Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

Interesting. 2020 was just getting started and the planes/modules were just starting to come out. If this is an entirely new game a lot of people will probably not migrate. Lots of WIP planes still in the works for 2020. While I am sure 2020 will still be good for years to come, it would be disappointing if new features and technologies are not made available to 2020.

Dang, when fs2020 came out about no GPU could run it very well. I got a 1080ti so I could get 30fps at 1080p.

I'm already afraid.

yeah I was surprised to see them announce a new version instead of continuing to upgrade FS 2020

Didn't they used to release a new Flight Simulator every 2 years until X came out? In this day and age it definitely feels weird, though. It feels weird because MSFS2020 felt like a good foundation that they could keep building on into the future.

Asobo released a FAQ that says almost all of our DLC and marketplace purchases will work in 2024. They don't say what the "few exceptions" are, yet.

https://www.flightsimulator.com/microsoft-flight-simulator-2024-faq/

Will Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 be a completely standalone sequel, or will it also be offered as a paid update for existing players?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a standalone simulator and the next-generation sequel to Microsoft Flight Simulator that launched in 2020. Current aircraft and airports that are in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), as well as virtually all Marketplace add-ons, will be supported in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

What kind of support can Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) players expect to see once Flight Simulator 2024 has been released?

We will continue to deliver our Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) Roadmap which has content ranging from Aircraft and Avionics Updates, Sim Updates, City and World Updates, and also the free Dune DLC. We will continue to support Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) post the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launch.

Will all purchases users have made from the Marketplace be transferrable to the new simulator?

With very few exceptions, virtually all add-ons that work in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) today will function in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Add-ons that were purchased from the in-simulator Marketplace will not need to be re-purchased in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

At first I had the first a bit strange to not keep up with Flight Sim 2020, but was it not a bit of single thread for the render loop DX 11 title at heart ? That challenge pretty solid hardware

Which would mean that it was based on very old stuff, DX12 being nearly 8 years old by now, that could have limited them on what they were trying to do, while a lot of the world bing data-engine side of things that is excellent would not have to change an limited update for the player-3d part maybe worth it .

If it is a gamepass release like the previous one, it will not create much friction.

Good point. If the engine was updated to be thoroughly multithreaded it would be worth the purchase. 2020 got better over time, but it was still highly reliant on single threaded performance as most simulations are.

Seeing as even a dinosaur like DCS is finally multithreaded (in beta, granted), it'd be disappointing if MSFS 2024 didn't improve in that regard.

Simulators need a lot of threads because you can populate the world with so many entities. Both DCS and ArmA run fine, but the more units you put on performance drops. There will always be a limit but those games suffer very badly if you create a large scale scenario. I am looking forward to the DCS update when it exits beta. I am also looking forward to ArmA 4 because the ArmA 1/2/3 engine was crap and I hope the new engine improves it.

For FS2024, if they don't improve it that can be a problem. 2020 is very demanding as is.

I heard that the game will be using the Forza Horizon engine, so there is hope for it being multithreaded.

EDIT: I was thinking of Fable Doh! Ignore this post.

So the Coast Guard missions look cool as hell.

There any missions that have kilos of cocaine duct taped to life preservers being dumped over the border?

I bought the Premium Deluxe edition of MSFS 2020, it says that DLC will carry over, I wonder about the additional planes & airports from the Deluxe & Premium Deluxe editions. Will MSFS 2024 have the same 3 tier structure of MSFS 2020?

It is just a base game software update for which they want to charge new money.

I think it is good that way. I don't want MSFS to end up in a corner like DCS which can't charge for base game improvements and hence neglects the base game.

Will there be improvements to the core simulator technology in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?

