does this one have a case.... or are you....
nevermind...
Did you run this command first? You should get a wall of text after you run that, and then the install command will work.Code:sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chogydan/ppa && sudo apt-get update
The one hour shutdown may be a file system issue. I found a post over on FF talking about 10 minute shutdown with standard SMP when the partition is formatted with EXT4 - which is the default for most distros these days. I've just reformatted mine with EXT3 to see if it resolves it.
Thanks, musky and I are currently trying to piece together a 16-thread box for me to get Linux running here again at Tobit Labs.No need for apologies, just great to hear you are alive and kicking.![]()
And you have to have the correct names for what you're installing.....
sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-ck linux-headers-generic-ck
are the correct package names, it used to be linux-ck-generic but changed.
H.
... For some reason, Stanford thinks that this box should run regular A3 units for a while, so I don't know how frame times look yet.....
It looks like musky is back on track now that he is running the BFS scheduler.. found my post from almost a year ago where I stated BFS was the way to go... even back when we were on the A2 core for bigadv. Sorry again that I wasn't around at the beginning of this thread. All of my Linux folders over the past two years have ALWAYS run the BFS scheduler so I'd agree with this.
All - Yes, I am running native Linux. It is the only way I will run bigadv until it gets released to the A3 core. I use a very minimal install of Gentoo Linux with a custom compiled 2.6.33 kernel that has the BFS scheduler patched into it. I am now running this on a 30GB Vertex SSD.

Absolutely. I never had core flux issues with A2 or A3 but TPF was always noticeably better using BFS vs. CFS.do you suggest switching over to bfs even if I am not having core flux issues? I will try it on a box to check tpf just in case... it would be cool if it lowered them lol...
Patriot,
I went to try it - the linux_ck site didn't have a package for AMD64 ...
Standard Ubuntu Server 10.10 I had no issues with at all - did a couple of frames at 22:01. If I want to try BFS it's going to be patch the source and build a custom kernel. That is going to be an exercise for next week - but I'm not expecting any improvement over what I'm seeing.
Also going to test if running Fah off of a tmpfs does anything for ppd.
H.
I don't think musky is running 32bit... I am pretty sure its one package to rule them all ... I will give it a shot on my ubuntu box in a min if you like...

I'd just like to thank you guys for encouraging MIBW to try Linux, which allowed me to finally(?!) overtake him for #20 on the team.![]()
Patriot,
You'd expect it to be compatible - but the "sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-ck" gives a 404 with a no path to ....\AMD64\... so I'm assuming it's architecture specific. If you find a work around - please share
H.
Hmmm, total linux noob here, thanks for your patience- I type that into a terminal and get:

what distro you on?
apt-get is the default package manager for Debian...
yum for suse etc...
though you can install apt-get on whatever distro your on....
MIBW,
Fedora uses rpm for it's package management rather than apt. The apt instructions won't work. Either install a Debian based distro (ie Ubuntu server) or google for BFS RPM install. The Ubuntu method is going to be quicker/easier.
H.
I just realized that BFS is the default scheduler on Zenwalk 6.4+ and PCLinuxOS 2010 - might be a distro to try for those having issue patching their kernels.
yup, my Gentoo boxen used to run a kernel compiled against the zen source tree.also the Zen kernels for centOS

Patriot,
Dependency hell drives me even crazier than dll hell ......
IMHO: RPM or APT, the conflicts and dependencies are the reason there are so many linux noobs. Single task machines can be bad enough, making a useable desktop - ugh.
