Mass Effect: Andromeda

As a die-hard ME fanboi (I would label myself this just based on the amount of complaining and hate in this thread versus my own opinions on the series), I am incredibly excited for this game!

Can someone tell me how we are seemingly knee-deep in the politics, conflicts, and other on-goings of the Andromeda Galaxy when we JUST GOT THERE?

According to the Game Informer article and a few things I've read, humanity didn't "just arrive" but have been there for a short time. They are still searching for a new home planet to colonize but they have some familiarity with the major species and political powers. I think this is done to make the game feel more like ME1 and less like the sequels in which humanity seemed to spread / penetrate into galactic civilization unbelievably fast.

I can't believe that the release is now in arms reach. I was waiting for this since Citadel. Individually neither game might be the best game of all times (altough ME2 came close for me) this by far my favorite single player game franchise.

I can't wait to get back to the universe and finally discover a brand new storyline.

Just make it exactly like the first 90% of ME3 and I'll eat it up. Might have been (IMO) one of, if not the, best games of all time, since it wrapped up a really strong trilogy, if not for the epic faceplant at the end. Not just the ending itself, but that whole last chapter... :(

Well, I would agree that most of the story missions were rather good in 3. But I just can't get past the crappy side missions and the lack of order to tackle primary missions. I don't want to see an abundance of side missions/fetch quests, but I would like more than listening to a phone call and then launching a probe at a planet. :p 5-6 good side missions that could impact the story, character interactions, politics and the like would be welcome though. Some leeway for tackling the main quests would be good to. Kind of like how the first game occasionally gave you three missions at once. Maybe make the order in which you choose them have some minor impact on the overall story.

Nothing over done though. I still want a strong central story, and hope this game stays true to that.

I like side missions, if each side mission will be like omega, leviathan, or the citadel :D The original game's side missions were pathetic you can't even call them missions. They literally solve themselves, you just have to visit the right place and interact with one object.

I'm hoping for a mix. I love 'good' side missions like Shadow Broker, but I actually love the little bits also liked the cow thief in ME1, or just finding a string of info pads across the landscape telling the final days of whomever wrote them. Even silly ones like the deactivated orb that ended in your cabin were cool. Basically, I want it all, and I want it now. :)

Yes, ME3 had the best balance of all the games by far, but if they could have more variance/feeling of control over the story like ME1, that would be ideal.

DA:O and ME1, to me, by far had the most feeling of immersion and actual major impact to a game world.

They seem to be deliberately showing very little of the game, which could be good or bad. Either they are afraid to because of backlash, or they are guarding as much as possible so people can be blown away.

They've already been confronted on the lip syncing and animations, to which Mac said they're still working to polish, but all the BioWare games have been so-so in the animation department. Thought a Dev house as big as their's would have gone to mo-cap years ago, but they seem determined not too. Playing a ME game after something like The Last of Us is just jarring, but they've always made up for it in story, character development and combo focused combat.

I don't want to speculate on what their reasons are, we'll find out soon enough. I just hope we're pleasantly surprised instead of disappointedly confirmed.

with the personnel issues around this title early on i was skeptical, and i am a huge ME fan. But, how it appears to be shaping up, i am back to can't effing wait for this title to release.

YEah, I'll definitely buy it at this point. I have loved all the others, might as well love this one too.

I'll bet that the game is being up-scaled from 1080P or a lower resolution to 4k for the consoles.

Well, i'll definitely be getting this for my PS4 Pro. Although, I honestly don't think it's a upscaled 1080p. It's yet to be officially said, but watch this video on a 4K monitor and judge for yourself. Runs pretty damn good and looks great and is running on PS4 Pro in the video.

This.

In fact, I pre-ordered the Deluxe edition, yesterday. First game I've pre-ordered since HL2.

Knowing the history of gameplay trailer vs. reality with Mass Effect, I'll have to agree. Sometimes I believe the higher difficulties are never tested with how absurd some of the armored enemies were in ME3 on Insanity, which ironically were balanced fine in the multiplayer on Gold and Platinum.

I played all the ME games exclusively on Insanity, and it was only really ME3 where it fell apart. Infact there was one particular point that was straight up impossible given my team/loadout, and point in the game. ME1 & 2 felt very well play tested IMO.

