Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 is in my anticipated video games list in the near future. I just haven't had much time to do any more playthroughs lately. I think I have just over 500/1000 on it. None of the DLC for it yet either :(

Ah well I will have to get around to try maxing it and get the DLC finished as well.

i'm nearing the end of a completionist playthrough of soldier i need to finish. then i'll have a high level save game with well built characters in every class except sentinal (i might even have that too)

my first playthrough was with soldier, so i didn't have lift, and i screwed up points really bad (no immunity(

After playing my first few times through as a soldier, I went back and did a pure adept for a different experience and have to say it's been the most fun for me. Pure engineer was ok, but singularity and lift and push are so awesome.

the biotics are a ton of fun too, somehow i feel like i enjoy the soldiering a little more. one of the most fun playthroughs i had was as pure engineer, because you didn't feel AS invincible, meaning you had to just take a few extra seconds to disable weapons or whatever. still, with all the shields on the engies, you end up being able to take a real beating

Especially if you've unlocked the ability to add AR's and blast the floating baddies with SPECTRE gear. :D

ME is probably my favorite game of the current gen as well and this is by far my most anticipated game right now.

Biotic is my favorite class. Charging krogan? Lift or push :)

When I beat it on insane my regular party was ashley and wrex beefed up as shooters and me as full biotic. I'd send everything flying, they'd blow it away. Usually had one using shotty one with assault rifle.

What'd you do for tech stuff, or did you just skip all of the containers?

I skipped most of them. By my 4th or 5th playthrough I realized that eventually I'd always max out money and omnigel, and opening every single container in the game was just overkill. You get more money sooner by doing it, but it was eventually a totally useless activity. You could always substitute tali or garrus though for ashley or wrex.

My favorite tech skill was AI hacking, which was always fun with big geth.

"Between Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and The Old Republic, Bioware has an absolutely insane portfolio of games on the way. What's even more amazing?

"Our best stuff is still ahead of us," they conclude."

lol, ya Mass Effect 3!

mmmm Can't wait. I have been always enjoyed Bioware's games. This thread made me bust out all my old Bioware games and give em another whirl!

im excited but honestly i haven't even played the first one so, i think i'll be buying that one soon. considering its only 20 bucks. but right now im addicted to playing halo 3 on xbox live. and im getting pretty good.

Well, I started playing ME1 again last night to get myself a savegame that I'm happy with. I guess they're implying that you won't be starting ME2 with things from ME1...but knowing how they handled Baldur's Gate, I'm covering my bases. The game is frighteningly easy on the 2nd pass anyway. With the right upgrades, you can just open fire with the rifle or pistol and they'll never overheat. You can literally play it like a shooter and have no issues at all.
Since there's a report of one more DLC level for ME1, any fans might want to keep a savegame that's prior to Vermire.

Oh yeah, they also release the iPhone Mass Effect game last week. I DL'ed it, but haven't played it as I guess there's a performance boosting patch due later this week.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED Mass Effect, however I played it 3 times and never touched it again. I'll likely rent it, do the same and save $55.

I'm bummed that there is no insanity mode unlock and no new game + mode anymore in ME2.

still will love the game though i'm sure

Can you explain the new game + mode? I'm not sure I follow what you mean. Do you mean that we'll no longer be able to replay the game with our saved characters?

When you win ME1, you can start the game again with a character that has already completed the game. You keep all of your levels, powers, weapons, etc.
It's actually the only way to reach level 60. They cap you at level 50 in your first playthough.
ME2 supposedly won't have this.

Wait, Veronica, please tell me this is some kind of sick tasteless joke.

I've never liked new game+ playthroughs in any game that offers them. It removes all sense of challenge and character progression from the game when you start out strong enough to kill the last boss.

I'm pretty sure ME2 will have a new leveling system to allow you to hit level 60 - or whatever level cap you unlock via achievements, on a second fresh play through. If not, then ME2 fails.

that's exactly what they're saying it won't have. The replacement will be a system that supposedly lets you keep playing after you beat the game, but not in a new game...in the same gamefile.

I don't mind the whole "game +" idea in some games. For instance in many games, you'll get some wacky new weapon, power, etc. so close to the end of a game that you barely even have time to use it. Having another play-through with all of your stuff gives you room to play around and try stuff out.
Granted, in Mass Effect it makes you Godlike...but if you up the difficulty with combat, it can balance that out a bit.
I really enjoyed the option in the Ninja Gaiden games. In those, you get some new weapons right in the middle of a shitstorm and you might never get a chance to really play around and learn what you're doing if it weren't for the game + mode.

Actually Kotaku messed it up. Actiontrip explains it that you will be able to replay the game in ME1 way... but only with characters created in ME2. If you port your character rom 1st game you won't be able to use it for 2nd run of ME2. Actually that's good idea IMO, as ME1 character after few replays would get way too powerful.

link to that?

They could always just cap our experience after one play through so we don't get "overpowered". Of course then how do they deal with people playing through ME2 multiple times with a character they just created? Are they just increasing the level cap and giving people more points to invest? (these questions aren't directed at you btw :) )

The only way I can see them doing this effectively is to increase the level cap to say 80 and just stopping people there.

I just got done playing ME again, I actually enjoyed driving the mako this time. Being able to leap over rockets is fun, plus if you drive with the left trigger held, you can control it a bit better.

