Microsoft Security Essentials Beta Now Live!

Aren't full scans scheduled by default to run @ a time when no one is using their computer anyway.? If Having a scheduled full scan can catch things that are new to the virus defenitions that somehow made it throught the gates before they could be detected...they just don't happen to be active in memory.

That said I have it on my laptop and have never noticed any slow downs to date.I'll likely run it till Win 7 goes gold then drop for the extra NOD32 license :)

Works great so far for me. CPU is a little intense but oh well.

Is there a reason you do this on all your posts? Just curious is all.

Most staff of software companies, that voluntarily visit support forums "outside" of work, and provide assistance on products, will have this as a signature. Google it..you'll see several hundred kajillion hits on it from software forums of all types, from Adobe..on down the alphabet, including Microsoft.

This is understand. However it looks as though it's his personal account; therefore not the responsibility of any employer.

yeah .......he isent representing the company he works for in his signature so i dont see how he needs to say that ..........at the end of every post. dont mean to derail topic or anything.

I'm required too, on all posts I make dealing with products my company makes. This post more than others, since I do work on MSE.

A lot of reviews have been saying MSE is great at detecting viruses and trojans but yet they continue to say it's only a last resort product. How can a high detection rate with little to no false positives, relatively low system resources/impact and the best price tag you could ask for, end up making this a 'last resort' product? Are people really that blind to what Norton does to your system and that it's not that great of a product? It's the AOL effect of the naive population.

Also I have a question about the product. When I install updated definitions from WU, it locks up the system for about 5 seconds as it's installing. I'm just guessing it's simply because the cpu is being fully utilized but I have a fast Core 2 and wouldn't expect a complete system halt. Is this a bug or just the way it's going to be?

To be fair, it's still Beta. I know I wouldn't really start suggesting Beta products to general consumers... Especially if I don't know if it's like Windows and needs a completely new install once it gets out of Beta or will just get patched up to the Final level.

I see this too and it's a bit annoying. Love MSE otherwise but there's no reason why the system should halt on an update.

Couldn't agree more. This is a FANTASTIC product. Microsoft has is really taking things up a notch. This is practically invisible and super solid protection and should be in the OS as far as I am concerned with the ability to remove it and use whatever tool you want, pretty much like it is now, just in there buy default.

I signed up for MS Connect through my Windows Live/Technet ID and eventually wound up on the MSE Beta page with no links, downloads or any other way that I could find to join the beta program.

I would like to try this one out. And Office 2010 - that's near public beta, no?

Another thing Ranma_Sao, are there any plans to allow users to hide the tent icon except when it's updating/scanning etc. (like Windows Defender)? I likt my AV products to be completely transparent unless action is needed.

Ditto.

That's one of the huge things I like in an AV. Also good from enterprise-management too (I haven't used that side of this, so I don't know if it already has it or not), means users don't see it so aren't tempted to check it out.

Microsoft Security Essentials is not an Enterprise product, Forefront is the enterprise version.

I don't know about the icon, I work on the engine/signatures part of the product.

MSE seems to run a bit better on Windows 7. I don't get that hick-up when it updates definitions and I don't get a pause when I open files off my second partition. Both of those started to happen when I installed it on Vista but I don't notice them on 7.

Works flawlessly on my 7 machine....
Definitely seems to be designed with 7 in mind.

I also have another MSE success story. The other day I was working on a PC that wouldn't boot due to malware. I installed the drive on this system and started a MalwareBytes full scan. It only detected 4 items but during the scan process MSE found almost 2 dozen items. I wasn't even scanning with it but the active scanning of MSE kept going crazy as items were being read by MB.

I just like that MB clears folder paths and seems to clear more out of the registry.

I know I'm digging up an old thread but it seems that MSE is freaking killing my Windows 7 install. I'll be doing a fresh RTM install later, so figured I'd grab this info now.

