Low end lan fps needed

Hi guys,

at the end of the month my department at work will be throwing a small lan party, and my manager put me in charge of the computer gaming stuff. My idea was to find a simple pc deathmatch shooter, since everyone at work already has their work laptop (mostly thinkpad t60/t61). The restraints: cheap (not over 10 euros a copy, we need up to 16 licenses), runs on old hardware (i tried the ut 2k4 demo, its not as fluent as i would prefer, even 8*6 all low), and needs to be available from shops (here in holland, so no newegg/amazon)

i'm ok with demo's, as long as it contains a good map, thats the other strike against ut 2k4, i hate dm-rankin. The party is only for a few hours tops, so only having one or two maps to play isnt a problem.

My first thought after dumping ut 2k4 was obviously the original UT, but i cant find it anywhere anymore (some idiot etailer listed it, bu now i have 3 copies of UT3, with 8 more on the way... grrr )

so, any good and easy suggestions?

Also, i considered quake live, but i prefer hosting a private server on the lan, none of this public matchmaking stuff

steam
u can also go with hl2 death match or whatever version of hl2 and install a multiplayer mod on top of it
maybe hl1 with cs1.6 if hl2 taxes your pc too much

Um, UT99 is 10USD on Steam. Q3A should be cheap if you can find somewhere. Painkiller...uhh...Call of Duty maybe?

Honestly your best bet is going to be UT99. Also, how can you hate Rankin? :p

forcing all my coworkers into a steam account and signing up with CC info isnt a path i want to go down, so steam is right out

Go OLD SCHOOL. Quake. Demo is free, and should run fine on just about anything.

http://download.cnet.com/Quake-demo/3000-7563_4-10002186.html

Original UT demo:

Does the Quake 2 Demo have MP? I don't recall:
http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quake/quake2/index.php?game_section=demo

Any one of those should do what you need. and the cost is right.
What OS are you running?

we all run XP sp2/3

im downloading the ut demo as i type, but cnet is SLLLLLOOOOOOWWW (50 mb should take 10 seconds on my line, not 1,5 hours), and ill check out the Q and Q2 demos, although one coworker already voiced herself as very pro-ut and anti-quake... (some people just lack FPS skill :p)

as i said, steam isnt an option, i just want to have a stack of discs there when everyone comes in (or a demo installer on the network), ill check out any demos for painkiller and CoD

As for rankin, it just isnt my thing, give me asbestos or tokara forest any day for DM :p

and ill probably hit the budget bin at the local big-box store

Why not do this:

- Create 16 Steam accounts
- Gift 16 copies of UT99 to the 16 accounts you just made
- Have the Steam installer and steamapps folder with UT99 files in it on the network
- Have coworkers install Steam and then drag in the steamapps folder
- Play games

Just an option.

And Asbestos/Tokara Forest?! Ew. I'm not anti-Quake but I do prefer UT over Quake. I prefer the movement style over incessant UGH-UGH-UGH bunny hopping.

^Yes Quake Live is pretty good.

I bet Counterstrike Source would run on a t6x, not sure how much CS: S is nowadays though.

css is €20,1.6 is half that and would run better on older hardware.

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was a blast when I used to play it, plus its free. It should work on pretty much anything.

Counter Strike would be the best for this kind of party. It's the simplest shooter around and you can get it very cheap. Contact their customer service and ask them for a bulk discount.

Wolfenstein ET isnt basic deathmatch is it? i dont really remember. Most of my coworkers arent exactly hardcore gamers, so i figure simple DM is easier to get into then the whole objective based thing in ET.

I just tried the UT demo with the guy next to me, and it works, it is just a bit lean on content, half the weapons and such

i'll also check out sauerbraten, website looked cool

I'd go with Quake II or III IMO

Nice and simple and straightforward. Maybe even Q2 CTF or LMCTF

If you were still considering UT99, it's available on GOG.com for $9.99. GOG tend to strip out absolutely any and all DRM so it's a more convenient and usable option than Steam.

I guess UT would possibly give you some nice options for mods as well, though I don't know any off the top of my head.

(GOG has UT2004 for the same price but you ruled that out already on performance grounds)

cs 1.5. You know you wanna do it, damn I wanna now. You know you want to play mansion also ha.

AVP2 is awesome at LANs and should be pretty cheap wherever you can find it.

Also, did you try UT2004 with the software renderer? It's not going to be pretty, but the CPU might be able to run games better than integrated video at lowest settings.

Another vote for Quake Live. It's simple, it's free, and it will run on that hardware. I ran it on an N270 based netbook at low settings just to try it, and it was quite playable.
