Mojave Desert!)

My bad on this. Turns out the E4300 has a 9x mult which makes the 400MHz memory point at 3.6HGz not 3.2GHz The E4300 therefore is more like an E6600 minus VT with the bus speed pulled back.

you still can lower the multiplier right?

As far as I am aware, yes. I've never had the urge to try with my E6400 because if anything I need to go one mult up, not down, to get me down from 450 to 400 bus at 3.6GHz.

Yes, 3.2GHz at 400x8 will be the shiz if it works out. Just ordered the E4300 now from the Egg.

This should be easily achievable. Mine's running at 3,0 GHZ atm (333 x 9 with Vcore ti 1.35V) and it's stable and very cool. I'll try getting it a little higher sunday night, I'd be very happy with 3,2 GHZ.

Looking forward to it then :D

so does everyone agree the e4300 is the "best bang for the buck?", i am talking after July 22 price cuts too.

I can get a e6400 for 130 used that was OCed pretty well? good deal considering July 22 price cuts.

I have an e6420 with 4mb cache instead of the 2mb cache on the e6400. Given that otherwise they are the same CPU, why would anyone want to buy the e6400?

I can hit 3200mhz at 1.35v, 3400mhz at 1.425v and 3500mhz at 1.475v on my ASUS P5K Deluxe. I've just started playing with it today and am very happy so far.

The P5K is a great board BTW.

because of the price how much was your 6420 more than 130 prob? also this comes with a nice hsf

retail e6400 and e6420 are the same price, come with the same hsf, warranty, etc.

Right now the e6400 and e6420 retail versions are $186.00 at Newegg. They are the same price. After the July 22nd price cuts, even cheaper I suppose.

I wouldn't knock you for buying the used e6300. I just wondered why no one had mentioned the e6420 with double that cache for the same price new.

yeah idunno what i am going to do its a 6400 though 6300 was a typo... i dont like buying used but if it was taken care of and had no problems the $100 off (because it comes wtih a big typhoon) though everything is used hmmm i think i may wait till price drops even used should be less

I'm at 3.375 at 1.36 volts. I didn't really try anything just threw 1500 fsb and 9x multiplier up there.

Er... you can get an e6400 + Big Typhoon for $130? That sounds okay to me.

Sorry it took so long to reply, but the board I am using is an Asus P5N-E SLI, which is 650i SLI. It does the job really well. I got it for almost half the price of a 680i SLI LT, and so far I have yet to see why I'd pay 120$ CDN more for the 680i.

I am very pleased by the board and the CPU. Got each for 150$ CDN and it's running quick, stable, and cheap :D What you want more?

PS: HardOCP has a review of this motherboard, which is why I bought the board in the first place.

Gonna try to OC the CPU a little over in a couple hours when I get back home.

I was eyeballing the XFX 650i that Ncix is selling for $99 cdn.

Might score one of those, and a pricedropped C2D next week.

yeah im getting excited i have had this freakin 3500+ no dual core and it takes a toll when trying to mutlitask im pretty excited to get some more power. Still dont know which board or cpu to get ... how big of a deal is the loss of VT?

If you're running VMWare, there's some benefit apparently to VT.

I have a E4300 on a p5b-Plus running at 320fsb (2.88ghz) and this thing is flying. I use it for folding@home and it is fast. It has a 1.08ghz overclock and never sees over 55*c. :D

Don't get a Junkabyte. Get an Abit IP35. New chipset and great board from what a lot of users are saying.

really ... i love abit and would much rather get that how is the NB cooling? People are doing really well with the gigabyte though.

whats the difference in SB Intel ICH9R and the other is Intel ICH9 i think one has firewire and raid and the other doesnt is the only difference i can see

ok so VT is no big deal lets talk cache? 2MB vs 4MB ??? Whats the diff at same clock speed

I was about to buy it but I can't justify a board that much. If you look around the for sale threads there was someone selling a PRO for 150. That I was so tempted to do.

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1205829&highlight=ip35

Ask him if he would do 150 shipped. If you want.

It's a newer chipset. It's a million times better company. It's much nicer looking and it's also one of the most efficient boards on this chipset. If you're looking to OC this is one beauty of a board.

The Pro is copper cooling and I believe the regular one might be copper as well. Should be fine since it is a tad on the efficient side.

Im sorry i dont understand why i would want the pro over the regular? I dont need raid or Firewire

You dont, just mentioning that that guy had it for a great price. abit more and it also has heatpipes.

Got my E4300 on Monday. Didn't quite make it to 3.2GHz, but 3.0GHz at 375x8 on stock voltage has passed the 4hour Orthos test, so I'm pretty happy. :D

There is a review for the eVGA 650i ULTRA on HardOCP.

All in all it's a very solid board. It does not have SLI though.

I dont want or need SLI honestly i dont play games much anymore ...only bf2 maybe quake wars when it comes out. I think i will go wit hthe 650i ... it does support the new 45nm intels coming out down the road right?