The development team is improving almost every aspect of the simulator. Some examples include:

-Improved multithreading to improve performance
-Faster download, load, and installation speeds
-Improved aerodynamics and physics simulation
-Improved aircraft systems including electrical, pneumatic, fuel, and hydraulics
-New failure and wear & tear system
-Deeper and wider avionics systems
-Cockpit tablet available by default

Will there be changes to the scenery and terrain in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?
We are improving the global digital twin in three different ways:

Static World:
-Improved ground details
-3D tessellated ground materials
-Enhanced 3D trees with greatly increased diversity
-Improved cliffs

Living World:
-Animal herds and migrations
-Worldwide live ship traffic
-Accurate live air traffic (models, liveries)
-Improved vehicle traffic

Dynamic World:
-Full seasons
-Aurora Borealis / Aurora Australis
-Tornados
-Storms

Will Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 have improved loading times?

One of the biggest priorities for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is to improve the simulator’s data management. One of the major changes to the simulator’s architecture being made is using Cloud streaming to help ensure that the client becomes thin. When users load into the sim, only the textures, meshes, and map data that they need will be downloaded to avoid unnecessary bandwidth and disk space usage

Well, that will make loading times as I define them worse.

I rather cache everything in advance.

Unless, like in MSFS2020, the downloader uses 3D and keeps the graphics card at high power while you are not even playing...

I would think so too. In minecraft, I use a chunk pre-generator to build the chunks first so when I play the machine doens't have to build them and load them. They are just there.

Caching would make sense to me...but what do I know?

I'm confused. How does streaming data from the internet improves loading times over having it locally? Unless by streaming they don't mean textures and geometry, but the game will run on the cloud and you're just streaming it?

From my understanding, Flight Simulator 2020 from the get go used asset streaming, the total games was like 2 petabytes for the whole planet:
https://www.geekwire.com/2019/microsoft-flight-simulator-cloud/

The goal being one day to have pretty much 1:1 of most of the world, which would not fit on an XboxS, it is a bit bizarelly writing but I think the previous one could go to 1GB of data usage per hour of play despite a good sized 150gig local install ? Maybe this is about reducing both with better streaming ?

There are higher detailed areas, and those can be downloaded beforehand. I believe you can also choose quality level. But most of the world is not hand crafted in high detail, and that is streamed. DCS has high detailed maps, though they are not connected, and detail on those even varies even though there is no streaming. So even without streaming that is how it always worked. Areas that people will use the most get the most detail, and less important areas get less detail. It is a mix of time/money and performance/file size. A high detailed map for a relatively small area can easily get to 50-80GB. Airliners fly further than fighters, so MS Flight Simulator needs even larger playable areas. Which is why the whole world is modeled, and why a lot of it needs to be streamed.

Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator Jorge Neumann talks about the tech behind MSFS 2020, and some astonishing-sounding features coming in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

in MSFS 2024, you're no longer limited to experiencing the Earth's "digital twin" from the skies alone: "You can now exit the plane, walk around, in 2024. You can literally walk your favorite mountain path to your favorite hut in the mountains. Sit on the lake. See the sunset. It is truly a digital twin you can absorb"...

Cool! Yes it looks like the "gaming" part will be expanded to include more than just flying. Rescue people and so on. Maybe go from control tower and embark your plane? :) There is already a camping add-on which looks awesome and you can build your camping site. In 2024 you can even walk around on the camping site then I assume :)

Ideal RAM: 64GB!

Those are obviously pulled out of thin air. But it is good to know that they still target systems that old.

Could be driven by the need to be able to run on a SeriesS, ram aside the recommand specs seem quite ~XboxX ballpark (from harddrive space, too gpu and cpu power) and the minimum a bit Series S type of ballpark

The addon situation needs to be fairly seamless. Otherwise it will cost developers a lot to update, which likely means update fees or addons that won't get ported over to the new game. Considering the long development time of addons and their cost I don't think a new release every 4 years is a good idea. IMO something like DCS, where the basic platform is free, and they monetize it through quality in house addons (as well as the 3rd party) would be better.

When asked why there isn't even an option to install all the map data locally: "There's just too much data to install locally, you'd need a lot of expensive drives to store it" Microsoft says to a community of die-hard fans who spend upwards of 100K on Flight sim setups.

That statement would be more impressive if it contained one of those "number" things.

It was a made up quote, parody.

But I would imagine the total dataset of the earth would be in the tens of terabytes. Not insurmountable.
