Minecraft

All minecraft players give me one sentence why I should buy this game lol. And what do you do in the different game modes, survival, creative etc etc

It's not for everyone. Some people will play it for an hour and put it down. Other, more creative types, will get solidly addicted to it.

I was convinced to buy it after playing just a little while of Creative mode.

Long term enjoyability of the game boils down to a very simple question. How much do you enjoy mining for resources and buildings things out of them. There are some other rpg elements to the game but the crux is mining and constructing buildings and structures. If that appeals to you then you can have a lot of fun. If not then you'll get short term fun out of it.

I'm not a creative, or repetitive grinding type of player, but I found it strangely compelling and I can't even say for sure why that is. It's just fun.

Its a work in progress. Its amazing how much fun it is even in its current simple, buggy state. The halloween update alone looks to double the content.

Basically at this point we just have a functional world generator plus a few primitive crafts and some token mobs.If the things to come are as good then your ~$14 will be the best gaming investment you've made in a while.

I wouldn't assume too much. Notch seems like a kind of fickle guy. Who knows how long he'll actually be working on Minecraft.

Like he says in the official website:

Once sales start dying and a minimum time has passed, I will release the game source code as some kind of open source. I'm not very happy with the draconian nature of (L)GPL, nor do I believe the other licenses have much merit other than to boost the egos of the original authors, so I might just possibly release it all as public domain.

I'm sure the community will carry on where he left off.

I bet a free weekend of Minecraft would get a lot of people on board. Here's to hoping the next patch gives us more RPG-ish elements (mobs invading our towns, etc)

what would define the town for the mob to attack though?

Proximity of items built by players; the more and closer the items (blocks, buildings, etc.) the more likely it's a town

There already was a free weekend. It was more like a 4-day free weekend but yeah, it did contribute to a shit ton of sales.

i wasnt able to connect this morning.. lets try again.

nope not working...

Not working for me either. How do you have it set up? Did you leave it on the default port of 25565 and then port forward it to IP your server it set up on.

I currently have a server running a VM on my main rig. 66.212.210.144:23000. Feel free to jump on. My friend and I are currently working on building a football stadium. If multiple people are on and you experience any lag let me know and I can allocate more resources to the VM. I haven't had more than 2 people on at the same time.

Just go watch some youtube video's on it, and you should figure out if it's for you or not fairly quickly, and if you're a creative-type person who was ever into lego's, old-school 8-bit games, or first-person shooters at all you're pretty much guaranteed to love this game, and you will probably find it to be the most addictive game you've ever played.

I knew within 5 minutes of watching my first minecraft video that i was going to buy it.

It works out to ~$14 US and you support an Indie dev in the process so theres really nothing to lose.

if youre into exploration , youll be rewarded. Building is also very entertaining. At first i was all about finding caves and mining diamond and gold. Now Im building towers , waterslides , underwater lair and soo much more.

I am about to make a video of my lair. Its getting interesting , not big like some videos , but very well designed.

Yeah the first week i went crazy in caves now i stick to the surface for the most part. Building is more fun than digging and i seem to have become obsessed with making big ass buildings really high in the air.

OK, figured out that if my ISP changes my IP all the time, you guys can't connect.

With the surprising amount of freedom Minecraft offers, it is easy to become committed to the projects you decide to undertake.

There are three game modes planned, of which only two are currently available as the game is still unfinished.

Creative has no enemies, no goal. You have an unlimited amount of blocks to place, so players spend their time making random stuff that interests them. To be perfectly honest, playing in Creative reminds me of playing in a sandbox as a little child. With a little imagination you can make whatever kind of structures/sculptures you can think of. It's free to play and is not being further developed

Adventure mode is not available yet, and is supposedly intended for players who like to explore more than build. Not a whole lot of details yet.

Survival is the mode most people are interested in and is available in both Singleplayer and Multiplayer and is currently being updated most frequently. It's often called Alpha. Soon it will be Beta. Survival adds hostile enemies to the world which only come out when it's dark (at night or in caves). If you'd like to survive, you'll have to build and create tools to keep yourself alive, or just set the game to Peaceful difficulty. Survival mode isn't very hard to survive right now, but Notch isn't done yet. Survival might be the most fun mode for creative players since there are more things you can craft and it takes more effort to acquire your resources so the sense of accomplishment is increased.

You should not buy this game if you require a plot or storyline to enjoy a game, and definitely not if you feel "done" with a game once you've beaten all the levels/boss/what-have-you. The game is not designed to entertain you as much as it is a tool for you to entertain yourself - hopefully that makes sense.

Now I have to finish strip mining the southern hills a bit further, then I'll dig a moat for the big castle.

It's nothing compared to some of the things other people are building, but I'm having fun.

Nice. Lava moat or water?

Water, I'm just going to dig out the flat dirt outside the outer wall to the south. I'll let the ocean fill it.

After that I'll build the second moat bridge, then I'll have to come up with something new to build.

Nice castle man! now I wanna do one...

But ala 8bit games... Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior or something...

Good stuff. Fill that courtyard with wildlife and work up a few bow & arrows.

I wish there was an option to pause without saving. I was exploring a gigantic cavern system that went from the surface to bedrock and back up again in at least two areas, with a gorgeous mountain/lavafall on the surface. Anyways, part of the cavern ascended to just below the surface and the ceiling was ~50x50 sand suspended in air! I wondered if pulling a block would jog gravity's memory--it did and the collapse was pretty cool to see.

fraps is your friend!

SulSeeker, thanks for hosting. I did a bit of work extending the primary mine and some beautification of the lower mine area. I left a crafting area with storage replete with tools and materials for anyone to use.

Also, I found a spawn cube not too far off the main line. Just look for the stairs and the sign.

I just ordered cheap 3D-glasses for this game because I thought the 3D-anaglyph setting looked really good with these shit-glasses without frames. :) Can't wait.

Let us know how it works out. Is it the traditional red/blue glasses?

Yup, the anaglyph worked really well and didn't need a 3D-monitor obviously. Now I'm looking for other games that support it.

Wow I just logged onto your server. Nice setup you've got going on! I think I'll come by some more once I get more and more familiar with the SP side of things.
