Let the 6970 Rumors Begin

I like the way they say "With this in mind, we are going to take a bit more time before shipping the AMD Radeon HD 6900 series.", like they enjoy only offering upper-mid-range cards right now. Wonder what the real reason for the delay (if true) is?

there is another story about the delay due to a VRM part by texas instruments or something. They are saying that they don't have enough supply of those parts to make both the 6800 series and 6900 series. Seems like a stupid excuse to me, I mean when was the last time you heard a small part delaying graphic cards. I just think that Nvidia has probably slammed TSMC with orders like they reported before and Ati probably doesn't have suffiecient supply to do a good launch. May be they are just waiting it out.

This sounds all too familiar but it was nvidia last year and that wood screws bullshit. Hopefully we're not waiting for it to come soon in March.

I believe this delay is legit as the article says this comes direct from AMD and you can't make a statement like that and have it be inaccurate as there would be hell to pay.

I do not believe we will see any delays into 2011 for these cards at all. I'm just not sure how much longer I will wait around.

Last night I was thinking about all these newest specs that leaked and it reminded me of the 6800 series. Perhaps they are playing with 2 configurations. like the 1120 shader and 960 shader for the 6850. The difference in performance was 5% in favor of the 1120 shader version. AMD opted to go for the 960 shader version as it was more efficient and I believe more power friendly and less hot etc.. I believe these extra specs may be something like the 1120 shaders and allowing a small 5-10% performance difference. It's possible we will never see this new version as who knows if AMD has yields that are stable enough to support the chips like this in volume. It would be nice though and I'm crossing my fingers for it.

If amd has yields that can support this in volume and the TDP and everything else still falls below GTX 580 they may do it at the cost of increased TDP and temp/noise and who will fault them. I sure wont. It would be a good thing. This delay is pushing it for me. There were 13 days between the launches, then 20 days, now 33 days.

Another Chinese poster wrote that the 6970 is a tad under the 6870 in CF

That's pretty impressive if the 6970 can get near what the next performance bracket's card can do in CF

Wheels burst
Tomsmith 也说过6970 相当(略低)于6870 CF 的性能。
Tomsmith also said that 6970 comparable (slightly lower) in the 6870 CF performance.
也许综合性能6870 CF >= 6970 > 5970 >= 580
Perhaps the overall performance 6870 CF> = 6970> 5970> = 580

According to Powercolor, the 6900 series are 30-50% faster then the 6800 series. Being lazy, here's link and calculations putting it into context (or one way of looking at it):

So that would mean, assuming 30% is 6950 and 50% is 6970, using TPU numbers and 6870 as "6800 representative", if GTX580 stands at "100%" mark HD6950 would be at 94.9% mark and 6970 at 109.5% mark

That's good to hear if it holds true. That would mean that the GTX 580 and 6970 will trade blows from game to game.. HOWEVER if it is much cheaper it will lower GTX 580 price and/or still be the card to get. Based on that rumor too, It would tell me that theoretically the 6950 would be faster than the GTX 570 which should perform around GTX 480 areas or slightly less. Good news. Lets keep our fingers crossed and wait a bit to see what else surfaces. I'm so EXCITE!! :D

At least its something more official. Hopefully this means another price war. :p

HELL YEAH!!! GTX 580 = $550... Meeeeeehhhh I can't wait but I have a feeling I will get 2 6970s depending on the overclocking results vs GTX 580 overclocked. Oh for the love of god no more delays AMD Please.

Sounds like they are talking about series vs series, not a slower high end and faster high end vs a faster mid range.

So 6970 is 30%-50% faster than the 6870 and the 6850 is 30%- 50% faster than the 6850. This would put the 6970 under the 580 gtx.

Ugh now I dunno see this stuff is in Turkish so things get lost in translation. I believe what Tamlin says may be true

If GTX 580 represents 100% and HD6950 is 94.9% and 6970 is 109.9 then to me that says\

HD 6950 is 5% or more slower than GTX 580 whereas 6970 is 10% or less faster than GTX 580. Where is somebody fluent in that language when you need them?

They are talking about series vs. series in the video (video is in English), which is why I included that in my post (the calculations are obviously not mine and I'm too lazy today to make my own).