With Mass Effect 3, it was all about your squad makeup and how you managed them. Choosing the right weapons and even the armor with appropriate and complimentary bonuses to your playstyle was also key in tackling the missions. I completed ME3 on Insanity. ME1 was the only game I never completed that way. Its UI and combat mechanics were shit and were it not for the story and the amazing characters, I'd never have made it through that game at all.

I agree. With both ME2 and ME3 it was about knowing what types of enemies you were going to be facing during a mission and then stacking your squad to exploit those weaknesses. Every one of my playthroughs of each game in the series aside from the first 2 in the first game was played on Insanity using every available class. I think I have 30-40 in the books across all 3 games. ME1 was ridiculous, though, especially with the Krogans mentioned above. They pretty much required having an Adept on your squad.

This is what's captured me about the Mass Effect trilogy. I love the universe, the rich history and stories, incredible characters. Sure, I want breathtaking graphics and gameplay, but these always have been secondary to me.

I'd love to meet a woman like that, but I'm about 20 yrs too old (I'm 48). Woman my age still react to "video games" like you must be the guy living in your parents basement. Woman, you couldn't afford my basement!

LOL, I'm 40 myself and my wife is 35. I think we're (barely) from the era where gaming didn't have the "loser" stigma. She definitely isn't as serious as I am, but she loves Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Very unlikely that its native 4K considering that the PS4 Pro has to upscale BF1.

Based on tests I've seen, it will likely be up scaled 1440p. That said, it is still a noticeable improvement. Shadow of Mordor plays at 4k on the Pro, but Dishonored 2 only plays at 1440p (from what testers have said). I've played both these, and while it is easy to see they look better than up converted 1080p material, I could not say Dishonored 2 looked better than SoM. That could be difference in graphic engines, or their different art styles, but from a purely sharp, clean picture perspective, they looked near identical.

Ah, good choices. Mass Effect was my first BioWare game, I've loved them since. Wasn't as much of a Dragon Age fan, but did enjoy the first and last one. It looks like Andromeda will borrow from Inquisition in some ways, but hopefully without making it feel borrowed.

I'm still hunting for my Geekess, but I think it's a lost cause at this point. I did date a 35 yr old (when I was 45) that enjoyed gaming. She was awesome, we had the best conversations, but she also wanted more kids and my two are grown already; I'm done. Wasn't fair to her, so we agreed to go separate ways. My work schedule is hell on a relationship anyway, so it's just as well. I'm sure you wanted to know all that, lol. I'll go back to gaming now. ;)

Unlikely, yes. VERY unlikely, no. The 4K performance I see on games on my PS4 Pro are very admirable and people should not be so quick to dismiss it. I have seen the 4K footage of Mass Effect on PS4 and it's really impressive. Even if it's not native 4K it doesn't matter; few PCs under $1000 can do 4K natively.

Considering the very meager sample of not very demanding games that do currently support it natively, yes very unlikely.

False equivalency and pretty disingenuous. Its the same old asinine argument used by last gen console defenders in relation to 1080P upscaling. In reality any PC can do 4K natively, whether the fidelity and fps performance is acceptable is a subjective matter. A 5 year old cpu+mobo+ram combo coupled with a 980ti (sourced for less than $400) easily matches if not outperforms a PS4 Pro at 4K at like for like visual settings.

I wouldn't count on it. Though I bet the MP will be loaded down with microtransactions.

Precisely, look at the differences between each of the pre-order editions (uch...is a super deluxe edition actually a thing now?), EA is doubling down on its shitty microtransaction slot machine progression system. I also wouldn't be surprised to still see mini $DLC SP expansions...its not like the absence of season passes in the previous games stopped EA from shovelling out more overpriced content.

ME3 had a ton of free DLC for the multiplayer side. I'll hope for something similar this time around. Still feels strange that I spent 1000 hours in ME3 multiplayer and only beat the single player campaign once, after completing both ME1 and ME2 around 5 times a piece.

Yea, and if they are like the Normandy crash site I might have to riot. But if they are Shadow Broker... Shaddup and take my money.

Dragon Age Inquisition was a 100% complete game out of the box. Even though they added DLC later, it wasn't necessary. Nor was it overly expensive, too. I'm hopeful this will follow suit.

I can't wait to get this, however I am fairly pissed off I can't get the version with the Die Cast model in Ireland.
Gamestop are doing the RC version, but I have no interest in getting the RC car

There is no version of the game that comes with a model. The RC Car and model "versions" don't come with the game. They're just collectible items you can buy.
