Hi all,
I'm building a gaming machine. This is my first time building a machine, so I'm looking for a lil help. My budget is around the 2k mark, give or take a bit, but I need no peripherals. I know very little about OC'ing but am planning to start playing around with it so please keep that in mind when you give your advice. I currently have my computer hooked up to my 50" Sony 1080P LCD tv and would like to continue if at all possible. Looking to play pretty much everything out there...crysis, COD4 etc... I've spent the last day or so reading reviews and forums and this is what I have for now. A couple trouble spots for me are fans(no idea how many i need, size etc), also alot of people reccomend noctua as a brand but nobody local seems to have them. The other things is ram speed, I have no idea if I should be going 800/1066/1333 mhz. Please let me know if I'm forgetting anything as well or if I should be including a RAID setup etc or conflicts.

Ihave a SB X-Fi in my old system that I'm going to use as well

Thanks

I don't know if Apevia is a good brand for a PSU.

A Q6600, or a E8400 might be better choices for your CPU.

Listing components by name instead of just pasting links would probably get more replies.

try these sites vs. Tigerdirect

www.infonec.com

www.canadacomputers.com

both have multiple locations and smoke the product lines and better prices see as your in Canada (me too)

If you are putting together a nice system you need a solid psu and apevia is anything but. Stick with Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power & Cooling, Antec & Enermax for the psu. Its the heart of the system and you cant risk the whole thing with a bad heart.

That's a solid build except for the case. I don't know much about it, but I would opt for a good Antec or LianLi before an Ultra.

Getting close I think, hoping someone will elaborate a bit on why I should pick certain thing...i.e. processor, why take a duo core instead of the quad, whether or not I'll need additional cooling and anything I'm missing, Thanks to all replies so far.

CPU COOLER
Lost on this one, not sure what I need or what will fit.

bigger cpu cooler, more heat pipes.
power supply seems kinda sketchy, look for one with good user reviews on newegg.com

the first 2 psu's you listed are a disaster waiting to happen. I hope I dont sound like a snob about this but when you are building a high end system like you are you CANNOT GO CHEAP ON THE PSU! :p The antec is the minimum you should go with. What you need to look at is the efficiency of the psu for starters 80% should be your minimum.
go here http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html thats the sli certified psu list from nvidia and coolermaster 650w doesnt meet teh specs.
fyi you mis-read the price for the antec psu its showing @ $119.99.

Here are some quality units that wont let you down,

ugh, nobody to save me some typing? I'll keep it short.

Ditch DDR3... there's not enough performance improvement over DDR2 to warrant the price premium on both DDR3 RAM itself nor on the motherboard. If you get the E8400, all you need is DDR2-800. If you get the Q9300, get some DDR2-1000 sticks. You won't notice a difference between CL4 and CL5, unless you're running benchmarks (and even then, the difference is negligible), so don't pay a huge price premium for lower latency.

If you want to do SLI for your 1080P monitor, pickup an nForce 780i board. Last I remember, people were recommending the MSI P7N Platinum. If you want Crossfire, pickup an X38 or X48 board, like the Gigabyte DQ6 or DS4. If you'd rather stick to a single card solution, go with a 9800GX2 and a P35 board.

eVGA has a nice Step-Up program that lets you upgrade your card, but pay the difference, within your first 3 months of ownership. They also have a lifetime warranty that allows you to change your stock cooler. XFX has a double lifetime warranty that appeals to people who plan on reselling their card later on. BFG also has great customer service, lifetime warranty and, IIRC, a new step up program.

Read up on RAID and decide if its worth it for you. Most home users don't need RAID. RAID0 is for speed, and RAID1 is for minimal downtime. RAID is not a backup solution. RAID5 has the best fault tolerance with the least overhead, has fast read times, and better than normal write times (but not as fast as RAID0).

For HDDs, stick to the new Samsung F1 series (like the 750GB drive you chose) or any drive that uses 300GB+ platters, like the WD6400AAKS. The platter density improves speeds more than a larger cache size.

For a PSU, a Corsair 620W modular would be good if you get a single card. If you go with SLI, pickup the Thermaltake Toughpower 750W Modular (or higher). AVOID using newegg user reviews to help you decide on a PSU. Base your decision on proper PSU reviews that use A.T.E. for tests.

