max safe load temp for C2D cpus..

Maximum safe temp ~70C

That is a maximum though, you should be well below that. You should be fine running below 63C 24/7.

The chip throttles itself back at 85C and you don't want to be anywhere near that.
 
The safe core temp is below 85C.

The desirable temp to stay below is a matter of opinion. I believe 75C (on the hottest of days under heavy load ie using TAT) to allow 10C headroom.
 
My processor actually hits 80C on full-load Orthos Blend using Coretemp and it has run stably for 10+ hours doing so. These chips can definitely take the heat. Fortunately I mostly use single-threaded programs (eg. games) so my regular full-load temps are much lower, in the low 60's.
 
I wish there was some definitive information about this. My 6600 is hitting 65 ish according to coretemp when running orthos. That is at 3.3ghz, 1.3 vcore, using a scythe ninja. I'm wondering if my Ninja isn't seated properly.....

That temp is way high. You should consider using Speed Fan software to set up your cooling fans.

I have been benching My E6400 at 8x452=3616 running SP2004 x2 procesors at 100% for one hour right now and my temperature is held under 55C by the Zalman 9700 and (10 120mm case fan. I have it set so the Zalman and the case fan run at 50% speed until the CPU hits 55C.

The only thing about Speed Fan is it takes a little getting used to and some trial and error to get the settings correct.

The temperature max for the E6400 is 61.4C

You are taking your temps with core temp, right? Or are you using speedfan?

I use core temp but I have speed fan set up to match the readings from coretemp (since that is what is controlling the cooling fans so I want the 2 readings to match) Speed fan is adjustable.

Tjunction (core temp) is 85C max
Tcase is 61.4 max

Coretemp, TAT show Tjunction readings not Tcase. Most motherboard software usually show tcase readings, which is always lower than "core" temp for obvious reasons.



Please read carefully as i am a tad tired of seeing people mislead others with there lack of understanding over this issue. Max safe "core" temp is 85C, but you probably want to stay below 75C to allow headroom ( TAT for example).
 
Then go ahead try and run your CPU at 85C core temp for 24 hours @ 100% CPU on Orthos and we'll find out which one of us is the clueless one LOL

I ran my 6400 for 2.5 hours on orthos and it hit a max of 68 deg celcius on stock cooling. Oc'ed to 3.2 ghz. I used TAT, Speed fan, and Core temp to verify.

1.425 vcore on P5B-3E
Using Scythe Infinity with Antec 2000rpm fan at fullspeed

I get idle 42-44c
and Load on Orthos 53-56c

are these good?
 
Wow all of your temps are extremely high. I never break 35 degrees on my e6300



You really need to check into getting accurate temp readings, using coretemp, because on air, there is no way you are running 35c max load temps....

First of all friend I am not pissed I am laughing and smiling like I always am because I enjoy being here and discussing this stuff with other enthusiasts. Do try to get along with other people here if you can and let's keep it cordial OK? Flaming is not allowed here. Let me point out something my friend the temperature at which thermal protection cuts in at the very last moment and saves the silicon from from destruction is not the "safe operating temperature" for the processor if your definition of safe for a computer includes "the CPU processes instructions correctly". Again if you still think 85C or 84C is a safe temperature to operate your Core 2 Duo then by all means go ahead and try to operate it at that high temperature. Long before that last ditch temperature reached any software you care to run is going to be getting errors. If you think the opposite then it is easy for you to show the world, just run your C2D for a sustained 84C for 4 hours or more and if you can run Orthos at that infernal core temp then I will be the first to recognize your finding.
 
i wonder why TAT always shows my core temp as CPU0: 50C and CPU1: 48C during idle...while on the other hand, probe 2 is showing 40C....i wonder why the big difference in temp?

Zalman CNPS7700-Cu (all copper)
Asus 7950GT
OCZ 2gb platinums

why are my temps so high? i have tried re-seating the HSF but its the same....however the actual HSF and the CPU is like room temp when touched.

i used ceramique at first and then switched back to AS5 because i thought it wasnt cutting it....but it ended up to be the same.

You clearly mistook Tcase(61.4C) for Tjunction(85C) in your original post, so you were WRONG!. Now you are trying to cover that error with loads and loads of crap.

Intel set Tjunction at 85C so Intel disagrees with you!

Maybe you should contact Intel and explain that they are doing it all wrong and they need to lower Tjunction.

I also don't recommend anyone run a processor at 84C, see my orginal post. 75C(max Tjunction under heavy load, hottest day) is fine as it allows headroom, 84C would be stupidity as it allows no headroom, cooler is always better.
