Metallica has always changed up their set-list to make sure that they never play the exact same set of songs at a live performance. But now we know that they use digital music services like Spotify to fine tune their set-list for live performances by analyzing data on the most popular tracks on a city-by-city basis. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek explained how the band uses their service for song choice during an earnings call.

"You have an artist like Metallica, who changes their setlist on a city-by-city basis just by looking at Spotify data to see, which the most popular songs happened to be in that city," Ek said. "We’ve never before been at a place in time where you could make as many informed decisions and understand your audience as well as we can do now as an artist."

Metallica died and became a product when Cliff Burton died. Who even cares now?

Cliff Burton was the music Metallica is based on, and they've been trying to maintain what he taught them, but they're incapable of it. Go to bed guys, you're an iPod making an ass of itself.

Both times I saw GnR on the reunion tour "Alice in Chains" opened. The new guy/kid is actually amazing and sounds exactly like Staley. The first time he performed with the band Layne's mother was in the crowd, cried afterwards, and gave her approval for them to tour.

Saw Metallica at USBank stadium. It was one of the worst rock shows I have ever seen. They gave no care to the sound, just wanted to be as loud as they could, which they achieved as I guess it was heard over a mile away. I was sitting front stage. I'm pretty sure my ears are still ringing 2 years after. BUT seeing One live was necessary and worth it (even though Hetfield literally fucked up an entire verse and had to admit it mid song he forgot the lyrics - but he's old and a douchebag so I wasn't surprised ((which I'm probably going to be sued for now)) (((dammit))) ).

No. They aren't. Sorry. See above.

And edit: Anything past the Black Album is pure commercial garbage as well so they haven't been rocking in decades.

This is all that needs to be said as it is the truth. I grew up on Kill em All however once Cliff passed they sucked on albums and much worse live. New Kids on the Block put on a better stage show than metallica. This band has been the most dissappointing ever

I love when I see lots of people saying stupid stuff like this. What makes any product at all successful? When MANY people like it and are willing to pay for it, not just a small minority, of course you might say that they're sellouts but they're laughing all the way to the bank because their teams of managers, producers, marketers etc. told them that evolving their music would be a good idea for their continued success to reach a broader audience.

Neat concept... too bad it was Lars talking about it. I put my prejudice aside and listened to the whole thing. Lars still sounds as douchy as he did back when he was busy trying to take down Napster.

The black album is by far their most commercial, their most marketed, their most overproduced. It was the most vanilla pop-metal album, possibly in all human history. At the very least it was the softest candy-metal since the early eighties.

It was also a great album, pretending the things you don't like are all "commercial" makes you a hipster. Don't be that guy.

I think the truth is that after the Black Album they were so huge that they started talking too much and everyone realised these are douchy "artistes". Metallica was never Pantera or Anthrax, they had a whole different attitude.

They "were" great. Now it's the senior citizens tour and they sound nothing like the good old days. OT: I think this is a great idea. Several concerts I've been to recently they poll on social media to see what everyone wants to hear before they play and make it their set list. Everyone wins!

Most people probably know the lyrics to a thousand songs if they heard it. We could probably sing at least a hundred from memory. How the hell do you forget the words to your own music? Alzheimers? Not caring anymore?

Agreed with William DuVall. First time I heard "Check My Brain" on the radio it was like I was back in 1992. Saw them live in concert and William sounded exactly like Layne during their performance of "Dam That River." And he's no kid: William DuVall is 50 years old. He was 39 when he joined the band in 2006. AIC finally has a new album coming out next month.
Better than the record company deciding, but it still boils down to the popular regurgitated shit due to the normies. It's why I avoid seeing Disturbed anymore unless they're part of a larger festival that I didn't go to to see them.

Which just shows, how a large group of morons can be happy with mediocre music. I just chose to listen to non-commercialized crap, which apparently makes me a minority. So you have joined a crowd of oblivious lemmings...yay...And just to add, Ulrich couldn't keep time with a fucking clock......

RIP Cliff, but Metallica didn't peak until Justice. I saw them twice and both times the audio was shit. At one show all I could only hear were drums and base. Lars is a dick. Once they got all fucked up on drugs it was over. Still, they gave us some of the best metal eva.

I dunno, I'd say Puppets was their best album, but everything before the Black Album was pretty legendary. The Black Album was their transition into the mainstream...but still a good album. Everything went to shit after that.

Not really. They stopped being a metal band some years back. Wish I could embed the specific video where they said on an interview they were "more of a pop band now". Fuck these guys. They havent released a good album since "And Justice For All"!

^^^^Or so many other great bands... but Master, And Justice, and Ride the Lightning were all fantastic albums that trade a few blows with them.

Holy smokes. I had no idea he was that old. He's so baby faced! Nutshell is one of my all time favorite songs and we walked in late at the 2nd of the Vegas shows to them just starting it - and from Staley to him, it sounded like the original recording. It was kinda heartbreaking. Second time was at Soldier field so it was more of a spectacle than whatever intimacy you can claim an arena provides.

T-Mobile Arena does have amazing sound too if you ever get a chance to see a show down there.

I'm sorry I wanted to vomit 2 minutes into the 6 minutes they needed to keep a terrible song going. How are you going to compare that to when they were good?

I'm sure it's been posted in this thread, but seriously? That cesspool of sound vs this?

Sorry had to add this too:

I don't like the Black Album. But understand why some would. I probably could have stated that the Black Album was the start of their downfall instead the last good album... But I don't feel that it is terrible music like nearly everything that followed.

Worst rock show I may have ever seen. I saw it with a number of friends who are fans enough to even like some of their newer garbage and they all agreed it was horribly managed and performed. When was the last time you saw them? Sorry should state that was August 2016 for the kickoff concert to the 1billion stadium in Minneapolis.
