Man its dead in here.

I know.

It seems that there is usually 10-15 people viewing, but there is a serious lack of postage:(

What's it going to take to liven things up around here... other than more "It's dead" threads??

We need to rob a Bank so we can buy 3000 Q6600 rigs and beat Default team:D

Pfft.

You just need some suckers to come out of the shadows and stir the pot...

You have to expect some downtime during the holidays, Xmas shopping, home for college, etc is affecting the number of posters all across the forums...happens every year. It'll pick up after Christmas.

Yeah, I'm going to disappear for about two weeks soon for the holidays but my machines will still be folding.

True enough Major.

But I think this place has been dead enough for long enough.

It's time to install a disco ball. Can you get someone to do that? :)

Since when does Major AND Lethal post in one of my threads, in the same day, and the same thread... wait... they must be following me.

My cover is blown!!

Ooooh sparkley!

No shit!

It must be very slow in those other forums. Strange days indeeeeed!

holiday break in new jersey, hoping my computers are still running at home ^_^

What are we ever doing over here? I never really found the reason I first came to this dump and ended up hanging out with these obsessive crazies...

Kinda like marty though, keep coming back for more...

Once a wise man told me... You're as dead you want to be so lighten yourself up...

Almost as dead as my production. The Raptor in my main rig died and I'm down to an Athlon X2 and a couple P4s. Not good.

If this thread was anywhere else it would have been killed by now!
Glad to see it still going as its a bit of fun :)

To save this thread from extinction...
I've never folded cos electricity isnt cheap and never really had a good chance to ask the following:
Has anyone got some stats on how much extra it costs per year to fold compared to not folding?

Please quote the basic PC spec too for comparison and whether you run extra machine(s), leave current machine on longer or just use a machine thats already on.
Also please say if you are using a GPU to fold and which GPU.
If you can quote the extra KW/h used that would be nice but I can work on the figures without.

Do you think folding has affected the long term stability of your PC?

I like to help but gotta look after myself too so I would really like to know.
Cheers

Okay, I know posts about posts in other threads are lame, but holy shit... that one comment there is really out of line in my opinion.... I'm sure you can figure out which one I'm talking about.....

LOL, way to stir some shit about folding like when aldamon posted a poll in the Intel forum (or it was someone else, correct me if i'm wrong)...

Anyway, K*, do you have some ideas to stir things around here beside summoning a moose ?

I was going to ask if this is Mr. Second Place speaking but I see you're smacking Tormond around again. :p

lol

i gave up trying to maintaini 500 installs of F@H... so most of them have crashed and the smp clients on all the servers expired like 2 months ago...

I really don’t get it. Nobody has forced folding on anyone, MS didn’t add it to Windows, Kyle didn’t put a worm in Hard Forums to make sure everyone folds. The entire project is totally voluntary.

It has nothing to do with Penis size, although I have noticed since FLECOM got his Viagra supply his production did fall off a bit, but that’s a different story;)

What really bugs me is the people who immediately start out with “it costs too much”. Yes, no doubt about it, the size of your electric bill will rise. If it is more then you can comfortably afford to spend then please don’t fold. That in mind, these are the same people who dropped 5 to 6 hundred on a console game box. The same people who probably own more then one brand of game box. The same people who spend 15 bucks a month to belong to at least one gaming server. The same people who as a rule own, judging by some of the signatures in their posts some pretty expensive computers.

Add to all that how many drop by the bar every week or more and drop a minimum of 20 bucks or more for a few beers, double that if you get a cheeseburger and fries and don’t forget the tip. They seem to have no problem spending three dollars a gallon for gas to run around with their buddies or girl friends and on and on and on.

Truth be told it’s none of my business or your business how anyone spends their dollars. It’s their money and they are free to spend it as they see fit, but please stop using that as your sole reason for not folding, I don’t buy it. The very fact those folk jump right into a thread like that with an unasked for excuse reeks of guilt in one form or another. Don’t want to fold, fine, nobody asked for your reason.

indeed....i fold because i want to, and for no other reason that because i want to...sure i love the stats, but hey, i love myself a friendly competition, but that's not the reason i started folding, and it's not the reason i keep folding.

electric bill is second fiddle for me anyway. i ride a bike back and forth to and from college, so i don't have to pay the awful gas prices. i avoid buying myself much in the way of excess alcohol because honestly, it's a lot of money after a while. hell, i don't even USE a heater, because my computers take care of that for me (and for less money at that), so in the end, folding probably ends up saving me money, and even if it didn't, there are plenty of ways to cut out the maybe $10-15 per month increase in the electric bill from other areas of my life.

lol.