This playthrough I was a total asshole, killed the aliens, killed the council, killed all of the story characters who all of a sudden decided they were good guys. F that I say, if they were evil once, take em out. :)

Also, calling the council between missions to talk shit, then hang up is hillarious.

But seriously: The ending battles of the major missions suck on hardcare. Ending the mission to get Liara is a pain...the Krogan just charges you...and your teammates die right away. Then you die, and have to sit through the elevator animation and dialog with the krogan. Again. And again. And AGAIN.

This is my only complaint about the game. That same spot made me want to throw my controller.

I just started my second playthrough so I can unlock assault rifles and reload my first character. I put this game off for a long time and regret it. I played it a while ago but never got past Eden Prime, just couldnt get into it. For the last four days its all Ive played.

This game did alot of things right that alot of action RPGs dont. First, the weapon/ability quickswitch is perfect. This is the first game since BioShock to get it right. So many games have the feature, but dont pause gameplay while you navigate, which makes it useless (erhm, fallout), or make you pause the game entirely to switch weapons, which is a failure too. The FPS nature of the game is also dead on, which is very rare in an action RPG. (erhm, fallout again).

I really cant say anything bad about it. The weapon upgrade system is sort of tedious, but I ended up appreciating it a lot toward the end. I was also really glad that my first playthrough only lasted ~21 hours (minimal side quests, but lots of exploring dialogue). Thats about the perfect length to want to play it through again.Once I get the assault rifle achievement I'll start again with my first character and do all the side quests. Best game Ive played recently and depending on how much I enjoy the 2nd and 3rd playthroughs it might end up being my favorite game period.

Bring on 2010.

Yea I loved that part. This most recent playthrough I actually took the time to check out the different ammo. I love the ice bullets.

Killing a dude, then having him freeze and shatter is too awesome.

The pistol with explosive rounds is really fun too, but the one I have overheats after 2 shots lol.

I think ME was somewhat difficult at first just because you had to get used to the controls, the game system, menus, etc.
Once you start to gain some levels and powers (or better weapons), that's when the game eases up a bit.
My wife won the first game before I did and I remember her giving me hints that seemed weird at the time, but they worked.

One of the best things you can do early in the game is to complete all of the Citadel missions before doing anything. You can hit level 7 or 8 before even heading on a mission. Also, scout all of the normal planets and asteroid fields for minerals and whatnot. Without landing or doing a mission, you can gain a fair amount of misc. experience early in the game.

Damnit, seems I missed something when I played ME, guess I'll have to fire it up again. :D

I've been playing through the game again over the past week, and it's pretty cool how much detail they put into the backstory, setting, aliens, etc. in the game. However the more I play it, the more I realize that the game itself really isn't that great. The combat's a watered down, the buildings are all the same, driving the Mako is torture, the menu navigation is rough, the side missions are repetitious, etc.
I think ME's really much better in hindsight when you look at the plot and setting, but the actual "game" part is pretty tedious.
It's like they came up with this really cool world and had big dreams of where it could go...but they forgot to make a game that lived up to it.
When you look at ME2 so far, it does seem like they fleshed the game part out some more - so hopefully it'll rock.

I just noticed, on my 3rd playthrough, that almost every planet has a significant population but you can only land on a few. Thats pretty weak in my book. You cant even land on Eden Prime?!

I'm following a guide to get the Ally and Completionist achievements and I'm noticing that I missed ALOT of content my first time through. If anyone thinks it gets too easy when you game+, I suggest upping the difficulty. I have an adept character on Hardcore and its taking some serious strategy to get through most assignments. I cant imagine the game on Insane, even with a level 50+ character.

I Semi-Cheated on my ME playthrough.. I used the Doctor on the Citadel Loophole to make $1m Credits, early on and get Specter Gear for most of the game.. Much funner..

I didn't know about a money exploit, but you pretty much have an unlimited amount of money once you're 1/2 way done with the game anyway.
If money ever is an issue, just stick to the same party of 2 characters for the entire game or unequip your crew after each mission so you can give your current crew the better/upgraded stuff each time.

Yeah.. it was pretty easy..

If you rescue the female doctor at the citadel and get on her good side, she will allow you to buy items from her cheap.

BUT, she also will give you a BIG premium on stuff you sell her.

So, You sell 20 really expensive items to her.. Go out of the med-bay and take the transport to the merchants.. use the buy back to get those 20 items back at a huge discount.. Every trip, you profit bigtime.. If you have ultra premium gear to buy-sell you can eek out 100k+ each trip.

Nice. I pretty much just opened everything I could and upped my team's stats so I could open/retrieve anything. I think I had 999,999 after clearing Noveria and Feros, plus a few of the major side missions.
For weapons - Liara and Kaiden can't specialize in anything, so don't even bother equipping them. Just be sure to turn on the AI abilities feature.
For the other characters - stick to the 1-2 guns they can specialize in. Don't even bother giving them other guns as sometimes the CPU randomly swaps to things they aren't even trained in.
I'm on my 2nd pass and I have everyone with every Spectre weapon with level X upgrades...but yet I wish I didn't. I'd rather the "mage" characters not have any weapons so they wouldn't be temped to use them.
Is there any way to unequip someone completely?

Thats cool, but really unnecessary. I earned something like 7 million on my first playthrough, not even trying to collect money. You might be pretty broke when you first start, but do some assignments before the missions. Ive collected almost a million credits and havent been to Noveria or Feros yet.
