Micro Center adding four new stores

THEY'RE CLOSING DOWN SANTA CLARA THOUGH!!!!! AHHHHH!!!! This is horrible!

yeah, I got the email on July 27th that said they were closing it on July 23rd. way to go MC. Oh well... guess I still have Fry's in the area..

fry's in terms of price is hardly an alternative. I used to go there to get good deals, haven't gotten a good deal in years

I'm not defending Fry's here by any means, but I noticed a little while ago they started advertising online price matching. I've read that it's a big hassle though.

Has anyone tried to get Microcenter's processor prices matched at Fry's since the started this online price matching?

Wtb a MC in syracuse NY we have just done some stupid $50 million exspansion on our mall here would love an mc to help fill it

Too bad about Santa Clara. Was looking to get a CPU/motherboard upgrade, looks like that won't happen.

I heard about a recent experience from a friend about trying to take fry's up on that price match offer. like you said, hassle...

I really don't understand how microcenter is able to be so cheap for a brick and mortar. Today I just bought 2x Seagate 2TB 7200RPM 64MB drives for $109 each. They have DVD drives for $15. I bought 3 just to make my DVD to server project go much quicker.

4hr drive for me... But I have a Brother in Law with one right down the road!

Shutting down the one over by me in the Silicon Valley for this? :(

Hows about over the ma border in NH so i can avoid sales and finally get in on these killer cpu deals

Having worked for an electronics retailer, some of the "tricks" they use would be ordering large quantities of a product with a no return contract, or at least a very low percentage that can be returned. I was fairly heavily involved with Apple at the time, and so where I worked they had a 2% return rate with Apple. That covered iPods, iPads, iPhones, and Macs. Only 2% of the stuff could be returned to Apple for a refund if it was defective, and that was eaten up almost instantly by the iDevices.

If you see open box units on a store shelf, odds are it's because of something like this. They've reached the quota or the quota is zero so even selling it at a significant loss in-store is better than pennies on the dollar at auction to places that bid on pallets worth of the stuff, and usually buy them for the component parts.

And I'm right there with everyone else in the Bay Area upset that they close down the Santa Clara store but then go and open more elsewhere?! Them's fightin' words!

TigerDirect needs more competition in Miami, bring me some Microcenter NOW! Fuck hhgreg and best buy, they dont even sell components!

I've never even been to a Microcenter. The closest one to me is about 5 hrs away in Houston. I could go there, but then I'd be in Houston.

WTB decent computer store south of the Mason-Dixon.

we should all team up and start our own retailer.

LOL

Just a guess here, but their processors are not "online sales" they're advertisements for in-store prices and since there is now no store within their radius (whatever miles that was) they may not honor any price match.

Yay Queens. Not super neccessary for me since I'm like a 15 minute drive to the Westbury store as it is and traffic is probably worse in Queens but always good to have more MCs since a lot of good deals are always out of stock at the Westbury store (people in the area really pounce on the deals) and driving to Yonkers was never worth it because of the tolls.

I almost fell outta my chair when I saw Wisconsin on the list. Hell friggin yes!!!

Now they just need to say where in wisconsin

How do we not have more than 2 in California? We have a gdp larger than France

Edit: okay, maybe not larger, but about the same.

I'm glad that they are adding one to NYC even though the Yonkers one was not that much of a hassle to get to. This will make for a quicker trip & I'll be less reliant on Newegg & Tigerdirect.

I had to take the MTA to MC from Queens, almost 3 hours to get there. Not a hassle if you have a car.

My closest one is 10 hours away.

We need one in South FL. :(

Where I live is only slightly better. The nearest MC from here is only a scant 8 hour drive from here.
The only B&M stores around here that even hint at offering tech related items include the office supply stores (office depot, office max, staples), worst buy, wal-mart, and the over priced mom & pop type places. :(

On one hand, I would love to have a MC near here, but on the other hand, I fear that if they expand too quickly, they would turn into another worst buy or comp ussr. Meaning their prices would then go through the roof and customer service would take a nosedive.
I prefer they keep their prices fairly low and keep providing decent customer service even if it means I won't see a store near me in the near future. We certainly don't need another crappy big box store like worst buy.

I wonder what their new format will be like? There is one in St. Louis Park, MN which is basically in the middle of the Twin Cities metro area. I still think they could open up more in the twin cities.

For the time being I'd rather have them add a 2nd floor to the existing one and have even more products though. Then stay open to midnight or 1am for sales and have one armed security guard and/or make the checkout person or persons also carry. After 9pm or 10pm you are on your own for getting help, maybe have one floater though. So you'd just get the builder type people in there. When your there you can always check online at Newegg or Amazon for reviews of products, like I always do and then just buy at Micro Center. Even though 12-15 miles away or so, figured spent the time and gas so might as well get it through MC if I'm there.

It would be nice if the online CPU prices would just be a little bit higher than they are now in the store for other people though.

I agree that if they expand too quickly that it can get away from them and then they might have over extended themselves and start jacking up prices or making the customer service worse (less training). Seems like it's the ONLY store I've ever been to when talking about computer parts, that the people actually might know more than you.

From Micro Center's Facebook page:

We are very pleased to announce plans to add 4 new next-generation Micro Center stores in the next 18 months or so, and wanted our Facebook fans to be among the first to know! These new stores in Maryland, New York and Wisconsin, and more that are to follow represent the largest expansion in the history of our business, which currently operates 23 stores nationwide. We want to introduce our shopping experience to a whole new group of customers. Competitive pricing, a huge selection and associates that know what they are talking about are what we think our customers deserve. The first of these stores is in the Baltimore area, it will be 40,000 sq. ft. and is slated to open in November this year, followed by a 60,000 sq. ft. store in Queens, New York in mid 2013. Other stores, all part of our next-generation format will continue to open in late 2013 and on. We will keep you posted on how we’re doing. In the mean time, tell all your friends that live in these areas!

Yes! I mean I wasn't really complaining about the Westbury, NY location since it was 5 min from my office in Hicksville and about a 15 min drive from my place in Queens but now that they're going to open another one in Queens it's going to be awesome to have 2 Microcenters within a 15 mile radius of me LOL. :p :p :p

YES!!! FUCKING WISCONSIN, FINALLY!!!

I just hope it's in Madison, so I don't have to drive to the shithole in the east.

Too many vamprires.

So thats why they are closing the ONLY microcenter in the bay area? Seriously... the tech hub of the world is losing all microcenters...

I join the huddled masses yearning to breath recycled air at microcenter to get good proc/MB deals...

This is a sad sad thing :(

haha same with me where i live, use to be CompUSA and they had kick ass deals once in a while that blown me away, no wonder they shut down. so it's been same with me for computer parts (either drive 10 hour round trip or shop at wostbuy)

Yea I live in OP there isn't shit around here tech wise. Everything shipped instead...

THEY'RE CLOSING DOWN SANTA CLARA THOUGH!!!!! AHHHHH!!!! This is horrible!

Jeez, I just rediscovered Micro Center too. However there are LOTS of empty retail store spaces around the Silicon Valley; am sure they'll pop up again somewhere soon.

Being in the Annapolis area, I still think it'll be easier for me to take the horrible Beltway to Rockville as opposed to driving through Baltimore, as the MC is actually going to be north of Baltimore in Towson, MD.

Regardless, this is very good news.
