Minecraft

i just watched like 20 tutorial videos on various things.....holy crap.....amazing what the game can do and I'll get that good at it.

It really is pretty awesome -- The ONLY bummer thing for me is that Multiplayer has a lot of bugs, and a lot of the cool stuff is broken in it. Hopefully the Halloween update will fix that. I'm running my own personal server for a few friends, and its awesome playing together, I just wish more things worked :).

Such is the life of Alpha testing.

General building just works fine. My buddies and I have a mini-city going on with canalways and skybridges to get around. Pretty much any advanced functions like redstone and minecarts and such a re not implemented yet so it's unfortunate, but somewhat understandable.

Thanks! I been playing less than a week, and probably somewhere between 24-30 hours in-game so far. I'm totally addicted - can you tell. :p

I can tell! I have never been that much addicted to a game since... ever! Im now in the process of building a tower inside a mountain.

Were you able to move the lava via a bucket? I am not sure how you got the lava up so high?

I haven't even found lava yet.

You can move lava with buckets (same as with water). You can also use buckets of lava to power furnaces.

The bucket gets consumed eventually tho with the lava furnace method. If you're rolling in iron and lava moreso then coal or wood it's a good alternative.

I just picked this game up today... OMG soo much fun.. I am currently building a fortress on top of a mountain which I am going to hollow out eventually. I had to make sure the monsters wouldn't get me first though :D

another one fell into the minecraft abyss. Prepare to be consumed.

Yeah i am working on expanding my mountain castle to another mountain top... That way, I have two mountains minus the ghouls.

for those who never tried to play with waters.... please do! I discovered a whole new world while playing with this. Im now adding a waterfall on each side of my towers, a pool in the basement and im thinking about so many other things.

Any tips or resources for the very beginner? I love such indie games, but now often I wonder how digging and building within an empty world might not be boring at all? Multiplayer hardly works, so I guess my world is for my eyes only... Monsters? Isn't running from them an easy task?

How huge the world can be?

Well... i think im a beginner as well. But im very efficient now. Running away from monster is easy , but the creepers ( the green ones that explode when your near them) can destroy your base , so build with defense in mind.

I have basically 2 worlds, one with peaceful settings to let my creativity go, the other one is a real survival world where you need to think a lot while building and exploring deep caves.

I usually start my world by choosing one where the spawn point is interesting. If not , i delete and start a new one. I usually start by building a little base out of rocks. I find some coal for torches , and then i start digging. Usually at a 45 degree angle to make a staircase like tunnel. I listen a lot while digging because if i hear water flowing , its a goog sign and i dig toward it to usually find a cave. My only rule while digging to find a cave is to NEVER dig under me . NEVER. Did this once and lost 16 diamonds when i fell into a deep abyss into lava. I was mad , but its a good lesson.

I take all my info on minecraftwiki , it helps locating ressource and crafting recipes.

Look for some "Let's Play" videos on youtube, just search Minecraft.

If you think it'll be boring, all I can say is try it out. Other games may *claim* to be "sandbox" games, but in how many of them can you build a castle and a moat? None, that I'm aware of.

Running from the monsters is pretty easy, but that can prevent you from exploring cave systems and whatnot since they spawn anywhere that it's dark enough.

How huge can the world be? I read it can be, at maximum, approximately 8 times the surface area of the earth. Each block represents 1m.

The multiplayer may not work very well right now, but the game is supposedly going into Beta soon? You have to keep in mind this is an Alpha version. For an Alpha, it's pretty damn fun. Hell for any game it's pretty damn fun, the fact that it's an Alpha really just means it stands to get a LOT better.

I kept saying the same thing "How can this be fun? I don't get it."

Now I'm saying "Why am I having so much fun? I don't get it."

Its really fun, and I'm having a blast, and I have NO IDEA why. But its cool ;). A lot of MP features are broken, but a big patch is coming at halloween, so we're all hoping it fixes a lot of MP.

Redstone and minecarts are some of the funnest things :).

I assume you mean the mob spawn cages? You can't destroy them, but if you put a torch on each side they will cease spawning mobs.

Most people setup a suicide machine that will pull the mobs into it as they spawn and deposit their drops in a safe place to gather. I had one with skeletons and a lava ceiling that they'd end up hitting, die, and their arrows etc would flow along the water underneath to a collection point.

