Microsoft Windows 8 Has User-Friendly Reinstall Button

I really don't think that quote was menat for [H] users, I have win 95, 98se, ME, XP(+ a couple of slipstream versions), and win 7. All of those are within reach, if I get up and walk 5 feet I've also got a couple versions of DOS and logitech branded win 3.1 on 3.5" floppies.

I do agree with others that this feature will be of limited use since the target audience isn't likely to feel comfortable doing that sort of thing anyways.

However, it does have a refresh function that is pretty similar to a windows repair installation. I tried it a couple of days ago and it had to have the install media but it worked well.

My windows install disc sets are feet away from my PC like most people so yes I would like real discs. However a reinstall feature has been sorely needed in the last couple iterations of Windows. I hate destroying all install associations just to reinstall an OS.

What they need to do is have this present you with a list of your install programs, you put a check mark next to the ones you want to have automatically reinstalled post-refresh. When you first install an application, it could ask you "do you want to have the ability to reinstall this with refresh?" - saying yes would put the installs files on a designated drive/folder.
It will reinstall all your apps for you, and restore all your personal data if you use skydrive. Metro only apps, which is a downer, but for a lot of cases this will be just as handy. My mum pretty much only uses metro apps.

To the naysayers: XP started the disk-less revolution almost 10 years ago. Hiding an OS on a recovery partition is not new, so quit acting like it's the end of the world when viruses attack. Not sure how OEM will handle Windows 8, but if XP, Vista and 7 is any indication, you'll be able to burn backups of the recovery partition the moment you fire up your new computer for the first time.

I believe Windows 8 touts the native ability to do this without OEM bundled bloat. It's nice to have the ability to do vanilla Windows 8 recovery and restore rather than OEM recovery and restore.

Seems like a waste of hdd space to me, sounds like it will have its own encrypted partition or something to keep it safe...hope you can disable that feature , everything you need for install can be found online

The basic cab's that windows can use for a reinstall has been included in the install since Windows Vista. and the refresh requires you to create a baseline image first. It's really is not that much different than system restore.

I was really against it doing that too...then I constructed this faraday sheilding from sheets of aluminium and it was fine after that. When you say "system" you mean your program files folder for EA games, right? It's just some sensationalist nonsense some moron who doesn't know how lots of other programs work invented for attention. :p

This, and as usual, the sheople online have spread it to the far winds...

I think some of your are over thinking this. This is for the average joe that is sick and tired of their current setup.

The rest of us tech people will continue doing what we normally do for situations like this.

D'awwww, what a nice feature for such a cute little toy OS - how convenient. Reminds me of those fisher price computer learning systems. :p
