Need a recommendation....

I've been out of the game for a while. I am currently using a HP envy 700-430qe series machine with an i7 4770.

Looking for a card recommendation to play BF1 at medium or higher graphics settings on a 1080p monitor. Something best bang for the buck and if it's a previous generation card, that's fine too!

More than happy to upgrade the PSU to accomodate a decent card. Have at it!

Feel free to contact me if you have something that would fit the bill. Thanks for the help!

Just to help out, the system has:
  • One PCI Express x16 (Gen 3.0)
  • Three PCI Express x1 (Gen 2.0)
  • One PCI Express half-length mini card socket
For expansion options....

What PSU do you have? A 1070 GTX will play BF1 on high @ 1080P easily.

What card do you currently have?

I just got a 1060 3GB for $200 and it's impressive on my 1440k.
It's just hard to beat the value and performance for an Nvidia card.

How often do you upgrade?

Back in the day, every couple of months. Now with a family and young kids- probably never. I'm just trying to get back into some gaming...

PSU- I don't mind upgrading this as necessary, I think there's just a 430W in there now.

I just have the built in mobo graphics. Intel HD 4600 GT2

I'm guessing it's an HP branded PSU that came with the system? You'll need a new PSU then for sure. Do you know if that system uses standard ATX power connections? I assume it does, but better make sure before you try to replace the PSU.

Yes, it uses standard connections. There is an Antec Earthwatts 430 PSU in there now.

I went with 1060 6gb mini - 400W psu required so you should be good on that. The 3gb 1060 is gimped ~10% (1 SM and 8 TMU's disabled vs 6gb card), so I would stay away from that . Rx480 8gb is also a good card and neck and neck with the 1060 and can often be found cheaper. Stay with the 1060 if you have any desire to try VR, though.

Either a smaller gtx1060 or a used gtx970. A used gtx970 is probably the best bang for the buck now, but it needs a 500w psu.

If it's not overclocked I doubt it would need more than a good 400W PSU. The 500W requirement is for dodgy PSUs. I agree that a 470 is best bang for the buck unless you're at all interested in VR.

1070 is overkill for 1080p IMO and costs twice as much as a 1060. 1060 is the ez obvious choice here.

You can't max every game with a 1060. Some games you'll have to play on high.

You can also use DSR on games you have extra FPS to burn which really helps 1080p.

So not a complete waste but you likely are getting into diminishing returns a bit.

Yeah I've never used DSR, don't know why, just haven't. Generally though I prefer my gpu to run at less than 99%, it'll run cooler and you'll get more consisent framerates.

I have a 1070 in my laptop and hell, it'll run BF1 on ultra @100fps (most of the time) which is beneficial b/c the display will do 100Hz. For a 60 Hz monitor (kind of assuming that's what the op has based on the PC) I just don't see the justification for the extra $200, and the OP stated best bang for the buck.

Oh yeah... The OP... You're right. 1060 would definitely fit that bill.

Best bang for the buck is a 1060 6GB on sale (I got one for $220AR). You're looking at at around a $150 jump for cheap-ish 1070. I've seen 970's go for $150 or so used in the forums and that's also a great bang for the buck card at that price.

I haven't really looked into the RX480's though too hard. From what I've seen it depends on the game/application as to whether team red has an advantage (or not). 1060 will definitely run cooler.

Wow I didn't know 970's can be had for THAT cheap. Definitely the best bang for your buck would be that. I personally messed with AMD cards from around 4890 to 290x but that's the last time they were relevant to me. No idea about their stuff after.

If buying used, then a 970 is really the best bang for buck - nearly 1060 performance for half or 2/3 of the price.
