Metro 2039

I started Metro on my 2080 RTX then played the Enchanced version due to no crashes but never finished it.
 
I would actually prefer this one to be more linear like the first two.

I too would like that but also like the hub design of Exodus. The indoor areas don't need to be linear in that there is 1 path, they can design a mission based game that offers two different approaches. But I would like to see a mix of the indoor and outdoor. People think linear has to be on rails like the traditional CoD game or it has to be Ubisoft style open world with dozens of garbage grade side quests. But there is always that good mixture like Crysis 1. That was mission based but you could hijack a vehicle, move in stealthy, or go for an open approach head on.
 
Doesn't look bad I bet RTX will be better rather than tacked on like Exodus.
Exodus EE essentially rebuilt the entire game to build it around all the additional ray tracing effects. So def wouldn't call it "tacked on".. maybe the original game though.

Metro Exodus EE has been one of those game I've enjoyed returning to after upgrading my cards. I still need to finish the DLCs for it too. The original game was pretty hard on my 2080 at the time running with RT enabled. But playing EE maxed out on my next 3080 12GB was not an issue, and now on my 5080 I can get crazy-high performance while maxed out, hah. The coolest part of the EE game though was that it actually ran faster than the original game while enabling much more RT effects and light bounces throughout the game.

Yeah, kinda same here. If only just to shorten the time required to play with the limited amount of time I have to play now. But I def have enjoyed all of the Metro games and will play the next one regardless. I really enjoyed Exodus, but not sure I'd place it above 2033 or Last Light in terms of overall enjoyment. They're all pretty close though.

I appreciated this series ability to blend survival with needing the gas masks and not making it a tedious chore. Same with the flashlight charging. I agree with you that Exodus was the weaker of the three but if it was a standalone game it would still be in high regard.

Still annoyed on my first play through of Exodus I accidentally hit a good guy in the forest and caused me to get the bad ending. Looking forward to 2039.
 
This series has always been a watered-down Stalker experience. If you're into a linear story with a decent game production (4A to their credit doesn't create complete jank), I guess this is your jam. Metro always felt like a console game first and foremost, with PC as an after thought.

Now that I've got Stalker 2, my interest in this series has waned even more.

It never was meant to be a STALKER like game. It was always supposed to be story driven. The engines have been well designed with PC in mind. The core GSC developers left over payment disputes and because they wanted a more focused design and a better engine. STALKER clearly had signs of poor direction and of course both the first and 2nd iteration of the engine (the one that shipped with SoC) were buggy. The game was rushed out the door and it shows.

Metro has some basic survival aspects without dumbing them down into a hold E to collect this item 1000+ times during a play through which is what most games do. It is a shooter, and that is what makes it great. Exodus veered a bit too much into scavenging so I hope that is toned down a bit in this. STALKER 2 in comparison jumped off the deep end, with a bunch of lame mechanics designed to make a 50 hour game into an 80 game because you have to hold W for an extra 20-30 more hours than necessary. The combat encounters are very underdeveloped and becomes more apparent the more time you play. As such they start to feel like an annoyance on your "hold W" journeys. The Metro games have better set ups in most cases, and the combat flow is much smoother. Though the AI is still hit and miss in the Metro games just like STALKER 2.

STALKER SoC was clearly rushed, just replay the Red Forest map. It was essentially tacked on with little to nothing to do, and you were so overfilled with ammunition and whatnot you would toss it way. The only game that felt right out of the box was CoP. STALKER 2 didn't really have good exploration either, largely empty places with little going on and locked buildings. Even Pripyat is largely a semi linear map with most areas fenced off to the point you can only traverse in a straight line. Even one of the paths to the area around Juniper is fenced off from Pripyat. The same NPCs spawning in the same manner, with the same poorly done combat encounters over and over again. It does not offer much in terms of dynamic encounters, they all play out the same 90% of the time. The combat is disappointingly shallow. Spawning a few random guys in a field does not make for an interesting fight or battle space, and that is 90% of the combat in STALKER 2. It is one of the biggest pitfalls of open world design and STALKER 2's devs fell right into it. Bland, repeating mini combat encounters devoid of any semblance of a battle or fight. The few times they try and make a mission with some type of objective of possible approach it ends up being oddly locked off, with enemies spawning quite literally out of thin air in front of you, as seen in the Duga mission.

The long walk times did not add anything useful either. It is not inherently hard to press the W key. The "difficultly" of STALKER to is pressing/holding the W key, and then walking up to corpses and pressing E, holding W to walk to a trader to sell them. It does the whole survival aspect worse than the Metro games. You aren't picking up things to survive, you're picking up things to sell so you can afford to use a different weapon or buy some gear. In Metro you pick up a gas mask filter to be able to get from point A to B without dying or being injured, and you swap a broken gas mask so you can see without cracks in it. In STALKER 2 it just comes down to an artificial economy that has nothing to do with survival, but rather padding game length. You spend 2 minutes shooting zombies, 20 minutes grabbing and selling their loot.

The AI in STALKER 2 is also dumber than STALKER SoC, possibly without mods. Far Cry 2 has more dynamic NPCs with limping and whatnot. Once the atmosphere wears off in STALKER 2 you realize how shallow the core systems are, especially the combat.

Which is why I hope the next Metro game stays true to its roots, and is centered around an interesting story, combat, and survival aspects that matter and aren't a gimmick to pad game hour length.
 
was there a 3rd book released? I know the games are based on books.
 
The cinamatic stuff was awesome. The in-game graphics look pretty good but it's hard to judge based on a youtube video.
 
Yeah, looks awesome so far. Can't wait for it to inevitably choke out my 5080 prolly like previous games did to my cards at the time. But at least they're not running UE5 still.
 
Yeah, there are 3 books - Metro 2033, 2034, and 2035. Not really directly related to the games story-wise, though.

2033 and Last Light followed the novels somewhat, IIRC, but Exodus splintered into completely different direction versus the novel. Very different end to the Artyoms story. Nothing to do with 2035 really.

I hope this one leans more into the super natural aspects that were very apparent in the first game and especially the first novel. It was all so fascinating but as Dark Ones got destroyed (mostly anyway) that all got dropped and things got more mundane (not that they are bad, far from it) in the other novels. The new trailer gives me hope that the Dark Ones have returned in force. 👌

It might. If you want a game that leans more into that and have a VR head set look into Metro Awakening. It leans more into that, and is probably the best VR shooter overall.

Oh shoot, I had completely forgotten about that game, I have not even purchased it. Got to check it out before this one releases.
 
It's nice to see a game aimed at adults with a custom engine that looks to be pushing computer technology to the brink. I've always preferred stalker but I own all of the metro games as well and look forward to giving this one a shot. It looks solid so far.
