So there is a chance in the next two months that I will be moving into a new position at work and that will require me to relocate to SD/NE/IA tri-state area... and I came to the realization that I'd have to move 12 computers! Have any of you moved and how did your farm do and how did you protect them?

Thanks in Advance!

Unfortunately I'll have at least a couple of days of down time if this occurs.

See, you better be glad you kept them in cases ... well i hope you did.

I don't think they will be hurt during the move.
I would try and find some thick foam and tape it to the back of the systems.
That way no debris can get into the ports and will protect them.
Front of cases should be fine.

2nd option is too find a S**T load of bubble wrap!!!!!

So they build a new power plant out there for you? You relocating so you can thaw them out this winter?

What about placing carboard (a flattened box specifically) between the cases, in lieu of bubble wrap, and make a larger bundle of 2-4 cases? Poor man's pallet of sorts.

Just rent a van and pack all the computers in the van yourself. Like that, it will be safe.

If I understand states acronyms, it's South Dakota, Nevada and Idaho ?

South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa? God knows what's out ther beside Sioux Falls and cattle.... and soon, Sunin+his generator.

Edit: Add Sioux City to the list. FAA is out there I think.

Anything that you are worried about just wrap in a blanket (you have to move those too. If you run out of those, foam on that back was a good idea.

Yeah, I gots to agree with everybody above about it not bein' a big "sweat" to move your boxen. Other than the common sense things like, no serious mishandling or violent jars (ie don't drop any boxen out the window or on a concrete floor, don't drop check any other delicate componets, etc) I don't think it'll hurt anything, just hurry up with your move and get back on line "crunchin' " (only joking except for the hurry up and get back on line :p:)

Good luck with your new positition and unfortunately, I have no ideer what a SD/NE/IA looks like, what the letters stand for or what it is (remember I'm "understanding " challenged ). Just good luck with your new positition :D

DCin' FOREVER!

If you have tower cases lay them on their sides with the heatsink facing up for traveling. If you have large cpu heatsinks like a TRUE I would remove them for transporting.
Also re-seat all cards and memory sticks before powering the box up for the first time after the move.
This is also a good time to clean out any and all case fans. Unplug the batteries in your UPS just to be safe.

Hey! That is my neck of the woods. Don't worry, we've had electricity and running water now for a couple of years already. :) Soon, you'll learn to love cattle (they're delicious). :D

The main thing I would worry about is the heatsinks on the CPUs. Since they are backplate mounted, it can be a bitch to remove them. Instead, what you might do is find a way to secure them so they do not move around and store the cases horizontally instead of vertically.

And oraldlight got the state abbreviations correct. If I remember correctly, Xillikon at least has the excuse of being from Canada to not know the state abbreviations. Kind of annoying because I was going to bug someone about it because even this old fogey remembers them. :p

You kinfolk got that thar' AC or DV Eeeelectricieee out in the back 40? Running water INSIDE the house too? Gol' darn it. Next thing you knows, thay'll have some of Al Gore In-ter-porn stuff too. j/k

LOL! Now now, you shouldn't scare Sunin. He'll make an excellent fence post salesman and will soon make enough money to be able to move out of his sod house. :D

I packed my computers myself and moved them myself. Movers never touched them, too much can go wrong in the back of a semi that's traveling 2500 miles...

It should be fairly easy to find Sunin out there. Either look for the extension cord as big as a pipe, or he'll be down the street form the power generator. Just follow the heat to his new home.

How long before he's run out of town for using up all the electricity out there too?

when i went from NJ->WA a few years back, all I did was tighten the screws on my cards, pop off the heatsink on one of my rigs, and generally just make sure everything was seated properly when booting it back up for the first time. no fuss involved.

Just take photos and make sure you have them each listed on the moving documents. Remember that they are all quads with dual 9800 gx2's, a 500gb HD, and 4gb of ram

Big boxes, those damn foam peanuts and a U-Haul. Move them youself and they will make it in piece. Nobody can move them better than yourself.