That could mean:
6970 + 6950 is in average 30% to 50% faster then the 6870 + 6850, being a series, that could translate to average performance.

Or

6970 is 30-50% faster then the 6870,

or

6970 is 30-50% faster then the 6870
6950 is 30-50% faster then the 6850

etc.

This is why I wrote that his calculations was one way of looking at it. :)

It sounds reasonable, the 50% increase is probably when memory limits and bandwidth starts bottlenecking the 68xx series.

Might be. According to the slides, the geometry processing is 2X previous gen though:

Would have been nice to know how they tested it and what they tested. :)

it has 2 tesselators instead of 1 :)

Any link to that rumor? The only rumor I've heard about the tessellator (besides the slide about off-chip buffering and scalability) is that there is a tessellator per simd. Can't remember where I heard it, but it sounded like overkill, so I dismissed it in my head. Here's the other slide though, showing that its different then the 6800 series one:

so pretty much what that says now is the tessellator is decoupled, and will scale based on the number of alu groups but its decoupled so you can have 10 tessellators or 6 tessellators etc. Fermi's bound to its ALU groups.

Gen 7 which is barts does have improved thread management but in practical tests it really doesn't give much more performance increase with a decent amount of tesselation.

Gen8 should have much better tessellation performance then previous AMD cards. And by adding an additional tessellator that will do the trick and hence 2x the geometry performance.

"Kitguru frequently receives inside information on upcoming products and often we publish the news just as we get it - sure we aren’t always popular with some company executives for doing it, but we can live with that.
Last night we were given a very detailed listing from a reputable source relating directly to performance levels for upcoming AMD graphics card products, not yet in the public domain. These performance figures were incredible and our news team decided to post a quick news article until I had time to analyse the figures myself later.
I spoke directly with some very close sources to AMD to get confirmation on the performance figures we received. As there is already much confusion relating to the HD6970 part we felt it was important to update everyone as to what we have heard a short while ago. Although I can vouch for this source as 100% accurate, I cannot reveal their identity.
Just to clarify for our readers: The HD6970 is not aimed at the GTX580 price point and therefore will not perform to the same levels. We are fairly certain that it will be a stunning value for money solution however.
The figures we received which formed the basis of the earlier newspost were for another card in the upcoming AMD range and as such needed clarification. We cannot detail further information at this time as we are under NDA with AMD and will not break these terms. You can rest assured however that the upcoming cards from AMD are going to be absolutely stunning. Nuff’ said."

Another rumor saying the 6970 is going to be a beast, and refuting the earlier rumor about it being slower......Kit Guru must have mistaken the 6950 for the 6970 in their previous report. That has to be it.

I wish someone would just leak some reputable benches

Wonder if they were talking about the 6950.... Things that make you go hmmm.

Right now I'm thinking 6950 @ $299 and 6970 @ $399
If their performance turns out to trump the GTX 580, those numbers will be higher though.

The thread from chiphell is dated 14.11., i couldnt find the kitguru article in here either.
Must have overlooked it then, my bad.

No big deal, I just didn't realize that was the same thing I had read earlier.

First samples of Radeon HD 6900 getting close
AMD is struggling to improve availability, but now it seems things are improving as soures to NordicHardware reveal that the first samples are expected in two weeks. After delays that was partly because a new power supply, but also other reasons.

There have been rumors of AMD's delay of Radeon HD 6900 series would be poor availability of power regulators from Texas Instruments. This was confirmed by our sources, but it wasn't the only reason for the delay. The power supply of the Radeon HD 6900 series is much like the one used by the Radeon HD 6800 cards with Barts GPU, which has also affected the availability of the series.

The information from AMD is otherwise relatively scarce, but it seems pretty clear that the delay is not because AMD has tried to revise specifications in order to meet with GeForce GTX 580. According to PowerColor Radeon HD 6970 will offer 30-50% better performance than current generation graphics cards. One wonders if this will be enough to match GeForce GTX 580 and then AMD also has Radeon HD 6990 sporting dual GPUs around the corner.

In the near future we will have more information on AMD's new graphics card, whether we have the possibility to share before week 50 when Radeon HD 6900 is said to launch remains to be seen.

Thanks for sharing. This means that it wasn't yield issues and if the power regulators allow it, they'll OC like monster too. (esp 6990)
