That seems like a very early placeholder for something that we aren't expecting until October.

Maybe it's coming earlier than everyone thought?

Preorder page now live. Delivery October 11

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C8VKH1ZH

You could get it on meta's website when the event started earlier today.

I'm holding off for now as a Quest Pro user. It looks like a no brainer upgrade from the Q2 though.

IMO mixed reality is the biggest feature. Mixed reality isn't usable for anything serious on their preivous headsets and the Q3 looks like it does it really well which opens up a whole ton of cool things in games and non-game uses.

As an Amazon Associate, HardForum may earn from qualifying purchases.
I always upgrade the head strap. I see this time they are offering the elite strap from the pre-order page.

I wonder if I should wait to upgrade the strap or see what else is made. I know I will upgrade it eventually. I do not believe I need the battery.

I ordered the strap and battery. Said F it. $128 is a drop in the bucket in the computer world.

Wondering whether sharpness and resolution will be good enough to read the instruments in DCS...

Seems like it's a decent upgrade over the Quest 2. Better performance, lighter, pancake lenses and dual screen lcd. As well as having more features like MR.

Hmm, now do I upgrade and if upgrade should I go with the Quest Pro or the Quest 3?

Oh, Pre-orders get Asgard's Wrath 2 for free.

Probably Q3. The only reason to get a Q Pro would be for face and eye tracking. Almost everything else is better on the Q3.

Add to that that the FoV has been upgraded too, from 90 to 110 horizontal, I pre ordered my Q3. Glad they didn't up the resolution too much, or even my 4090 wouldn't be enough to drive it haha.

Eye tracking doesn't work with PCVR the way the Quest streams, so for that purpose it is moot.

What is the point of pre ordering? You can just walk in a store and pick this up before it arrives at your house from the pre order anyway.

I don't have the option of a walking in a store here no. Meanwhile I can have it delivered at my door on release day with no shipping cost if I pre-order (so I just did). It's amazon so I still get free return if I don't like it.

My main hope for this headset is improved comfort, and I hope the fan is quieter too, 120hz mode on Q2 is tiring for me because of the fan noise, especially in summer. Display will be much improved and that's of course nice but driving the Q2 at native resolution with a 4090 was already not trivial in some games so it's not what I'm most interested in when it comes to VR, unless DLSS/foveated rendering become more widespread.

Yeah, I cannot pick one up here in the Netherlands anywhere at all and if you online order anything in the Netherlands, you are allowed to return it for a full refund within 14 days by law. Add to that, you get Asgarth's Wrath 2 for free and I love the improvements in pancake lenses, the upgraded FoV and more comfortable visor, pre ordered it!

Asgard's Wrath 2 will be included for the next 4 months so its not just an initial pre order thing.

The Quest 3 does seem like a decent upgrade over the Quest 2, with a number of improvements, so I decided to try

Maybe I am interpreting your answer incorrectly, but if that is what you got from my reply, I think you are ignoring a few other and way more important aspects of my answer ;) AW2 is just a nice bonus and incentivizes to get it early for others. The other reasons are the main reason for me to pre-order it.

I wasn't ignoring anything else you said. All I was doing was pointing out the game bundle is not just on the initial pre-orders. I'm going to wait on in-depth reviews just to make sure something unexpected doesn't show up with these new headsets. I'll probably grab one in November and I already have a co-worker that says he'll buy my Quest 2 when I upgrade.

Odd. My preorder got cancelled.

I don’t know why. I paid via PayPal and I got a receipt that it when through Meta and PayPal.

Anyone here get a Quest 3? Surprised that nobody is talking about it yet.
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Best Buy had stacks of the Quest 3 when I picked up mine.

I got mine yesterday and I've found the picture quality mind blowing coming from Q2. Played some sims on it. Clarity is incredible, text looks crisp and all. Drove it at max res with a 4090 (using cable for now, 500mb bit rate) which is barely higher than Q2, but the lenses are just incredibly better - and ipd adjustment is very helpful, it was a bit off for me in Q2 (so pancake + ipd are 2 factors combined to help me here).

I'm a bit sick so my opinion of comfort and fit is a bit biased atm since my head is hurting a bit and all. I actually think it's much better than Q2 but... the default strap still sucks, so even though I got my glasses inside the headset fine (progress, coming from Q2) I could not get a nice fit on my head. It hurt and wasn't stable. Trying the Elite strap tomorrow.
Instead of useless gimmicky AR and whatnot, why don't they invest big bucks into making VR super comfortable for the masses? I bet that would help with adoption and retention more than anything else. Make people want to put that thing on their head for hours every day goddammit.

The sound quality is still garbage compared to any decent speakers or headphones, and the fan is more annoying to me than in the Q2 because it's revving up and down constantly during use, sometimes it seems even to turn off completely. But only for a few seconds. It's not loud, but I cannot stand fans that rev up and down rapidly and frequently.

Comfort is subjective, but I agree with you. I will wait until there are more 3rd party options before getting a new head strap. Thats why I didn’t get the elite strap. I wont be wearing the thing for hours at a time, only because I do not have that kind of time to dedicate to it. Thats just me though.

