Millenium Falcon mod is STOLEN!!!

Most of you probably remember my Millenium Falcon mod. Well, VIA Technologies recently asked if they could display it at WinHEC 2005 (Windows hardware engineering conference). I agreed, as long as they display my book along with it (free marketing and all).

The show went off without a hitch, the mod made it there in one piece, etc.

When Microsoft was going to ship it back, the box containing the mod was stolen off the desk of the event organizer. Yes, the mod (computer, keyboard, mouse, and one copy of my book) were stolen from the Microsoft campus. Security has been going through video tapes, but so far no leads.

Microsoft has offered to compensate me with some money - enough to rebuild it better, etc.

Do I rebuild at all? I'm kind of upset/numb (it varies moment to moment) and sometimes I want to build a better one but sometimes I don't want to mod at all anymore. My wife wants me to forget it and buy a cheap motorcycle so we can go ride together (she has a bike right now, I don't - long story).

Suggestions/Sympathy/etc. appreciated.

Oh, and if anyone sees any "new" pics of Millenium Falcon PC with an X-Wing mouse give me a yell. I'd like to find the guy/girl who took it and do things to them Sadaam never even thought of.

wow that blows ass man. Hope they find whoever did it. I guess whoever it was is on the dark side of the force.

get the bike, man, spend some time with your wife (biking? what could be better?) and cool off, then maybe you'll feel more inclined to do it again (or they might find it in the meantime) :D

I feel for you man, the loss of a loved one will be greeted with agony and suffering :(

Take some time, evaluate it when it's not so fresh in your mind, I vote get a bike... but I cannot make decisions for you

I would do your best to get the word out that it was stolen, repost some pics and try to get a sticky here and else where. Dont let who ever stole it, sell it or even enjoy it in public. Its a one of a kind item.

I would take the cash. Make sure you bill them for more then your time and materials. Artists dont sell art for the cost of the paint...

It's so stupid to steal something unique. The instant someone sees it in the hands of someone else, it's instant trouble. This person better hope he or she lives in a spider hole or some shack in the woods. Then again, there prolly wouldn't be electricity to run a computer.

I agree, get the word out to as many modding forums as possible. Something that elaborate can't stay hidden forever, and eventually you'll get a clue. I'll throw up a notice on as many forums as I can find.

Use the money to get the bike. You'll enjoy it a lot more.

That sucks dude... Like said above, make sure you get your moneys worth for it. Someone was very careless when that theifing happened. I dont know what you want to do so I really cant make suggestions one way or the other. Obviously at one point you cared enough to make the mod, the question is do you still care enough. And it seems that might not be the case... It's up to you....

Good luck either way, and if I see the thing pop up on the radar, I'll make sure your the first to know...

It seem like most of us are in agreement go for the cast but don't rebuild. Just think about you are gonna have to name it again and u can't call it STARWARS: Return of the Millenium Falcon or can you? Maybe u can make it a prequel. Wait no that would bomb like the rest. I'd go for the bike personally. Sorry for ur loss man my computer isn't even as tricked out or as original as urs was and if someone stole mine i'd hunt them down and break their knees and crush each finger with a brick. Hope they get what i comming to them.

ps on a side note maybe Bill Gates is playing some battlefront on it as we speak in his Nerd Cave. or confiscated it because of the priated version of windows we all have lol/

Sounds like you need a StarDestroyer mod... to hunt down the falon ;)

Just my 2 cents...

that or the bike ;)

Microsoft = $$$$$$$$$$ x 100 billion

You = $$ x a few thousand maybe?

I bet you could get a good chunk of change if you threatin them to go to the media...

i can see the headlines.. "Microsoft lacks in security not only in OS"

Is money going to make you feel any better?... well, if you get to ride with your wife it may take your mid off it, then maybe.

Still, make sure you get lots of publicity about this and make sure you get them to agree to prosecute the bastard that did this.

How much will you pay for a Bounty on their head?
I'd be happy to do whatever you want to the first person I see with it in thair hands.

Go for the cash, just don't sign anything saying you won't say anything more. Never trust Microsoft.
That way you can post this all over the internet. The thing is bound to turn up somewhere.

meh thinks ^^^^^^ (MM) took it.

Only if they are stupid and brag about it, will you find it..

But still. best of luck.

Wow man that sucks. I say take the money buy the bike go riding witht eh wife. Take some time to cool off, in the interim they might find it, if not you'll have the time to calm down and plan out the new mod.

Post some pics. Get the word out. I belong to a few other forums I'll post on them that it was stolen and have them keep an eye out as well.

