Lite-On PSU

I have a PSU that was pulled from an Emachines desktop, it's a Lite-On brand. I'm curious as to the quality and reliability of this unit. I've read that Emachines had huge problems with the Bestec PSUs, but haven't heard anything about Lite-On. All I know about it is that it is only 250W and the model number is PS-5251-7. Any input?

If a manufacturer like Emachines uses it, it's crap. You think they're going to spend the money on a Seasonic-built PSU?

Lite-on in general makes excellent power supplies. Sure they have lower end units but their lower end aren't generally bad just not as good as their real high end products.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear with the fact that my last post was actually a question... Would this PSU be safe to use in a basic low end set-up used mainly for web browsing and such?

How low-end?

Man, you are everywhere! I'm talking AMD athalon 64, less than 2.5 ghz, 2-3 gb ram, and running dual monitors through a basic video card.

Here's everything...

+12V->15A max
-12V->0.5A max
+5V->16A max
+5V(SB)->2A max
+3.3V->20A max

What basic video card are you planning to use? Depending on what exact CPU you're planning on using and video card, you should be fine.

Lite-On is one of the world's biggest PSU manufacturers, bigger than Fortron-Source and Seasonic. Some Lite-Ons have been marketed by SuperMicro, the high-end mobo maker. There are some photos of a server Lite-On PSU in the PSU forum at www.BadCaps.net

Just keep in mind that we are talking about general fitness as a relatively new PSU. Depending on it's prior service period, dust/airflow/design/ambient cooling conditions it may be in great shape or it may be 2/3rds worn out. It should be better than the Bestecs, should have reasonable safety shutdown circuitry, but to recommission for another tour of duty it's anyone's guess how long it will last and what value continuous uptime has to you.

Basically I'm just saying they all have a finite lifespan and mATX generally shorter than average, especially when an OEM decides the PSU exhaust is going to be whole system cooling. It would be good to scrutinize two of the most common faults, the type of fan and capacitors in it, and this even before wondering why the eMachines system was decommissioned, if something had failed on it then PSU is certainly one candidate.
