Mass Effect 3 Discussion Thread

The game is starting to annoy me a bit.

No spoilers...

But over half the conversation scenes have no conversation options. Whenever I come upon a large, semi-open area with lots of cover, I think 'Dammit, I'm going to have to kill 30 waves of baddies before the game will let me continue this mission'.

There was even one large, open area, where the mission forced me to go from one end to the other, then I had to trek back across to exactly where I came from, and then go back AGAIN. And each time, fighting very similar waves of many many baddies. It's not even tough to kill them... it just feels like a time sink.

Overall, still enjoying it.

There are parts of the game that feel as open as ME1's, (the Citidel in particular is still like this) but parts of it are a bit linear.

I think I was in the same position as you. I ended up having to book it across the room for cover and meleeing the guys there instead of shooting them.

Is it just me or has the sniper rifle been nerfed?

I had forgotten about that. I think they wanted to illustrate that the events of the earlier games are finally taking their toll on Shepard to some degree. That's expected, but I'm not a fan of the dream sequences so far.

The first nightmare & the only one I've experienced was a bit tough to take. I've played plenty of games with dream sequences but I feel that ME3 doesn't do it quite right for me to feel an impact of what Shepard is feeling. When its done right, I either feel jolted or even more immersed with the story. Maybe they'll get better later on but I'll wait to give my final thoughts on that after I beat the game.

Citidel is FREAKING HUGE now i like it
and as i said i like the new load out weight system

I haven't seen enough of the Citadel in this game yet but I'm looking forward to it.

The weapons modifications, upgrades & load out selection is quite nice. I do appreciate the setup of this system. I have the M-15 Vindicator V loaded w/ nothing else as an Engineer. Max of 200% power recharge is quite fun when fighting baddies (& the gun is no slouch with mods on it). :D

i'm new to the ME series but decided to take the plunge with ME3. for what it is, im really enjoying it. its like a movie, game, and friends all put into one. :D

But in this game, you get access to a special area on the Citidel which is for active Specters only, and it gives you the option to purchase three new weapons, use a shooting range and modification station, as well as gain additional intelligence reports, and even authorize certain things

The shooting range is a great little feature. Modifiable target ranges, one target each for health/armor/shield. You get a ton of guns in this game (especially if you picked up the DLC ones, like the alienware giveaway, preorder, collectors edition, etc). It can be hard to really get a feel for them with the different addons in missions.

What I ended up doing, was first use the shooting range to find a gun you like from the 20 or so options I had. Upgrade that one to level 5 right away, use just one gun and take the power recharge bonus from low weight. If you upgrade a pistol and an SMG to 5, you can equip both and still have 200% power recharge speed. Or you could go with a single larger gun, the bloody exploding headshots make snipers pretty satisfying. :D

Playing an engineer, I have 200% power recharge, armor with 30% recharge speed and high-level skills. I can basically spam Incinerate and Overload, with about a 2 second delay between to fire a shot.

For some reason, PC gamers are some of the most sensitive little bitches......

/snip

So far I'm enjoying the game. Story seems good so far even if some sections or aspects of it could have been done better.

Good read Dan.

It takes one to two shots to kill a lot of bad guys with most of the sniper rifles unless you land a perfect head shot. Same as it has been in the othe games. ME1 was actually really bad about this until you leveled up enough and put enough mods / ammo mods on the weapon. Even the M98 Widow in ME2 required multiple hits on some enemies unless fully upgraded. Even then it still might depending on what you were fighting.

Yeah I didn't like that either. I typically don't like where the dream sequences in a game typically go. I really don't think they belong in the game. We'll see, I mean the events of Shepard's life taking a toll make a lot of sense. Shep's been through some crap.

Yeah, visually it's nice. I also like how the Citidel is organized and navigated now vs. how it has been done in the past. It is also really nice to see your ship mates / squad mates out and about when the ship is docked.

I'm using the solider class so I can carry more guns. :) In any event, I did the same thing. I used the ones I liked the most and upgraded them all the way to level 5.

Small spoiler request. I romanced Ashley in ME1 and then Miranda in ME2. What happens if I tell them both I want them in my life in ME3? Does that fark up any chance with either one of them in ME3 or does it initiate the catfight I've been waiting so long for? :D

Answering my own question, here is a post from a mod on the bioware forums relating to Liara and other choices:

For the record, the latter's not a bug. You can still decide to be with someone else up until that point (even if you tell Liara you want to rekindle your relationship in that first conversation in her office...) so we needed a way to definitively communicate to the player "OK, listen, this is absolutely it for choosing your one true romance". I went for the most obvious paraphrase possible to avoid any confusion over whether this was the moment you became a serious, together-forever item.

The former problem, Liara saying it's been years since she saw you instead of mentioing how she visited you in LotSB... I'm afraid that does sounds like a bug. The problem didn't appear during testing and I'm not sure why it's popping up now, but it looks like the game isn't recognizing that you had an intimate moment with Liara onboard the Normandy in LotSB. My sincerest apologies for that.

Same. Bad scripting regarding the cutscenes (thanks to limited FOV due to consoles), which means having to switch back & forth unless you don't mind the off-screen chaos revealed.

You switch back and forth by pressing the number pad number of your FOV, right? I think I'm doing that right...

I'm using FOV 90 and it looks great. I'm 16:10 1920x1200.

Grrr... 2 more days till it gets unlocked in Europe. I just wonder, why it couldn't have global launch.

