Lol @ fudzilla and his 1536 SPUs

Curious about 2 polygons per cycle change also.

No wonder Nvidia is trying to accuse AMD of cheating right before the 69xx release.....J/K! LOL

Hmm fascinating stuff. Can't wait for the writeup so we really get all this straight. You guys rock: reading this thread has been really cool and informative.

Damn! I knew the 6990 would be 4gb. It didn't have a choice, particularly if the 6970 is 2gb.

LOAD ONLY 300WATTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if the "built-in-overclock" is gonna increase total to 450W this time L:DL

Well here is what NV has to beat.

If that slide is real, that's 1920 SP per GPU and making it the rumored SP count of the 6970. And, 4 GB of RAM with 307.2 GB/sec mem. bandwidth.
The best part: 300W load and 30W idle... WOW.

It's a beast, a friggin' beast.

I'm curious how they are going to get 300W TDP out of that card, considering that even the 6870 has a 151W TDP.

Didn't another slide say that the 6900 series are Generation 8 compared to Generation 7 for the 6800 series?

Who knows? Maybe they figured something out between the two generations to improve TDP or that slide is coughing up BS. Or, the two 6970 GPUs is downclocked a lot for the 6990.

Perhaps through clock manipulation such as the 5970. Underclocked chips with a massive potential for OCing in the enthusiast market.

Remember that the 6990 is made from 2x6950s clocked chips just like Hemlock (5970) is made from 2x 5850 clocked chips to remain within the 300W power envelope. So the 6970 should be quite a deal more beefier and faster than half of a 6990.

You can't multiply tdp 2x to get board power. Two 6870 on a single board will be far less than 300w since you don't need to extra power for a second PCB etc.

Anyone else have this card?

I've been having some really weird issues and artifacting. Thinking about sending it back and going back to nVidia

this is rumor thread, not something to solve your personal issue that is totally unrelated..

The Nvidia hired shills from Arbuthnot are out in force lol.

Well, hopefully the 69xx leaves an impact when it hits the streets so we can see some real competition.

the 6990 looks beastly, 4GB frame buffer wow. This is OT but what if any benefit would a 4GB UNIFIED frame buffer have? I'm not saying that this card has that just curious that if it did what would the benefit be, if any?

This is false, I don't know where this rumor got started and why people keep spreading it. The 5970 has two full fledged cypress chips on it with 1600 SPs each. A 5850 only has 1440 SPs.
So the 5970, Hemlock, is the equivalent of two 5870 chips although underclocked to achieve the 300W TDP.

As for the 6990, it really depends on what the specs of the actual 6970 are. It looks to me like the 6970 is going to have 1920 SP and 2GB DDR5.

Going by SPs alone, and assuming perfect scaling, that would mean that a 6970 would be approximately 2.2x as powerful as a 5850.
Since this isn't a perfect world, let's say it's more like 1.6x as powerful. That's still gonna be a scorching fast video card.

lol wat

this is about as obvious a trollbot as any ever here

Why?? I think Nvidia is da bomb and I only use Nvidia cards not they horrible AMD cards with there (bad drivers, flickering mouse, cheating on benchmarks, or insert whatever other BS you want).

I think I return my brand new 6870 that I got for $50 bucks and go back to only Nvidia card that make my private parts feel warm and tingle.

Yeah... I suggest selling the 6870 for $50 too ... and getting some grammar lesson with that money. Seriously, you're just a bad case of "Nvidia fanboy-ism"

Woah!

If I'm reading the slides correctly, the 6900 series is like a completely new GPU from the ground up:

  • Better power management by dynamically adjusting power draw per clock cycle.
  • Better tessellation compute performance (2-3x better than 5870).
  • Better and more efficient VLIW4 design compared to VLIW5.
  • Better performance out of a smaller area (goes back to using VLIW4).
  • Improved GPU compute enhancements.
  • New AA mode to improve aliasing and image quality-- Enhanced Quality AA (EQAA).
  • Upgraded ROP design in the render backend.
Makes me wonder if I should just hold out for the 6970 instead of going for the 6870 now.... :D It looks like it's better than the GF110 GPU (GTX 580) since this isn't simply chopping off the GPGPU component and making it smaller and efficient, this is basically AMD saying, "We have the 5000-series GPU and the 6800-series GPU, now let's make it better without sacrificing a lot."