Fold On Dude.;)

Yeah, I gots to agree with Leganfuh big time

Like Leganfuh said "Nobody can move them (your boxen) better than yourself." and Leganfuh's so right. :D If you don't move anyting but your "rear end" by yourself, please move your boxen also. (of course it could take a while to move 20 or so boxen and it may be impossible or impracticle to do by yourself, but you know the old saying "if you want your boxen moved safely, in one piece and with the respect they deserve, move em' yourself" or something like that

Good luck on your move. :)

Keep on DCin'

I tend to keep the boxes that my cases came in. I used specifically for times like these. If you still have them, then use them. Most case manufacturers have decent boxes and as long as it arrived to YOU safely, the box itself should be able to handle a short move.

If you don't have the boxes, I would rent a van (assuming they don't all fit in your car/truck) and drive them over yourself. I would avoid the "popcorn" only because the damn things get stuck in the most obscure places within your boxen and you'll be picking those out for days after the move. If I remember correctly, you do have a couple of TRUE 120's. As others have suggested, it would be best to remove and then reapply them when they are at their final location. Given that it is a short move and if you're not driving on backwoods country roads, you may be able to get away with not pulling them.

Good luck with the move

I have all the original boxes for my systems, they take up a lot of space, but make a move go so much smoother.

I plan to move myself if this does pan out. If not no worries... I always move myself... I hate movers in general cuz they really have not vested interest in anything other than doing it quickly.

Well the move is on! Siouxland bound otherwise known as the Tri-state area of Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa. Looking to live most likely in Iowa, but we will see... so my boxen will have a moving party... Late October, with expected refiring by Nov 1st.

I ever tell you I hate moving :) This truly has to be one of the banes of society!

If you pick the house/apt that you will be moving into, now you can make sure it will be a good place for your boxen.

Look for a basement if you get a house. It helps keep my boxen cold and power bill quite a bit lower.

Good luck with the move. Yes moving is the bane of modern society, but it happens.

As someone that has not had the same address for more than 12 months in the last 5 years, I know your hatred of moving. I look forward to renewing my lease this December for the first time in...ever.

Iowa?? Does that mean you'll be able to raise chickens for sacrificing to the folding gods? Or a life time supply of manue for the generator you'll need for the (folding) farm?

Yes the sacrifices will be plentiful! There are areas that look to be straight out of Children of the Corn! LOL...

Power should be pretty stable, its all under ground and I'm at an elevation of what I can only guess is 1k feet, up a mountain. If the home I'm going after works out that is!

Hope all will forgive me if I end up being more scarce from the forums from about 10/15 to 11/15. My focus will be shifted to a singular task.

Wow, the second floor is (looks) unfinished! Great place for Many, Many Boxen!!

Looks nice! New constructions, plenty of room for boxen. Built in pets (spider).....

Does she come with the house?

Great house, love the new building smell (I lived that twice myself and it's always awesome. My current condo is only a few months old). I see a lot of potential for a nice farm and if you plan it out, it will make all of us envious of you :D

is that blue cable CAT5? if so it dosent look UV rated, its going to be very unhappy in a year or two lol

nice place, i wish i could afford a house but everything down here in miami is still pretty much unaffordable even after the housing melt-down

Nope its a ground for the gas main. The house does not have cat 5 runs.... yet....

Gimme time :) That and I need an audio run up stairs as the basement is going to be my theater!

Its a ranch with a basement so I'm going to have 8 runs down in the basement that I use for boxen, monitors, etc. I may even make them all 30 amps, will be talking to an electrician to see. Its a 200 amp main, so double what I have currently. Weee, and the house has something like 32 breakers already in, which means no circuits with 9 outlets on it. The house should have 2-3 breakers per room

if your going to be running electrical i would run 240v outlets instead of going too crazy with the current @110v.... your power supplies should run it without issue and then your loosing less current due to resistance in the wire (plus with the price of copper you can run thinner wire! or less circuits)