So I downloaded ME3 via Amazon...tried to install, Origin didn't recognize it and now is making me completely re-dl it. Wtf. I have the whole 10GB d/l sitting under "Mass Effect 3" in my Origin games folder...any way I can try to get it to recognize it?

Yep. 90 does look good (same res as you). I switch back to 70 during cutscenes when I can remember to do so.

  1. Cancel the download in Origin
  2. Make a folder called "Mass Effect 3" where it will install to.
  3. Extract all files from the zip in the folder that you downloaded from Amazon to the "Mass Effect 3" folder.
  4. Refresh the games in Origin.
  5. It should tell you that it can install it.

Well I had moved the files over already...and just now, when I hit cancel download, it deleted the whole 10GB folder. GG Origin, GG.

Huh. Shouldn't work that way.

Here's a weird idea if you're sure you've done everything right thus far.

EDIT: Crimson beat me to it....

Close Origin.

You should have a Masseffect3.zip file or some such from Amazon, right?

Here's what a bunch of us learned with Amalur:

I started the install with the Amazon download, then once it opened up in Origin with an entry for the game, I canceled it (with the Clear option), closed Origin, and created the Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning folder where Origins places its games. Afterwards, you can unzip the Reckoning.zip file to that folder, start up Origins, and it should read Ready to Install. Click that, and it will sit there for a while, then you should be ready to go.

Apply that concept to Mass Effect 3 and it should work.

What you're going to do is start over. You deleted the files anyways.

Close Origin.

Manually create a Mass Effect 3 folder in the Origin folder where your games install. Find that masseffect3.zip file or whatever Amazon called it from what you got from them.

Unzip it in that folder you created. That's all the game files.

THEN fire up Origin. It should "take" and then you'll see it download an update for itself.

I always keep a backup of every downloaded game I have (except from Steam since I don't feel like downloading my whole entire library - though I probably should do it sometime).

I guess you might as well just get it all from Origin at this point. Sorry you didn't see my fix before you went through with that.

Yeah, that's the method I had to use for ME3.

Too late. Amazon actually downloaded the entire folder, uncompressed. I moved it over to the origin folder, then once I hit cancel download (because it intially only gave me the option to D/L, not install) it deleted the entire file folder. Only option is to re-dl the whole damn thing.

Amazon accidentally d/l'ed it to my small SSD C: drive; so I deleted it way to fast. I knew I shouldn't have, but I did it anyway...don't you hate that. :(

The downloader yelled at me for not having enough space on my system SSD. I have other times where an app assumes that I want to download it to a default location & then tell me I don't have enough space after its already downloaded a crapton before quitting & deleting what I just had. I wish these downloader apps were more intuitive about a person's preferences.

be careful with spoilers Dan_D...you made mention about spoilers in your posts before you started playing but now you are freely giving out major spoilers...or do spoilers only apply to parts beyond what you've reached in the game?...don't spoil the game's surprises for people (or at least use the spoiler tags)

Dan's post sounded very reasonable.

The one thing I'll say about the Tali reveal is that it just lacks creativity. Quarians obviously have a body structure that differs from humans, so why would they have an appearance that is entirely human except for some lines across the neck? We already have one human clone in the Asari. I was hoping for something a little more unique.

Again, not a big deal though.

I downloaded the intial 1MB installer file to a completely seperate 1TB drive. When I then ran the installer, it never even gave me an option to select a path...I assumed it would at least default to the same drive the installer was on. Nope, straight to the damn C: drive.

I don't think I spoiled anything. I mentioned a couple places you visited, and kept things pretty general. With regard to Tali, that's widely circulating the net. Not sure where that is or how far into the game, etc. that happens.

Well the trick in making alien species attractive to humans playing the game in a game is to make them look a little more human. You have to make them just different enough to make them exotic and alien, while still attractive by human standards. Asari, Twi-Leks, and other aliens in science fiction tend to all be pretty close to human while being just different enough to be interesting.

I think it only gives a dialog choice when there's not enough space.

Actually, you have to manage your files and folders in the Origin client itself. This determines your installation path.

Yes, with Origin & Steam. No, with some standalone downloaders from sites like Amazon, which what was being discussed.

I didn't realize we were talking about a different type of download / installation.

No problem. TwistedAegis & I had the same issue with the downloaded copy of ME3. Origin wouldn't recognize the installer as a valid source. I had to extract all data from the included zip in order for it to install correctly. TwistedAegis hit the same issue but has to redownload with Origin or Amazon again. It's a bit of a headache, which is why Origin appears to be the better choice to download from.

Oh I'm well aware of the rules of sexy green aliens. But the thing is, the picture they chose for her would be fairly boring (though attractive) for a human! They could have at least found a more "exotic" look. It is also interesting how no such concern exists for male aliens in the game. I suppose that is implicit acknowledgment of the shallowness of male gamers.

It has less to do with male gamers and more to do with the fact that most people who work in the gaming industry happen to be men. Male developers, or rather a predominently male development groups have a harder time figuring out what's going to be attractive with regard to male characters in a game. According to BioWare they really tried to make Thane attractive, but I think he's a bit too alien. My girlfriend really liked the character and romanced him when she played ME2, but it was mostly his personality that she liked. She, also disliked Jacob the most of the ME2 characters. He was my least favorite and I saw him as largely useless on missions. Miranda has the same weapons he does and she has her slam ability. Jacob was pretty much useless unless you wanted to bring him along for specific dialog with other characters. Which he did have on at least two or three occasions. Specifically he and Miranda change the conversation options quite a bit for the quest "Packages for Ish."