The sound and fan I can deal with if I use better noise isolating (not canceling) headphones. I agree, a fan that constantly changes pitch is annoying.

I bought the Quest 3 for the image quality increase. The lenses are huge improvement, but all the smaller improvements really add up as well. That is what I am hoping for. I will pick mine up from Best Buy on Friday. I pre-ordered, but am out of town.

Really tempted to pick this up. I have a Quest 2 with a dozen or so games but have logged a grand total of ~3 lifetime hours. Just something about the clunkiness and visuals that bother me enough to avoid using it altogether. Really wonder if the Quest 3 improvements are enough to cross me into the "want to play" attitude as the games I have do seem fun.

Exactly my thoughts and situation. I’m willing to try it out to see if the visuals are that much better.

I’m kinda glad that I bought it from best buy so if it doesn’t satisfy, it’s going back. From all the reviews, it seems that it’ll satisfy.

The software that Meta makes for these things, can you install it to drives other than C: by now?

When I got my original quest it didn't offer anything but C:. Which isn't good for me, my C: drive is deliberately small.

If it does not change you can run the software in the command line with the /drive:F

I do not have particularly found memory of the back in the days experience of the original dev kit, nothing that terrible but the above, what did seem to me like being much easier to buy game on their marketplace versus elsewhere to play them with their kit and so on.... To be fair I was doing more not supposed to do with it stuff like play games than dev on it.

The apps/games you can install anywhere, but the Oculus app itself (3.4GB) installs automatically to C so you'd need to cheese that with command line I guess. But surely you can live with one single 3-4GB app on C? That one isn't gonna grow too much either. Just remember to change the default App install path setting before downloading anything through the Oculus app.

Not really. Already have too many force-installed 3-4 GB apps on C:. My C: partition is as small as possible for easy and fast backup.

I picked up a Q3 and immediately remembered how bad the stock occulus headstraps suck lmao....yea its better than the Q2 stock headstrap but that aint sayin much! Super dissapointed that I cannot reuse my Q2 Elite + battery strap or my M2 Bobo strap.....was going to wait for the M3 bobo but broke down today and got the elite which I paired with a New Zealand Lamb wool headstrap brace. I just sold my Quest 2 256 + elite battery strap for less than what I just paid for the quest 3 elite strap lmao and do not regret the decision one bit.....this is the most comfortable VR experience I have ever had.

I have only tested standalone games so far, but it is a considerable improvement over Q2....the sweet spot is so dang big, what she said, and these are the best pancakes yet! In comparison to Pico 4, its no contest the quest 3 crushes it IMHO.

Mixed reality is a game changer....having the UFO come crashing thru my ceiling and then land on my Chihuahahahahaha chilling on the couch was pretty epic! Dog had no idea it just got scorched! I have been developing a game for mobile phones and am so impressed with MR on the Q3 that I want to remaster my game in MR for the Q3 after I finish mobile development.....MR is that dang cool!

The only negative I can say is the black level / contrast is trash, but we all know that about LCD and not much they can do about it at this price point.

All things considered, for me, the quest 3 is the best all around VR headset on the market right now....it simply does the most things right and its my new favorite :)

I highly recommend the Q3, but I am not a doctor and do not play one one TV and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn express last night either.

Little update: after playing with the face cover and the eye relief I've figured out what I was doing wrong (had to remove the faceplate to adjust the eye relief properly, found out thanks to a random youtuber) and it's definitely a huge comfort improvement now, even with big face/ glasses and default strap it's actually fine and painless. Still I'm getting the elite strap today as that is usually way better and I want to try.

I still need to figure out what IEMs or headphones I want to use with it since I'm very picky about audio stuff but other VR headsets don't really do things any better so that's ok. I mean the old Rift and Index had decent headphones but they were very open, not blocking any sounds from coming in or leaking out, so that would not have helped either.

I got the Elite strap without battery as that version is out of stock in Europe but I think that's ok: I do a lot of wired VR and I can easily add a third party battery if/when I need.

LCD black levels are annoying when you're sitting behind an OLED monitor every day but yeah, for now it is what it is. Again other VR headsets are not faring much better, those using OLED have severe limitations and the LCDs in the Quest are best in class when it comes to motion clarity as Chief from blurbusters explained. So that's something!

What kind of backup setting are you using for this to be a problem? It's only going to make a difference in time for one backup.

I can understand why people might not want to install things on their C: drive because of Space issues. But for easy and fast backup? Wut??

Are the lenses similar to the Q2? I got some of those custom Rx lenses (I wear glasses) that clip on to my Q2 and wonder if I can swap them over to the Q3 or will I have to get a new set meant for the Q3

What is this talk about installing on “c?” What does it accomplish?

I’ll find out Friday or this weekend.

No, I also wear prescription glasses. I ordered some lens inserts from Zenni but they still have not shipped yet. I use dork glasses from VR lab as a stop gap to get me thru