Say something like "man this forums dead" and admins come running. PSU editors mods and all.

Well, its responses like yours that take away all the feelgood factor and to be honest, I'd rather not have anything to do with [H] folding team when people like you are going to become part of my daily life.

You are right it is none of your business why I make my own decisions. Thats because they are my own decisions.
I asked for some advice/information, I didnt ask to be slandered for asking legitimate questions that help ME make a decision.

Seeing as its none of your business, how is it that in the next few words you are telling us how sick you are of people who say they cannot afford to fold?
Do you have an exclusive right to air your issues but nobody else can?

My post was as much asking about the costs and implications as it was to see the reaction of the community.
I wont be joining [H]'s folding team quite simply because of you, way to go.
When I "CAN" afford to fold I will be joining someone elses team.
G'day :)

ps no wonder its dead in here!

Nenu, no offense, but I believe BillR was talking about the troll in the Console forum Folding thread since he quoted "penis size." The thread was linked by Parja. I'm glad you took the time to ask some questions, but you shouldn't get upset and assume everyone is replying to you exclusively.

Also, nobody here will care who you fold for. This is anonymous. If you're now pissed off because of a misunderstanding on a bulletin board and will fold for another team out of spite, good. At least you'll still be helping the project.

"G'day"

His comments applied directly to me as well as many others because money is an issue and at the moment it does cost too much for me.
I was saddened that it can cost a pretty penny so I need to increase my yearly PC budget by quite some % to fold a lot.

I am not prepared to be name called for wanting to do something good that I cannot afford yet.
If I am to put my time, effort, money and potentially my PC's reliability on the line, I sure am not going to put up with his trashing of everyday people because we cannot afford some things.

I was looking forward to joining a decent community and helping a team.
Up until he responded, I was rewriting my budget (making sacrifices!) so I can start to do some folding.
Now I need to find another place where I'm not made to feel like an outcast for being a normal person who wants to help.

Enough of this petty back and forth bullshit.

Nenu, you are welcome here, don't listen to the old grump ;) We don't.

BillR has been here **ForEVER** and is a good guy. Words get taken out of context on the internets quicker then you can hock a lugie.. You know its true.

This forum and team is all about FOLDING. If you can contribute one work unit, you have done a good thing.

If you can contribue 10,000 it is also a good thing. Each unit is a step in the right direction.

If you submit them through team 33, or team 100000 it doesn't matter, so long as you do it!

No one _has_ to do contribute, but for every person who does, we may be one step closer to not loosing a brother, sister, father, mother, etc to cancer or a similar disease.

Thank you for coming in to take the time to talk to us and try to learn more, that is the first step, if you ever have any questions about folding, come back again, there are plenty of people here still willing to help you and point you in the right direction.

Some people just get hypersensitive over somethings and like to get into debates, it's all good.

Fold hard, fold long, and borg as many girls as you can :D
Happy Holidays to you and your family

-aldamon you are not doing anything yourself to help the matter, cheer up! :p

To save this thread from extinction...<snip>

Hummm... nobody actually answered, so I'll try.

Electricity.....No clue, I have never checked, my wife handles all the bills and she hasn't complained about any huge increase.... of course we have far too many machines running 24/7 at any given time as it is, so I can't really help there....

Specs... I personally fold on anything that will finish a work unit. I don't have any big new quads or anything like that, mostly older P4's and such. My production is really slow. I consider a 1,000 point day HUGE, but that's just me, it's not all about the points in my opinion. I fold for the cause... seriously.

Wear on your machine.... I haven't noticed any. I'm typing this reply on a P4 3g Northwood with 1g of ram, and a X1950pro....the mobo CPU and memory are almost four years old. I use the CPU client because apparently the GPU client hates me and refuses to run on this box. I have been folding on this machine for a solid year, and no problems so far.

And really, don't take things so personally... it's just an internet forum, that's all. And I for one would like to have you join the team, but that's really up to you.

It also depends on the area where one folds. Some regions have relatively cheap power available, while in other areas it costs a lot more. I believe power is generally more expensive in the west coast.

This also depends on the type of hardware you run. I used mostly socket-A architecture over the years and this hardware was rather unpredictable in the long-term. Lots of dead chips and a few bad boards. I also experienced problems with Intel hardware but mostly the older, obsolete stuff. Generally, if you run workstation or server hardware from either company, it will last longer running 24/7 because it's designed for heavy use from the onset.
