For that matter, I'd rather show empathy and kindness to laid off employees instead of finding excuses to demonize them, especially when those excuses are built on broad assumptions rather than evidence.
People get laid off all the time. Why should I feel sorry for these particular people? Especially with videos from companies like this and LinkedIn where the person is lavishing in free food and free time instead of actually working.

Oh, you don't have to feel especially sorry for them (these are frequently well-off Bay Area residents, after all), just understand that it's still an unfortunate moment and that they're not necessarily deserving of what happened. They often have families to support.

And simply speaking, life's too short to waste energy finding excuses to hate people. There are enough actual injustices in this world to focus on; attacking laid off Twitter employees (or Meta, or...) won't accomplish anything.

It was vital to cut these employees off immediately because it has already been shown that many of these entitled liberal employees are happy to sabotage things on their way out, etc. Most of these jobs were probably related to content moderation, aka censoring content that didn't align with their liberal bias. The people who decided to ban Trump while allowing hate-filled posts from the Iranian government, etc, were the problem, and I'm glad to see them get fired.

How shitty is your life that you find joy in people getting laid off? Don’t you people have better things to be happy about than your countrymen losing their jobs?

From what little I have read on Twitter, having never wasted much energy on it, I sure saw a lot of people finding excuses to hate. Seemed to me like the entire site ran on hate. But I guess that was ok if you were hating on people who Twitter employees agreed should be hated.

I do feel sorry for anyone who gets laid off. Where was that sympathy from the Twitter crowd during the pandemic shutdowns? This situation is just ironic. Some will point that out. Doesn't mean they're thrilled about it, at least I'm not.

I would expect the smarter ones would have saw the tea leaves and would have left already grabbing another job before hundreds start applying for the same job. Now will we get some inside scoop now on what Twitter actually was doing with their numbers of users, how many bots, algorithms that target etc.?

More interested in what changes this will bring to the platform, if you can layoff over half of the employees and still run does indicate one overstaffed inefficient operation which one could presume when made more efficient will become way more profitable. Layoffs suck, been there a couple of times, especially when unexpected and out of the blue but ended up with better jobs in the end.

The whole tech sector is laying off thousands of workers. Covid brought a tech boom investors saw growth in double digits, now that they can’t maintain those numbers they are all downsizing and taking massive stock hits.
Just another day in the life of the simulation.

It is an unfortunate thing about our society is that we tend to sensationalize strife, hatred, "bad things", and while yes groups tend to point out bad things about "the other group" more so than good things about their group it goes well beyond those lines. Hell just look at the local news, not CNN, Fox, or any of the "polarizing" ones and you will typically see many more stories about bad things happening than good things that happened. Bottom line all that stuff gets more clicks, views, ratings and the producers of content know that that's why we see it more often.

I wonder how companies like Door Dash and other "we'll pick up your food for you because you're too damn lazy/scared to go to a store" are doing. Granted the vast majority of their employees are the "gig workers" ahem I mean "contractors" so they're really not laying people off as much as they're not having as many jobs for them to pick up, but still they have to have those office jobs too where people like me wonder what the hell they even do.

So far peoples covid eating habits haven't gone anywhere, but food delivery companies are quickly changing up to errand companies.
Not just delivering food, but picking up dry cleaning, groceries, booze; sort of public errand boys for hire.
But they weren't profitable during the pandemic, and they certainly will struggle to be now, looking at it their stock prices are also tanking as their public relevance is quickly fading.

Pointing out that Musk can fire people because they were for-hire government propagandists isn't off-topic, since it seems he no longer intends on supporting as much propaganda.

That seems kind of central to the issue. People threw their lot into back Ukraine before finding out they were actual Nazi white supremacists committing genocide because blue checkmarks told them that Ukraine was the side to back, and Russia always badman.

As it turns out, the information presented on Twitter was not entirely correct.

Where do you get this shit, lmao

There are two sides of the same coin that is the left in the USA - Corporatism and Socialism, which both go hand-in-hand with one another, and play off of one another, but make no mistake that they are one in the same.
When Twitter was under Jack Dorsey's leadership, it was Corporatism at its fullest, and a leftist propaganda machine like no other.

Elon Musk just leveled the playing field, and I might add has not changed a single policy on Twitter, yet look at how the left is portraying everything.
When the left gets that angry about something, perhaps there is a bit of truth in what Elon Musk has brought to light.

The leftist cult in the USA, assuming that is where you are from, does not care about you in the least, and will eventually eat you.
Time to take the red pill and wake up...

EDIT: Ah, looks like you are from the UK, hope you enjoy the new Britcoin CBDC, coming soon to a bank account near you!
What you're saying is complete nonsense, Corporatism and socialism are fundamentally at odds concepts. Socialism implies workers owning the means of production, there would be no musk or jack dorsey controlling all of twitter. I'm not sure what "leftists" means to you, but to me it means people who advocate for things like green energy and universal healthcare coverage in the US. It might be something differently in Europe because their overton window is different than the US (their center is further to the left). Not sure how right wingers are helping people, seems to me to the supreme court is only further stripping people of their rights. Musk hasn't "leveled" the playing field he's just an ego maniac, and he is censoring "comedy" by banning parody accounts making fun of him. This is all culture war nonsense anyway, I don't really give a damn about any of it. The $8 a month for a blue check is absolutely hysterical though, I'm really enjoying watching twitter become even more garbage than it already was.

Well now that the fed intends to kill off the gig economy with the Labor Department's new rule on how independent contractors are defined, I see companies like Door Dash and Uber going under in the near future.

