Looking for CPU Cooler advice

I'm now using an E8400 with an EP45-UD3LT motherboard.
I have an old heat sink that's not working too well anymore.
Since I've got to take some of the pc apart I was thinking of just installing a new one.
But sometime in the next few months I'm also planning on changing over to a Sandybridge CPU with a new motherboard.
These would go into a small mid-tower case.
Are there any HSF that would do a good job on both platforms?
Thanks.
H

You have LGA 775 and need 1156/1155 cooler. (sandy bridge is 1155, but its the same fixtures as the older 1156) there are loads of heatsinks for this size.

Unless you are waiting for the high end parts coming later this year (which will use 2011 or 1356 or something) then you can pretty much take your pick, as long as it fits in the clearance you have. Do you know the case name or roughly how much clearance is around the CPU socket?

The HSF height is really a problem when installing in small case.
I think the CM Hyper 212 Plus would definitely fit.
I'm using a really small case,measuring (W) 7.36 x (H) 16.57 x (D) 19.09 inches and the Thermalright Venomous X can fit into it,so basically every HSF with the height under 160mm should fit (TRUE rev.C etc.)

You might look at a corsair h50, will work with your current 775 and will also work with the newer 1155/1156. I don't know how you feel about a self contained water cooling system, but the h50 offers good performance and it shouldn't give you height problems.

just add this to your heat sink and it be like bran new !

imho this is all so the future or air cooling for computers and i hope you like flight simulators pc games cus your pc will sound like one with this thing.

1 Delta is good,2 is overkill.
I have one Delta fan with 220CFM and the thing was so loud that i have to use an external AC-DC adaptor to reduce the voltage and speed. Now it runs silently at 3.3V.:D

my self i have one 92" 0.65 amp and two 40" 1\2 amp fans {not in my computer atm}
man unless your doing a suicide overclock or something theirs no way you can have that in your computer for 24\7 use.
you'll go insane from no noise.

and if you like the last video link your going to love this

CM Hyper 212+, Cogage TRUE Spirit s775 version (with different mounting brackets, about $10 for the extra 1155 one), etc.

I love my TRUE Spirit, but this guy is worried about size constraints and the TRUE Spirit is a tall heatsink. I have an antec 900 case and I can't use my side panel fan because the heatpipes are in the way. The OP said he has a small mid tower case....

I have a fairly small TT M9 mid-tower and it fits fine, I can still use the side fan that sits by the video cards...
