Mass Effect 2

My only compliant with the game is that the powers suck. Everything aside from using assault rifles is worthless. I played as a vanguard and only lasted about 10 hours. Replayed as a soldier and tore through the game with assault rifles.

Up the difficulty! Play as an adept. The powers are insane and there are so many ways to kill people. If your playthrough only lasted 10 hours then you must have had it on easy or normal and only done the main story missions. Theres so much more to the game.

Only the assault rifle is useful? Have you used the sniper rifle or pistol? Are you trained with them? Any weapon untrained is useless, but the sniper rifle and pistol are essential. I probably use the pistol more than the assault rifle. The AR gets overheated way too fast and isnt very accurate compared to the pistol. The Spectre issue pistol is an amazing weapon!

I wiped the floor with the game as an adept. in my experience all of peoples complaints about hard parts, boss fights, etc, are made irrelevant by lift and throw and singularity, etc.

qft, and anyone who hasn't trained up the shotty or the sniper rifle is missing out so much. I wrecked people with adept + pistol

Just finished a short session. I forgot how ridiculous the spectre AR is. It makes overkill obsolete. Love this game. Can't wait for ME2!! I hope it lives up to the hype.

Once you get to a high enough level with weapon/ammo upgrades I remember my assault rifle would fire for a LONG time before it would over heat. But then again playing on the hardest difficulty you have to shoot someone for about 2 minutes to kill them without using powers.

If you play as a soldier (using only weapons) make sure you have teammates that have powers.

I'm a Vanguard and swap between the shotgun and pistol. With the right upgrades your pistol will actually NEVER overheat even if you just hold down the trigger all of the time.
Plus, the "marksman" power is great. It turns your pistol into gatling gun.
Once that power fades, I swap to the shotgun...which is slower, but pretty much an insta-kill in close. The power that lets you fire rockets from the shotgun (rampage...or something like that) is one of the strongest single shots in the game.
I tend to just alternate between those two things along with using "throw" here and there.
Once I use all of my powers, the adrenaline ability regens your powers so you can use them again quickly.

Lots of the abilities are pretty good. One thing to remember is that your AI partners won't use their good powers unless you turn it on in the game menu. The fact that it's off by default is stupid.
"Lift" at high levels pretty much = win.

There are add ons for the weapons that will keep them from overheating as fast.

I've become a huge fan of stasis, lift, and push. I'm playing through again as a level 52 bastion (I think that's what it's called). I can stasis guys and still damage them. It's fun, but it's aggravating because my teammates just stand around while I wail away on the guy in stasis.

Lift is great because it basically does the same thing as stasis now except my teammates will shoot at the target now too.

And push is just plain fun. Nothing like watching some bad guy charge you only to go flying back when he's about 10 feet away.

I'm getting more and more excited for ME2 the longer this thread gets :).

Supposedly we're still due to get one last DLC for Mass Effect #1...hence I'm keeping a savegame with everything complete right before Virmire.
I guess it's rumored to be some sort of casino/wild west type of planet. Bioware was due to announce it a week or two ago, but had to put the brakes on it. Instead they spent time patching the worthless ME on the iPhone.

Maybe on normal but on hardcore and insanity you have to absolutely unload on EVERYTHING to kill them. That said, the spectre issue weapons with the right upgrades will almost never overheat.

With a regular, say level 5 weapon I have watched enemies regenerate health while they are being hit on hardcore. Before you unlock Spectre weapons you have to be very strategic about using overload and damping to get kills. On the rogue VI mission I actually had to sprint past the enemies because I jus didn't have the firepower to defeat all the robots. Must have tried 10 times with no indication that I could eventually take them down.

I am going through Mass Effect right now for the first time and I am wondering if the DLC is worth it? (I bought the game used) Also if I get the DLC will it work in the current game I am playing or will it only work on a new game?

I can't recall how much the DLC for Mass Effect is, but it's pretty good for $3-5. The game really only has 6 unique missions and the DLC just adds a 7th with new aliens (with better AI), and a new planet.
Unless you've already completed Virmire, it'll work with your current game. The game just adds a new cluster of planets and a quest to your journal. When you complete the DLC, you get a reward that can't be found anywhere else, plus achievement points (if you care).

Thanks for the info. I have not completed Virmire yet but I just got the quest for it from the council so I can still add it to my current game? It is only 400 point.

Yup, you can still add it. I mention Virmire, because that's a turning point with the plot (no spoilers). Nothing changes until you actually finish that mission.

I have a combo of weapon upgrades that allows me to continously hold down the fire button on the Spectre AR and never lose accuracy or overheat. There are some guides floating around that explain which mods to use.

Generally - the "frictionless materials" upgrade is the key to not overheating. It doesn't really matter much with slow weapons like the sniper rifle or shotgun (since they have to be reloaded) but you always want it for pistols & machineguns.
From memory, I think I usually did Frictionless Materials, Kinetic Coil, and then Sledgehammer Rounds for the rapid fire weapons.
The type of ammo boost you use is more or less situational, but there's one kind that offers a universal damage boost that you can stick with if you're lazy. I don't remember what kind it was, but it's pretty clear if you just look down your list of upgrades.

Yea I will do that. Mass Effect is one of the few games I am keeping for the Xbox 360.

I was pleasantly surprised by Mass Effect and I may even consider redownloading this for PC.

Can't wait for this new game. The first one was awesome except for the long loading times.... That sucked.
