Want to get Windows 7 on the cheap? Well then, it looks like pre-ordering is the way to go. Then again, the “regular” prices aren’t too bad either, hit the link for all the info.

From Friday through July 11, consumers in the U.S. will be able to buy an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home premium for $49 or Windows 7 Professional for $99. That offer is good for both XP and Windows Vista PCs, regardless of whether someone has been trying out the pre-release version of the operating system. That matches the details in a memo from Best Buy that leaked earlier this month.

Does the upgrade version require an existing installation or just swapping in the XP/Vista cd/dvd at some point during a clean Windows 7 installation?
 
Thats a great point. I'd be willing to do an upgrade if it was early on in the install. Outside of that, it looks like to go for a clean retail install.

After my fiasco many many moons ago with the 98SE to ME upgrade (I know, I know, I was young and foolish then, and thought that only IT guys could only do 2K), it's been ingrained to pay a bit more, and go for a full install.
 
Microsoft selling non-OEM copies of Windows for reasonable prices? Say it isn't so!

These prices are awesome. They don't affect me, as I'm not sure I'll ever have to buy a retail copy of Windows, but awesome nonetheless.
 
i wonder if it'll include the same features for clean install that vista does.

vista's upgrade discs (even SP1) can allow u install w/o key. then 'upgrade' that install with key and it's like a brand new full version without ever knowing previous keys.
 
i went the vista ultimate route when i got vista.....and i dont use hardly any of that ultimate crap....i think i can stand a $49 upgrade to win 7 home premium
 
Looks like US Euros are getting the full version of 7 for the upgrade price because of the removal of IE :)

I'll buy that for a dollar.

According to Ars, it looks like upgrade versions will allow (require for XP) you to do a clean installation of 7.

Huh. $50 for a couple of weeks when no-one has money to spend, then 2.5x that later when people might have the cash. Looks like I'll be sticking with Vista and XP.
 
$219 for everything is still unacceptable. I could see it being reasonable if it came with a standard Office 2007... Otherwise, I'm sticking with XP and migrating to Linux.

I find this actually a little bit disappointing.

MS needed to do two things with the pricing and licensing for Windows 7 to really get people to upgrade. Pricing is the only way MS could bungle the Windows 7 launch and I don't think they dropped the price enough.

1. The pricing needs to be lower then what it is at least for Home Premium. Saving $10 on the upgrade and $40 on the full retail is hardly a price break at all, especially with the economy in the crapper. Professional and Ultimate are business/enthusiast so I have no issue paying more for those versus Home Premium. But personally I think Windows 7 Home Premium should be $65 for an Upgrade and $125 for the retail disc.

2. Multi-computer licensing is needed for Home Premium if they want to keep the cost at $200 for a retail disc. Say two computers for $200. $100 a piece for a full retail version of Windows 7 HP wouldn't be bad at all. Better yet they could have kept the price the same and made it a 3 PC license for $240.

I do like their limited pre-order upgrade option pricing. So I can see myself pre-ordering a copy or two of Windows 7 Home Premium.

Yes you MUST having an existing install to do an upgrade. You have to start the installer from inside of windows to do an upgrade. If you start it off the DVD you can only do a clean install. Same as with Vista.

As for your second post that has been discussed many times. You can buy an upgrade copy of windows 7 if you have XP. However when you go to install it, you will not be able to actually directly upgrade your machine from XP to 7 and keep everything installed. Instead the installer will use XP to say it meets the requirements to use the upgrade dvd, but then go ahead and wipe the XP install and do a clean install of 7.

This is what Vista did if you tried to upgrade from 2000 to Vista.

:confused: So because you have no money to spend that means no one else does?
 
I wish the release would come sooner. Client is leasing new machines and I would love to have Windows 7 Enterprise available for the Applocker feature. I'm drooling over it right now.

And the new remote play features of Windows Media also has me drooling. Makes things a whole lot easier. Now I has have to work out the steaming of my movies to my Blackberry Storm.

It also is a limited time offer (only until July 11) and requires an already installed Operating System. For enthusiasts who image a system after installation upgrading is a valid option. For people who don't it's not that great unless they plan on reinstalling XP/Vista if a drive dies.

Plus there are those of us who would still like to use their older licenses again for other purposes. I may buy two upgrades to Windows 7 HP but those are for other computers not my main desktop. My desktop will take a full Windows 7 Ultimate because I don't want to invalidate my Vista Ultimate license which will most likely be used for an HTPC in the future.

Now the professional edition... can I assume that's gonna be like the "Ultimate" of Vista?

And any word about them selling the 32-Bit and 64-Bit versions separately?

I want to stay 64-Bit now that I bought extra RAM and want to build an i7 by the end of the year.

They better have 64 and 32 bit versions.

No. Professional is the equivalent to Vista Business not Ultimate. There is a Windows 7 Ultimate but you can only buy a full retail version. Pricing is $319.99.

As for x86/x64 I would assume you get your pick for upgrades and for retail packages I'm betting it's like Vista and you get two DVDs inside. One for x86 and the other for x64.

The "limited time/quantity" version of Windows 7 Ultimate is $219. Regular price for W7 Ultimate is listed at $319. Yup, still sticking with Linux. I was hoping the prices were lowered. I would ALMOST pay $200 for the Ultimate version. But anything more than that is a stretch for me.

After finding out I read it wrong, Vista just seems better now. Lol.

Considering Apple is releasing Snow Leopard for $29 upgrade, wasn't it?

I may have to go give ubuntu a try.
 
There was zero mention of whether or not you get both bitted versions in the same box or if you only get one or the other and have to order the other *or* if there will be two different boxed bitted versions. Why couldn't they mention that??
 
Wonder how long before there is a Ultimate Steal version of Windows 7. Think I will stick with Vista until then.
 
Vista Ultimate owners should get a special "Sorry we screwed you" upgrade from Microsoft.

So if I buy the upgrade version will it allow me to do a fresh install without first having to install Vista/XP if a drive dies or I swap hardware?

I've never understood this. Why should we get special upgrade? Because of the "Extras"?

I bought Ultimate because it had EVERYTHING. Extras were just a bonus. If you bought Vista Ultimate for the Extras then you should have rethought your purchase because actually putting down the money.