Here's my processes before:

I launch IE, here's what happens:
3787725704_fb33532f60_o.png

MSE freaking hijacks the machine. Sometimes it's so bad (especially if I startup a YouTube video or something that it tries to scan (I think) or otherwise processor intensive anyway) that I can't close IE right away.

can you run:
C:\program files\Microsoft Security Essentials\mpcmdrun.exe -GetFiles

And let me know where I can get the support log when this is happening?

and what happens when you launch firefox?
I don't notice it peaking up there... But the odd thing is it's like it's only SOMETIMES.

Most of the time MSE is just fine... I can run IE all day long. But sometimes it's like it gets into this scanning mood... Where no matter what I do, it runs like crap.

Alright, I've created this... Do you want it right now, or right after the next time this happens (to run it then?), or what?
If I need to upload it I can do so. I've saved into a ZIP file, so if you need it just let me know and I can get it to you tomorrow (off to bed right now...)

lol and my post right before yours talks about how Win 7 loves MSE on my build right now. Runs better than on my Vista build.

I can look at it, whenver convienent for you. PM me where I can get the support.cab. For those who keep having the 5 second pause, can I get what OS? What Service Pack Level, how long the install has been around?

Most of the time it runs fine. But whatever it starts doing bogs stuff down like you would not believe...

I don't know if it's related but it seems like only when I play audio (either via WMP or like yesterday, YouTube) when I notice this... At any rate, anytime this has happened, something's been playing audio, and then MSE takes off.

I was on Vista Business x64 SP2 and it paused/locked up, for to 5-6 seconds while it was installing the updated definition. It was doing it from the begining.

Right now I'm on 7 Professional x64 RTM and there is a very short, maybe 1/2 lockup as it's installing the updated definition. It's almost unnoticeable and I rarely notice it unless I'm flipping windows to see if it does it.

This is an incredible product.

Never have seen this. In fact I've never noticed the damn thing at all. This IS an incredible product. It should be installed BY DEFAULT (or some type of selection screen like the EU broswer deal) . Easy to use, fast, great detection, and FREE!!!!

But as soon as its in the box MS will get sued. At the detriment of Windows users. This is what happens when anti-trust laws get subverted to protect the competition instead of consumers.

I can't see running a beta for Virus protection, AVG updates once or twice a day with new bad guys, how can you expect that level of security with a beta?

Microsoft's Betas of late are more like finished products than actual Betas...

Well for one AVG sucks. Two MSE gets on average 3 updates a day from what I can tell. And as Techie said it's being called "beta" but it certainly doesn't feel like a beta.

If you are going to fire back at the beta concept with a finished, free product, at least use a better one for your ammo. With any comparison, Avira runs all over AVG in terms of detection rates and system resources.

AVG sucks.... MSSE blows it outta the water...

Whenever people complain about "beta" software from the perspective that it's inferior to a finished product never seem to realize that most "finished products" are themselves in a constant and perpetual state of beta, just without the beta moniker added to the finished product name. :)

MSE is, at its current state of development, a finished product for all intents and purposes. I'd say they still consider it "beta" simply because more internal testing is being done at Microsoft, and not for any other reasons. Even so, it rocks... so kudos to the development teams.

Yea, it's a great AV product. At least when it's not hijacking my machine :p

I'm hoping when I format and install Win7 fresh on Friday that it'll cure the issues I'm having. Was just hoping to get our friend from Microsoft here all the logs he needs to perhaps figure out why my install has issues...

BTW- where do you aquire the latest build at? Obviously it'll update signature definitions but the actual program build???? Mine might be updated, I have no idea what the latest is.

Well as soon as you install the program it automatically updates to the newest version before you even launch it. The 'beta' version given out by Microsoft is what is avialable on the web to download. I don't think they have released to download the newest one, you just get it as an update when you install the beta.

Hmm, I like Avira but I'd really like to try out MSSE; any idea when they'll open it up for more people?

Open it up? Its not like you have to sign up for it or anything. Since I think the official download link is offline now (or maybe the file is still there, just there are no links to it?) then you can just download it from somewhere else you deem reputable.

At least when you install the application it doesnt ask you to log in or anything, so if you get ahold of the .exe youre good to go?

Ah I was just going by the main site saying they weren't accepting people or whatever.
