The distribution model of Microsoft works has always been a little odd. It's basically given to OEM's so Microsoft can get recognition out there for their software. Now Microsoft is looking to cash in on these boxes by offering versions of Works that are supported by advertisements. As to how the revenue split between Microsoft and the OEM's is going to shake out remains to be seen.
Something tells me that the first sentence is going to end up being the cause of this venture failing to take off if the revenue stream gets much bigger.
Works SE (which stands for Sponsored Edition) is free to PC makers, though they don't get a cut of the ad revenue. Large computer makers typically only pay a buck or two for the low-end version of Works, though.