Not sure I understand how that works, got any pictures? :D

I setup a zoo :). Two actually.

The dungeon that they spawn in is surrounded by stone, but the front corner has a fence build around it, so they can't get out. You can go visit them :). I have two, because I found 2 spawners.

Zombieland and SpiderTropolis.

This is all on my private server with friends. I'll try to get some screenshots later when I get home from work,

I just found out how to do this today - looking forward to trying it out! I drew the diagram as it was being explained to me to make sure I understood how it works. :)

Basically you build a huge water funnel (water area can be as big as you want to catch lots of mob), then have it run down to one little hole. Place a ladder in the hole, which will block all the liquid from running down, and put a lava stream on the level above the ladder so it runs down and stops on the square on top of the ladder. The mob should fall into water, get swept by water-flow and get stuck on ladder where they are burned to death by lava. The loot doesn't get stuck on ladder, so it all falls underneath where you can collect it.

I'm sure there are plenty of other ways to build traps, but this is the basic concept as I understand it.

I think I spent like 4 hours last night just making a fort on the top of a huge hill....I haven't even gotten to the point where I could get some good minerals and do cool stuff.

Nice, gonna try it now. Man work productivity is gonna be an all time low this week :p

I've noticed there's a limit to how high you can build. That made me very sad :(

I tried this out yesterday, and I got to say I'm extremely impressed with it. Watching some of the youtube videos for it - saw this one I can't find, but it's from a MP server and the buildings were massively impressive. I'm not certain I'm creative enough to really enjoy this.

Yea, there are limits on the Y axis (both upper and lower), but they're both pretty large.

Damn...I fail at trap making. I ended spawning a buncha black blocks that I can't destory....:(

You can destroy them, it just takes a lot of hits to do so. I've destroyed every one I've come across.

This shit is some of the worst gaming crack I've seen in a long time. Picked it up yesterday and had to make myself put it down.

learned one thing... dont play with fire.

had to rebuilt 3 levels of my tower.

I haven't built any traps yet or anything.. I used three mountains to build a castle type thing. If I am in the bottom of the mine at night, creatures spawn in my castle I think.. If they don't I do not know how they get there?

But I haven't really done to much forging or creating. just digging and design.

Super fun though, I plan on playing a lot more and once they get the server software better I will host on my little home server for me and friends.

Anyone have any good videos or articles to watch or read?

Let's see some multimonitor screenshots!

I was playing around with it but it almost crashed but then came back, so I took a quick screenshot. My second display is a 720p HDTV behind me so it's not really optimal to play like this. :p Makes me want to have eyefinity though.

hrmmm game wont run on this PC, bad driver error. Trying to update them now. ATI X1300

Make sure you have 64bit AND 32bit Java installed if you're running a 64bit OS. I was getting all kinds of bizarre errors on my laptop before I uninstalled Java and made certain both flavors were on the machine. No such issues on my desktop, though, so who knows if that's what it really was.

im pretty sure mob spawns are indestructable

You are wrong.

Hmm - I was also under the impression they couldn't be destroyed, and that you had to either block them off with lighting or trap them for free loot; but the wiki says they can be destroyed by hand or pick-axe!

So can you provide any more info on this? I tried for what I thought was quite a while, but couldn't destroy the ones I found. Exactly how long does it take to destroy one by hand or w/ stone/iron pickaxe? Does it pretty-much require diamond pickaxe like obsidian, or could you actually destroy one with say a stone pickaxe in a given length of time?

It just takes a long time to destroy them.

You used to be able to mine them and place them. People would build spawn traps and harvest the drops. But now it just gets destroyed.

But that's okay, no more baddies in that local cave area!

I think the mossy blocks around them are more valuable than the items in the chests though.
Loot in the chests seems quite random. Best thing I've pulled from one was a bucket, just meant I didn't have to waste my steel to make another one.

You can do it with a stone pickaxe and i believe even your bare hands.

I destroyed a spawn cage of spiders things. It took a long long time of hitting like 20-30 seconds at least.

There's also a limit on how deep you can dig. The game world is only something like 128 blocks tall. I had hoped somewhat that with infdev the game world would extend further vertically as well as horizontally.

finally got a record, made a record player for my underwater fortress. unfortunately its kind of creepy music...

also, i have about 5 saddles, thinking of trapping some pigs somewhere and making a race track
