so some update in windows 11 is causing massive load times for VLC. Turns out windows defender is quarantining it's pluging cache, so actually it's probably breaking more than just VLC.

Windows defender is trash. Way too often it just attacks perfectly not infected software, and it can sometimes drive me nuts.

So are you actually having an issue with VLC on your computer or did you just get sucked into a clickbait video and took what the guy had to say as gospel? These "content creators" literally make their money by exaggerating or misrepresenting issues that don't really exist in practice. I'm using the latest version of Windows 11 on all of my computers, with Windows Defender enabled, and having zero issues with VLC.

You linked two "jump on the bandwagon" articles from more places that make money from that type of content, that all reference the same post on X, and one forum post from a year and a half ago which may or may not even be related. I can believe that there are people having occasional issues with VLC, and I can even believe that in some cases those issues might be "caused" by Windows Defender. What I still haven't seen is any proof that this is an actual widespread issue.

It’s not just Windows Defender breaking things, I use Sentinel One, and it’s been flagging on a bunch of seemingly random things.

Most annoying.

I have the same problem with file explorer, Potplayer, and two different Microsoft apps to open images-----on two different laptops.

However, my gaming ITX desktop is fine with all those apps. But....OBS takes similarly forever to load.

Considering that MS recently patched windows to allow it to use more CPU resources while launching apps: I think they absolutely know there are issues. And have tried to bandaid it until.....they actually fix it someday.

Yep, which is why getting worked up over AV issues and making an article is stupid. Like I get being ANNOYED, but it isn't a conspiracy. We use Sophos at work (ugh) and there have been a few times over the years where an update caused it to go nuts over a system file and cause issues on computers. It is annoying as fuck, and a reason I recommend a different virus scanner, but it was not a conspiracy, just a malfunction. They updated the definitions and it stopped, they weren't trying to "destroy Windows" or something like that.

Even really good virus scanners have false positives once and awhile. I use ESET and I've been real happy. Both my experience and empirical testing says it is one of the best. However I've still had it mis-flag shit on a couple occasions. The latest one was Light Illusion ColorSpace. It uses some very strange compression that pisses ESET off. No problem, that's a bug, not a conspiracy.

If MS banned VLC from running on Windows period and said some bullshit like "This tool is used for media piracy therefore cannot be run" then yes, THAT'S a story, THAT'S something to get outraged about. However a virus scanner having a transient issue? That's a complete non-story. It's the kind of thing you bitch to a friend about "Fucking defender update ate VLC. How obnoxious," not something you make a story about and say it means people should uninstall Windows 11.

Yeah unless the AV issue is of the 2024 CroudStrike level, flag it as a false positive, sit down, have a coffee, it will resolve itself shortly.
 
VLC loads just fine, Defender on.

Not saying no issues might exist BUT, maybe a nothingburger, clickybaity headlines get the views.