For a CPU Cooler, avoid the Zalman and get the ZEROtherm Nirvana, Xigmatek Rifle HDT-S1283, or Noctua NH-U12P.

I would recommend against RAID except mirroring (RAID1). From someone who has dealt with it: the performance gains are not worth doubling the chances of a HD failure.

just about vomited when I saw that apevia PSU. $110 (b4 $10 MIR) Corsair 750TX ;). Also, hossdaddy, that Antec Realpower isn't much better! The infinity is good but its outdated!

Modular PSUs are really only for looks, and since the P182 doesn't have a side pannel anyways, I wouldn't worry about it.

2nd: Tigerdirect.ca support is the suck. NCIX support is nothing to write home about (everyone working there needs a couple english classes), but its better than Tiger Directs. They're also canadian based out of Vancouver BC. Never really worked with canada computers or infonec.

The bigger the CPU cooler the better usually. Frosty Tech is the place to go for CPU cooler reviews. The thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme seems to be the best around, at a price. Ultra has a nice pelter air cooler, but its like $130

Ditch DDR3. You dont want 790i as admitted by Nvidia it has serious OC issues and it forces you on DDR3. My suggestion is an X38 or P35 based board both of which will OC just as far/further, and neither of which support SLI. In that respect however, its worth noting that ATI is going to release the new HD4k series around the beginning of June and it should outperform the current Geforce 8 and 9 series cards.

Anyways, yes, the price difference between DDR2 and DDR3 and their respective chipsets is way too big for the marginal performance benfits of DDR3 to overcome. 8 gigs of DDR2 1000 (EPP not JEDEC) can be done for $250!

With all the money you'll save (and performance you'll gain) from switching to DDR2, you can put an extra couple bucks into the CPU allowing a Q9450 to fit in the budget, doubling your L2 size!

@rockjay, Newegg doesn't ship to canada :(, not to mention if someone gets an OC they don't like, too frequently the owner will just return it to the store for a new one. The returned poor-OC one is then resold as an "open box" item.

Thanks for all the help so far guys!!!

I do want to use SLI, so is there something other than the two you recommended that doesn't have the DDR3 issues but still allows for SLI. I found the cooler you recommended, but it doesn't have a fan, will I need to get one for it?

How does a power supply become outdated? It has lots of power 57amps!, its over 80% efficient and has active pfc.

Just for the record it wasnt a realpower, its the true power trio and its on the nvidia certified psu list for 8800gt and 9600gt.

Since I am underbudget, I was thinking of upgrading the video cards to the 9800GTX. Anyone know if 2 GTX's will fit in that case? Is there a better place to spend the money?

You will have to remove the upper HDD bay in order to fit GTX's into the P182. There is still room for four HDD's in the lower area though.

I didn't realize the difference between the platinum and the diamond. I originally had the diamond picked but it has pretty mixed reviews.

My bad, it is the Diamond people are recommending. All nForce boards will have mixed reviews. nForce boards aren't as stable/reliable as their intel counterparts, but its your only solution if you want SLI. If you'd rather avoid the possibility of problems with your motherboard, switch to a GX2 and a P35 board. I don't think the price premium on the 9800GTX is worth it over the 8800GTS 512MB.

hey quadman are you forgetting that will be blowing $50-100 in shipping charges by ordering from 3 different suppliers? I would suggest that you spec the complete system out from all 3 and order from the cheapest one.

I have the MSI P7N Diamond board, and haven't had any problems since I first built it and flashed the BIOS with a newer one. It's served me well so far.

I didn't notice that there was a secong page to my thread, so I started a new one...duh.

hossdaddy hey quadman are you forgetting that will be blowing $50-100 in shipping charges by ordering from 3 different suppliers? I would suggest that you spec the complete system out from all 3 and order from the cheapest one.

Yeah but none of the places have all the items I want. Plus, there is a Canada Computers right down the street as well as a Tiger direct which now that I'm getting the Diamond I can get it there, the Infonec site if $14.99 flat rate shipping, I'll just have to find a different power supply at one of those three places.

Thanks to all for your help. I'm going to start picking this all up in the morning. CHEERS!:)