You've got to read more about the history. It is a LOT more complicated than what you've been told by western legacy media. I'm checking out of this thread now but look into a man named Stepan Bandera and his legacy in Ukraine. Then read about the Maidan Revolution and the Azov Regiment. Look at their insignia ffs.

In high school, in history class. History of the USSR.

That is how insidious Twitter is. It literally played a part in erasing history, and people think Elon Musk is a danger to democracy.

The reason people are mad about the Musk takeover is because they're being told they might lose their truthiness infrastructure. There's no such thing as a truthiness infrastructure, it's just propaganda.

I don't know if Musk will make Twitter a better thing. I hope he does.

The part that you are missing is that Socialism doesn't exist outside of fantasy and theory. It is nothing but a control mechanism with an end stage of authoritarianism (see Russia, China, North Korea, etc). It is no surprise to me that nearly every one of these mega corporations have heavy left wing leadership.

An individual is allowed to succeed in even an incompetent right wing government. An individual is only allowed to succeed with permission of a Left wing government. See the problem?

lol, you act like we are talking about a lawnmower company or something, and not an army of workers that was literally working all day long to censor free speech.

Actually, forms of socialism exist all over the world, but they're not full socialist countries, publicly owned services like the NHS in Britain are an example of socialism running along side a capitalist economy. We do plenty of socialist like things in the US, but just not to the same extent as Europe or nordic countries. Full libertarian capitalist countries flat out don't exist and never have, because they can't, a state is required to have a civilized society. Russia is a capitalist country now, if you're referring to the USSR maybe? I think you're conflating an economic model with authoritarianism.

Reading is only part of it. How many of these pro Ukraine Americans have been to Crimea or Donetsk? How many have even spoken to someone from there? Very simply Americans need to travel more. People here tend to think interstate movement is traveling. It is not. We as a country need to go to other places and experience other cultures and see things we simply aren't used to seeing. Spend a few nights eating and drinking with people you consider the enemy and you might begin to see things differently.

You are proving my point and then drifting into a strawman argument. Not sure why you are even bringing up capitalist or economic models, although Singapore is probably the best example of wealth by right wing governance.

Yeah I chat with some family in Ukraine once a in while. They are close to the border with Russia. I've been there a few times, but last time was like 14 years ago. I haven't heard them speak about any anti-semitism (my family has some jewish blood, not sure how much) But I believe the Nazi thing is more restricted to a minority in one of the military branches? Also we grew up speaking Russian, and this strange argument that russian-speaking people in ukraine were being persecuted just doesn't connect with what I've heard or experienced (my family there speaks mostly russian day to day, although that might change now....)

I have heard 2 stories from my Aunt and Mom about people that disrespected them 35+ years ago for speaking Russian. But even If i take those as true, it still seems a far-cry from a day to day thing.

Sorry for jumping on this off-topic, that's the last i will say of it.

Sounds like you don't know what the right to free speech is. The right to free speech only guarantees that the government will not restrict what you have to say.

But hurr durr "town square" .. yeah, Twitter is under no obligation to host everything that every moron wants to post. There are plenty of other social media sites that will do just that, and all of them are failing because it turns out that's not what users want.

Wow, lots of assertions made without meaningful evidence and plenty of hyper-partisan spin.

Simply asserting that Musk is firing "government propagandists" doesn't make it true. And I'm sorry, but Ukraine was invaded in an unprovoked action by a nationalist dictator whose army has committed numerous well-documented war crimes. Even if we take your Ukraine allegations at face value, the clear majority of Ukraine and its military is above-board; I'm going to side with them, not the invading dictator.

The United States government was directing Twitter to suppress specific topics and promote other topics. That makes it a a First Amendment issue. Twitter also suppressed Ukrainian war crimes -- even while being documented by the UN Human Rights investigators -- and suppressed any discussion of Ukraine's violations of the Minsk Agreements, essentially starting the war against Russia.

In the Soapbox we can discuss how Ukraine started this, and maybe on Twitter going forward.

I'm trying to keep this Twitter-centric, so if anyone wants to talk about Ukraine, please, get a GenMay sub.

If any of these subjects strikes anyone as absurd or off the wall, though, know that the US has been, and is, directing social media outlets, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even Wikipedia, to suppress free speech.

Elon Musk appears to be firing back by firing the people "just following orders." We can only hope that's the case.

You are mixing up the US constitution's right to free speech that only applies to the government with the philosophy of the free speech and the implications of blocking it.

Also note that the US government directing non-government entities to censor free speech is at the forefront here due to twitter and facebook censoring the hunter biden laptop story before the 2020 election because the US government told them to. This seems unconstitutional to me.

That would be true except for the fact we have it on record that both Twiiter and FB were doing the government's bidding when it came to suppressing some topics vs others.

Haven't been there, but I have been to Kyiv and spoken to people from there. Turns out they don't like it when their capital city is bombed, citizens tortured and women raped.
Really venturing into genmay territory but .... I guess they shouldn't have started it then. Karma can be rough.

What the fuck

Twitter intervened, on behalf of the US government (and probably others, too) to suppress tweets with content along the lines of "Ukraine violated the terms of the Minsk Agreements and attacked Russia," "Hunter Biden's laptop is real and the implications are terrifying," and "Conventional medicines are effective at the coronavirus." <-- I'm not discussing these, I'm using them as examples of suppressed speech by Twitter.*

Apparently, Elon Musk just fired the people who were running interference. Some people are happy. Some people are upset. I ... I don't know how or why this bothers people, but different strokes.

*Come to GenMay! We've been arguing about this bullshit for years! It's fun and educational! And you don't have to pay $8/month!