By chance, was it the one built inside the toy? Or did you build it from scratch? I ask because I don't think I've ever seen it.

Is it wrong to lol? I'm so paranoid about my mods that they dont go anywhere with out me. I even thought of hiring case mod security :D

they aren't gonna give it back to him if they "find it" since they gave him the money for it... another thing is what if the person who took it goes to any of these forums? and they spot "wanted" signs for it.. they are gonna be all that much more tight lipped about it

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, that was a VERY nice mod.

I'd bill MS for a large fee since you graciously voulenteered it and they lost it through carelessness. Keep an eye out on E-bay for someone looking to sell it, especially this week with the hype surrounding the release of the new movie. And I know how you feel, when I moved six months ago the movers stripped all the internal components out of one of my mods (a briefcase PC) and delivered just the empty case. Probably took them about 2 hours to undo all the screws. They even took the custom brackets (which were the real difficult things to build) and the fan controller. They also stole a custom subwoofer from my home theater, stole a case of specially imported German beer, broke a headboard, and stole/ damaged a bunch of other stuff. It does feel incredibly violating. I got the "settlement" a week or two ago - after pricing new components at current costs (same as were taken, not upgraded) they gave me 50% of the cost of parts replacement (they said they were used parts, but how does that affect function!). And nothing more than parts cost because the rest was "home made" and therefore according to them has no attributable value. I'm offended. At least MS is a tech company that should realize the value of PR and has plenty of cash to spare, unlike the bottom of the barrel moving company that was forced on me (my work paid for the move and chose the company).

Buy the motorcycle, go out riding. I've got a HD and Duc, it's a great stress reliever and you get some fresh air and bonding time with the wife. A wife who rides is COOL, don't take it for granted. Do a mod that's completely different - It won't feel like you're having to re-do your work and lets you stretch your creativity in a new direction. And next time, make them sign a receipt with the value on it so you both know what it will cost them if they lose or damage it.

Get them to buy a OCC custom StarWars themed chopper for you to ride ;)

With a modded computer built in...

No way, I fear I may lose something dear to me in the absence of myself all the time

has anyone stopped to think Bill Gates might have taken it

EDIT: added "might" because i don't want Bill Gates' to sue me

What operating system were you running? Maybe the support window had closed and they decided they needed to remove the computer from the world before additional security flaws were detected. Or worse, what if it was using Linux with Star Office? *GASP*

Then again, maybe Bill's attempts to build his cyborg army haven't been working out that well and he figured some people might thing it really was a combat space ship.

I'd say take the cash, post pics around the forums. You might get lucky. I have a feeling that if Microsoft pays you off they're going to close the books and give up attempting to recover it. I wouldn't worry about them locating it then not returning it since they'd reimbursed you. Microsoft's Secret Police have "better" things to worry about than tracking down a piece of art left in their custody.

ask for much more that its worth. m$ can afford it. ask for a lightsaber from one of the movies, bill can afford it.

One thing you definitely SHOULDN'T do is sell yourself short. That computer was a one of a kind... I wouldn't even consider it a computer... more like a piece of rare art. How can Microsoft replace that? How bout all the time you put into it? I would definitely multiply cost x10 at least.

Oh.. while your at it.. you can do what that Mike Rowe Soft guy did.. he ended up getting free courses in MS school. ;)

That is the Idea I was thinking of. Expensive as hell but you can surf and and ride all at the same time. Well maybe you better stick to one at a time. I have done that whole head first crash on a bike and it was fun until the ground came out of nowhere and hit me.

Ouch

I rode mt bikes in races during college (and still) and have had a few crashes, 50mph tops on it... but nothing like wrecking on a real "bike"... I feel your pain...

Hmmm, publicity for MS, cool bike for JediKnight, money for OCC, everybody wins! Just tell them that since they lost a customized machine, they have to replace it with a customized machine...

ask for nothing short of the return of your case and compensation for your losses... MS should have the kindness to hire enough security to keep a one of a kind machine SAFE... if they cant do it bring it to court... they have no excuse for this... its just pure stupidity...

I've seen this mod but many others haven't. Can you post a few pics to refresh everyone's memory...so if it pops up, they will know what they are looking at. This is the one that was featured in CPU or MaximumPC right? I don't remember which one I saw it in.

Good luck with finding it.

court? please. that's retarded. they're offering compensation. it's not like it was the hope diamond. things happen. if you let someone borrow a laptop and it was stolen out of their car, you wouldn't sue. it sucks that the time was taken from him, but you can't throw lawsuits around. that kinda thinking has turned the country in to a screwed up legal system.
