The National Pork Board isn’t too happy with ThinkGeek’s canned unicorn meat. It seems that using the phrase “the other white meat” in conjunction with fake ads for canned unicorn meat was enough to get the lawyers fired up enough to send cease and desist letters.

Parody is protected by the first Amendment. Sleazy lawyers harassing people with stupid cease and desist orders should be crime.

This. Maybe they thought they could stop it since it's an item being sold.

Ha ha ha! ThinkGeek is full of win:
The cease & desist letter is ludicrous. The Pork Board is up in arms because other websites referred to it as "The Other White Meat". ThinkGeek did not use those words.

This is clearly a case of too many corporate litigation lawyers otherwise sitting with their thumbs up their asses.

From what the first page of their C&D letter I believe they are concerned of other sites (they mention a facebook one) using the trademarked "the other white meat". The claim is the canned unicorn meat as "the new white meat" cuts awfully close to their trademark.

Sure.. probably a boring legal afternoon but if you don't defend your trademark you lose it.

Chalk it up to internet hilarity...

I wonder what they would do if the Chicken Farmers of Canada started marketing "The Original White Meat".

Technically, you couldn't even buy it from the site. It was one of several clever but fake items added last April Fool's day.

    Too funny!

All I can say are the Food Laws from what I've seen/read are a PITA, ask Oprah.

However its not Unicorn meat you need to watch out for, its Magical Unicorn Mayonnaise. (which I used to make these sandwiches)

Props to ThinkGeek for using their C&D response for marketing. They took pork lemons and made some capitalist lemonade. DeLICIOUSly savvy. Everyone wins here. People aren't going to stop eating pork because these lawyers were silly dicks - bacon is too good. And ThinkGeek gets some free press.

Isn't something like this covered by 'Fair Use'? It was a joke. If I wanted to take the pork slogan as my adult film star name, could I be sued for trying to sell my laughable DVD's?

    To Whom It May Concern:

It has come to our attention that paid subscribers of your forum are implying that our product contains brain-eating parasites.

It is not the purpose of this letter to refute evidence of grey matter porousness due to insufficient preparation. We require that you cease and desist in supporting-- THEY'RE IN MY HEAD! THEY'RE IN MY HEAD!

Bacon is good. Where are my pants?

No, no ,no, you misunderstand. THINKGEEK actually SELLS a can labelled 'Unicorn Meat'. for $9.99 http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/unicorn-meat.shtml

and the National Pork Board gets NO money from ThinkGeek's using their registered trademark.

But trademark infringement is theft. Clean and simple. It's smash and grab. It ain't no different than smashing a window at Tiffany's and grabbing [merchandise]. ;-)

No, no, no, you misunderstand. ThinkGeek *DOESN'T* actually sell a can labelled "Unicorn Meat". Try clicking on "Buy Now" on your link and you'll see why everybody is laughing at the pork people for being retarded.

Lawyers are not PWNed. They probably were paid handsomely by the National Pork Board.

PWNage of Farmers Union is what this is.
